My Husband Suffocated Our Healthy Newborn for Her

The ultrasound room at St. Jude's Medical Center was dimly lit, the soft blue glow of the monitor casting shadows across Dr. Hoffman's face. I shifted uncomfortably on the examination table, the cold gel on my swollen belly making me shiver despite the room's warmth. "Just a routine check at thirty-seven weeks," I whispered to myself, trying to calm my nerves. "Everything's been perfect so far." Dr. Hoffman's expression remained neutral as he moved the wand across my abdomen. Too neutral. The silence stretched uncomfortably between us. "Is everything okay?" I finally asked, my voice smaller than I intended.

Chapter 5

The hospital corridor was eerily quiet as I lay still, eyes closed, pretending to be sedated. My heart hammered against my ribs, but my breathing remained steady. I'd anticipated this moment—had prepared for it with Samira's help.

"Is it clear?" Preston's voice whispered from the doorway.

"All clear," came the nurse's reply—a temporary staff member Samira had arranged. "She's out cold. Won't remember a thing."

I heard the soft click of the door closing, followed by the unmistakable sound of a passionate kiss. Through my lashes, I could see Preston and Tiffany silhouetted against the dim light, their bodies pressed together in a desperate embrace.

"You're crazy bringing me here," Tiffany giggled, her voice low but clear in the sterile silence.

"I wanted to celebrate properly," Preston replied, his hands sliding down her back. "Our future is secure now."

I fought the urge to scream as they sank onto the sofa across from my bed, their movements intimate and shameless. Just hours ago, I'd been fighting for my life while they celebrated in my hospital room.

"Poor Brittany," Tiffany mocked, her voice dripping with false sympathy. "Always so trusting."

The springs creaked as they shifted positions. I carefully adjusted my grip on my phone beneath the blanket, making sure it was recording every damning word.

"She actually thought that baby was going to save your marriage," Tiffany laughed.

"It would have ruined everything," Preston growled. "The Greene fortune doesn't belong to defective children."

Their conversation grew more intimate as they continued their mockery of my pain. Each word was another nail in their coffin—a coffin I would personally build.

"We should get going," Preston finally said, straightening his collar. "I need to be seen leaving alone."

They moved toward the door, Tiffany smoothing her skirt. I remained motionless until I heard the door click open.

"Now," I whispered into my phone.

The hallway erupted in chaos.

Flashbulbs exploded like lightning, illuminating the corridor in brief, blinding bursts. Shouts erupted as paparazzi surged forward, cameras raised.

"Mr. Greene! Is that your mistress?"

"Tiffany! How long have you been seeing Preston?"

"Did you know about his wife's condition?"

Preston's face contorted with shock and fury as he tried to shield Tiffany behind him. "No comment! Get back!"

But it was too late. The photos were already being transmitted to every gossip site in the city. Within minutes, images of Preston Greene leaving his wife's hospital room with another woman would be everywhere.

---

The next morning, Preston stormed into my room, his face a mask of barely controlled rage. "What the hell was that?"

I blinked at him innocently, my expression carefully calibrated to appear broken yet submissive. "What was what?"

"The photographers! They were waiting outside your room!"

"Oh," I whispered, my voice deliberately fragile. "I'm sorry about that."

He paced at the foot of my bed, running his hands through his perfectly styled hair. "The board is furious. Stock prices dropped twelve percent overnight."

I nodded slowly, as if processing his words with difficulty. "I understand."

"Do you?" He stopped pacing, studying me with narrowed eyes. "Because right now, everything I've built is at risk."

I took a deep breath, summoning tears that came all too easily. "I understand you have... needs. I've always known I wasn't enough for you."

Preston's expression shifted from anger to confusion. "Brittany—"

"I forgive you," I interrupted, reaching for his hand. "But we need to do something about the public perception. About us."

His eyes lit with calculating interest. "What do you suggest?"

"A unity interview," I said softly. "On The Morning Rise. We show everyone that despite our troubles, we're united. It would stabilize the stock prices."

Preston's face cleared, relief washing over his features. "You'd do that? After everything?"

"I love you," I lied, squeezing his hand. "I want to save what we have."

---

The studios of The Morning Rise gleamed with polished chrome and glass. I sat in the green room, reviewing my notes while Samira spoke urgently on her phone in the corner.

"It's all set," she whispered, sliding into the chair beside me. "Detective Chen confirmed they'll move in during the final segment."

I nodded, my heart racing but my expression calm. "The evidence?"

"Everything's in order—the pathology report, the bank transfers, the voice recordings." Samira squeezed my hand. "This will destroy them."

The producer knocked on the door. "Three minutes, Mrs. Ellis."

I took a deep breath, smoothing the skirt of my conservative navy dress. "Is Preston in position?"

"Ready and raring to go," Samira confirmed with a grim smile. "Arrogant as ever."

The stage manager appeared, clipboard in hand. "We're on in two minutes. Mrs. Ellis, you understand the format? Soft questions about your recovery, then the announcement about your charity initiative."

I nodded, rising from my chair. "I understand perfectly."

As I walked toward the bright lights of the studio, I thought of my son—of his perfect little body, of the life he would have had if not for Preston's cruelty. Today, I would avenge him.

The cameras would capture every moment of Preston's fall. And I would be the one to push him.

The small cupcake sat on my nightstand like a monument to my own foolishness. Thirty candles would have been too much for the tiny space of my room—the servant's quarters tucked away in the mansion's forgotten corner—so I'd settled for a single white candle, unlit and mocking in the dim evening light. I'd bought it myself during my weekly grocery run, slipping it into the cart alongside Aidan's favorite cereal and Bryson's imported coffee. The cashier had smiled when she saw it. "Someone's birthday?" she'd asked. "Mine," I'd whispered, and the word had felt foreign on my tongue. My fingers traced the pendant at my throat, the small silver locket containing my mother's photo—the only witness to this pathetic celebration. Six years. Six birthdays in this house, and not once had anyone remembered. Not Bryson, who barely acknowledged my existence except to issue curt instructions.
