Chapter 3

Sasha dropped the folder on my desk at 9:47 on a Thursday morning.

No greeting. No preamble. She just set it down, flat and heavy, and stepped back.

I looked at her face first. I've learned to read Sasha before I read anything else. She was still. The kind of still that meant she'd already worked through whatever she needed to work through, and now she was waiting for me.

I opened the folder.

The first page was a summary sheet. Clean columns, printed in the twelve-point font she always used for documents she wanted me to actually absorb. At the top, one line: *Wisteria Group LLC. Delaware registration. Registered agent: Greta Kelley.*

I read it twice.

Greta Kelley. Capri Lynch's older sister.

I kept reading.

Three hundred and fifty thousand dollars. Authorized by Emmett Sullivan. Classified in the company's expense records as *strategic consulting fees.* Paid out over twenty-two months through a series of transfers timed to avoid triggering automatic review thresholds. Small enough to stay quiet. Large enough to change someone's life.

I turned to the breakdown page.

One hundred and eighty thousand toward a waterfront condo purchase. Forty-five thousand for a vehicle registration in Capri Lynch's name. Sixty-two thousand in direct wire transfers to accounts linked to the Kelley family. The remainder distributed across charges I recognized—a furniture company, a home design studio, a luxury grocery delivery service, a spa with a monthly membership tier.

He had furnished her life. He had bought it piece by piece with money that belonged to both of us and called it a consulting fee.

I set the page down.

'He thought he was smarter than the books,' Sasha said. 'He wasn't smarter than me.'

I looked up at her.

'No,' I said. 'He wasn't.'

She held my gaze for a moment. Then she nodded once and walked out.

I sat with the folder for a long time after that. The coffee on my desk went cold. I didn't touch it.

---

The property management office was on the ground floor of a glass building two blocks from the water. I went on a Friday afternoon. I wore a blazer. I brought my business card and the name of a board member who sat on the building's parent company.

It took eleven minutes.

That night, I locked my home office door, sat down at my desk, and opened the footage file on my laptop.

I made myself a cup of black coffee first. I do that when I've already decided something. It's not superstition. It's just a signal to myself that the thinking is done and the work is starting.

The footage was timestamped and clear.

I watched him walk through the lobby. I watched the elevator doors open. I watched Capri step forward to meet him, one hand reaching for his arm the way you reach for something that belongs to you. Her pregnancy was visible in the later clips. Her belly round and obvious under the soft fabric of whatever she was wearing.

I watched him leave the next morning. Hair different. Same jacket. Coffee cup from somewhere I didn't recognize.

Three times a week, on average. Sometimes more.

I watched every clip. I wrote down every timestamp. I cross-referenced six of them against dates Emmett had told me he was working late or traveling.

All six matched a lie.

I closed the laptop when I was done and sat in the dark for a minute. The house was quiet. Trip was asleep down the hall.

I drank the rest of my coffee. It had gone cold, too.

---

The safe is behind the framed photo on the second shelf. My father and me at my college graduation. He's got one arm around my shoulders and he's looking at me the way he does when he thinks I'm not watching—like he's proud of something he didn't entirely expect.

I know the combination without thinking about it.

The Fidelity Agreement was exactly where I'd left it ten years ago. Cream-colored paper, notarized seal, two signatures at the bottom. Mine. His.

I didn't need to read it. I had it memorized. But I read it anyway.

The language was unambiguous. In the event of infidelity, the offending party forfeits all claims to shared marital assets. Property. Accounts. Equity. Intellectual property developed during the marriage.

All of it.

Emmett had signed this in front of my father. He'd held the pen like it meant nothing because he was certain he would never need to worry about it. He'd looked my father in the eye and signed his name to a document he believed was just a formality.

I placed it on top of the financial records. I set the surveillance timestamps beside it.

I looked at what I had assembled.

The folder from Sasha. The printed screenshots from Capri's Instagram. The timestamped surveillance logs. The wire transfer records with Greta Kelley's name at the top. And beneath all of it, the Fidelity Agreement—cream paper, clean language, his signature at the bottom in the same handwriting I'd watched sign birthday cards and school forms and the lease on our first apartment together.

I closed the dossier.

I picked up my phone and called the attorney's office.

'I need to schedule a meeting,' I said. 'Just one party will be notified in advance.'

I set the dossier in the center of my desk.

It was ready.
