Chapter 5

I made the account on a Tuesday. A random username. A random profile picture. A blank grid.

I sat in the car outside a coffee shop in Silver Lake and typed the first post into the drafts folder. I didn't publish it. I just needed to see the words outside my head.

*Five years ago I stopped speaking. I thought I was protecting someone I loved. I was wrong.*

I deleted it. Wrote it again. Deleted it again.

Then I started uploading screenshots. The surveillance app Finnegan installed on my phone three years ago. The one he said was for emergencies. For my safety. I had found it six months ago when my phone started dying too fast. I didn't confront him. I just started backing everything up to a separate cloud account he didn't know about.

Every text I sent. Every location I visited. Every call I made.

All of it logged. All of it watched.

I uploaded the screenshots to the drafts folder and wrote captions I didn't publish.

*This is what control looks like.*

*This is what love isn't.*

I added more. The pattern of Jonah's payments. The correlation between my questions and my brother's bills. I made a graphic. Clean. Simple. Dates on one side. Delays on the other. The pattern was a noose.

I wrote the caption: *He used my brother's spine as a leash.*

I didn't publish that either.

I just needed to build it. Brick by brick. Word by word. Until I knew exactly what I had.

Then I opened a new note and typed a single sentence.

*He kept the footage. Did you know?*

I saved it. Closed the app. Started the car.

When I got home, Finnegan was in the living room. He looked up when I walked in. His face was soft. Concerned.

"Hey," he said. "Can we talk?"

I nodded and sat down on the couch. He sat next to me. Close but not touching.

"You've seemed disconnected lately," he said. His voice was quiet. Careful. "I'm worried about you."

I pulled out my phone and typed. *I'm fine.*

"Are you?" He leaned forward. His elbows on his knees. His hands clasped. "Because you seem different. Distant. Like you're somewhere else."

I looked at him. He looked back. His eyes were searching my face.

"I think it would be good for us to see Dr. Harlan together," he said. "Just to talk. Just to make sure we're okay."

*We're okay,* I typed.

"I know," he said. "But I want to make sure. I want to protect you."

He signed it. Slow. Deliberate. *I only want to protect you.*

I signed back. *I know.*

He smiled. Relieved. He reached over and took my hand.

I let him.

Under the table, my other hand was a fist. Nails digging into my palm.

"Thank you," he said. "For trusting me."

I nodded.

He kissed my forehead and stood up. "I have a session tonight. I'll be back late."

I watched him leave. Watched him pick up his keys. Watched him walk out the door.

Then I went upstairs and opened the burner tablet. I pulled up the note I had written.

*He kept the footage. Did you know?*

I found Melina's address. Public record. Easy.

I printed the note on plain paper. No signature. No return address.

I drove to a post office in Glendale and mailed it.

Then I went home and made dinner.

Melina got the note on Thursday. I know because Finnegan's mood changed on Friday.

He was quieter. Sharper. He checked his phone more. He took calls in the other room.

On Saturday he told me he had to go to the studio. The old one. In Burbank. He said he needed to pick up some equipment.

I nodded.

He left at noon.

I waited an hour. Then I drove to the studio.

I parked down the street and walked. The building looked the same. Brick. Peeling paint. The dumpster still overflowing.

I unlocked the door and stepped inside.

The air was different. Disturbed.

Someone had been here.

I walked through the control room. The tarps were still in place. The cables still coiled on the floor.

But the back office door was open.

I had closed it last time. I was sure.

I walked in slowly. The desk was empty. The window still looked out at the dumpster.

I opened the cabinet.

The file box was there. The folder was there.

I pulled out the SD card and checked it. Still intact.

But the dust on the cabinet shelf had been wiped clean.

I stood very still.

Someone had been here. Someone had opened this cabinet. Someone had looked.

I put the SD card in my pocket. I put the folder under my arm.

I turned to leave.

That's when I smelled it.

Gasoline.

Faint. Recent.

I walked back through the control room. The smell was stronger near the door.

I looked down.

There was a wet line on the floor. Leading from the door to the hallway. To the back exit.

I followed it.

The back door was propped open with a brick. The deadbolt had been flipped.

From the inside.

I stepped outside. The alley was empty. A car engine started somewhere close. I couldn't see it.

I went back inside and locked the door behind me. I walked to the front.

That's when I heard the click.

Metal on metal.

I turned.

The front door was closing. Slowly. Deliberately.

I ran.

The door slammed shut.

I grabbed the handle. Locked.

I pulled. Nothing.

I looked through the window.

Melina stood on the sidewalk. She was holding a red gas can. She set it down. She pulled out a lighter.

Our eyes met through the glass.

She didn't smile. She didn't frown.

She just flicked the lighter.

And dropped it.
