Chapter 5

Simone Ward's piece ran on a Tuesday, above the fold in the Style section, with a photograph of Fallon pressing her face into Marmalade's fur like the cat was the only thing left in the world that hadn't betrayed her. The headline called me the Ice Queen. The subhead did the rest of the work: *Billionaire Wife Shutters Beloved Rescue, Starves Dying Husband of Affection.*

I read it standing up, the way I read all bad news, coffee cooling on the counter behind me. Fallon's quotes were soft and wet at the edges. *I only ever wanted to help him breathe easier. She couldn't stand that someone loved him for free.* There was no mention of Velvet Paws' bank statements. There was no mention of a Miami condo.

My assistant forwarded two calls before nine a.m. — board members, both men who'd sat across from me in a hundred meetings and never once asked how I took my coffee, suddenly very concerned about optics. I told her to thank them for their concern and confirm the quarterly numbers were unaffected.

Then I released the first tranche of Intervention Center research grants — four point two million, allergy immunotherapy trials at three teaching hospitals — and said nothing to the press about the column at all.

I don't correct narratives. I outlive them.

---

Fallon couldn't touch Velvet Paws anymore. Her donor page still read *fundraising temporarily suspended*, and I imagined that particular sentence sitting in her stomach like a stone. So she found the only asset left that still had my name on it and didn't yet have hers.

I know this because Priya flagged two after-hours accesses to the estate's document safe while I was in Boston closing the Halloran acquisition — a keypad log, timestamped, the kind of thing that means nothing to a man who's never had to think about what a log is for.

I didn't need to hear the conversation to know how it went. I know Fallon's register by now — the diminutives, the wounded logic. *If she loved you, Hudson, she'd let you in. That trust is the only proof left. A woman who really trusted you wouldn't lock you out of her own house.* Hudson has never once, in three years, asked to see the trust documents on his own. He asked four days after Fallon started calling him from a new burner number outside a padlocked gate in Bushwick.

I flew back Thursday night. I photographed the access log myself, on my phone, standing in the hallway outside my own study at eleven p.m. while the house slept around me in its clean, filtered silence. I sent it to Priya with one line — *Move the private trust authorization to the separate encrypted protocol effective immediately. Confirm when done.*

She confirmed at 11:47 p.m.

I didn't mention it to Hudson. I didn't ask him why the safe had been opened twice in forty-eight hours while I was gone, or what he'd been looking for, or who'd told him to look. I simply updated the file — the one that started with cat hair on a lapel and now ran to eleven documents — and went to bed.

Some men need to be confronted to understand they've been caught. Hudson isn't one of them. Confrontation, for Hudson, is just another kind of attention. I'd rather he not have any at all.

---

The Griffin Hotels creditors' dinner was held in a private room at the University Club, chandeliers doing their best to make insolvency look like tradition. I went because not going would have been a headline of its own. Whitney sat at the head of the table in a color she called ecru and I called defensive, working the room the way she always does — a compliment here, a small correction there, the particular cruelty of a woman convinced she still has leverage.

I didn't hear what she said to the man from the financial column. I heard about it the next morning, in the back of my car, in a business section item with my name in the second paragraph. *A woman who bought a husband,* Whitney was quoted as saying, *and is furious she can't return him.*

I read it once. I closed the tab.

The car was quiet except for the sound of rain starting against the window, thin at first, then steadier — the kind of sound that used to mean nothing and now, I suppose, means something to everyone in this story but me.

I called Marcus.

"The bridge loan recall framework," I said. "Forty million, full documentation."

"Ready to execute," he said. "You said the file wasn't complete."

"It's complete." I watched the city slide past, gray and glittering and entirely indifferent to the Griffin name. "Forty-eight hours. Full execution."

There was a pause on the line — not hesitation, just Marcus doing arithmetic in his head, the way he does before he agrees to something enormous.

"Understood," he said.

I hung up before the rain got heavier. Whitney had spent eleven years believing that money and family were the same currency, that the Griffin name was collateral enough for any bridge, any loan, any woman fool enough to marry into it. She was about to learn the exchange rate.

Claimed By The Uncle: My Sweet Revenge Novel Cover

I was the "crazy girl" my family sent to a survivalist commune in Utah to rot. Four years later, I returned to Manhattan with a titanium USB drive and a heart full of ice, ready to blackmail the one man who could burn my family to the ground. But I underestimated how much they hated me. My fiancé, Preston, was already laundering money through my inheritance and sleeping with my replacement. He didn't even flinch when I showed him the evidence of his crimes. Instead, he grabbed me by the shoulders, smashed my phone, and shoved me out of his moving Lincoln into a midnight storm. I hit the wet pavement hard, my knees scraping against the asphalt as I watched him drive away, laughing about how I was a "dirt-poor exile" that nobody wanted. Within minutes, my credit cards were flagged as stolen and my father’s lawyers were drafting a statement calling me mentally unstable. I was left shivering in a puddle of oily sludge, wearing a ruined Chanel suit, with no money, no home, and no one to hear me scream. I couldn't understand how they could be so cruel. I was their flesh and blood, yet they treated me like a broken toy to be discarded in the trash. I was a "distressed asset" in a city that only valued gold. That’s when a black armored SUV pulled to the curb. King Wagner—the ruthless shark of Wall Street and Preston’s own uncle—looked at my muddy face with cold, calculating eyes. He didn't offer me pity; he offered me a leash. "You belong to me now," he whispered, pulling me into the dry warmth of his car. By the next morning, he had announced our engagement to the world, turning me into the very weapon that would slit my family's throat.
