Chapter 2

Priya's report came in at 6:42 a.m., before I'd finished my coffee. I read it standing at the kitchen island, the tablet propped against the fruit bowl, because I don't like to sit for bad news. Sitting makes it feel permanent.

Velvet Paws Wellness LLC had one employee. Fallon Lane. Not a receptionist, not a vet tech, not a single part-time volunteer on payroll — just her, drawing a salary from a nonprofit that had filed for tax-exempt status and then never filed anything else. There was a down payment on a condo in Miami, one point one million, wired eleven months ago. There was a lease on a G-Wagon, white, the kind of car that photographs well outside a rescue shelter for a fundraising post. Total transferred from Hudson's discretionary accounts over three years: eight point seven million dollars.

I scrolled once. Twice. Then I set the tablet face-down on the counter, the way I do with anything I need to stop looking at before I've decided how to feel about it.

"Continue documenting," I texted Priya. "Do not intervene. A scheme in motion generates evidence. A scheme interrupted generates excuses."

She sent back a single word. *Understood.*

I believed her. Priya doesn't need things explained twice, which is one of the reasons I keep her.

For the next several days, I watched my husband the way I watch a stock I suspect is overvalued — quietly, without comment, letting the numbers tell me what I already knew.

Hudson left the estate three times that week without his medical escort. I know because the gate log records every departure, timestamped, and I have access to a system he doesn't think about because he's never had to build one. He was gone two hours the first time, three the second, four the third. He came home each time smelling faintly of someone else's apartment — fabric softener that wasn't ours, a candle scent that wasn't ours.

His rescue inhaler was depleting three times faster than the log allowed for. I know this because Dr. Okafor's team tracks his canister weight weekly, a precaution I insisted on after his second hospitalization. Three times faster meant three times the triggers. Meant he was somewhere his lungs didn't like, often enough that his body had started keeping score even if he wouldn't.

And he'd started flinching when the air locks cycled. That soft mechanical hiss that used to mean nothing to him, that used to just be the sound of the house doing its job — now his shoulders would go up half an inch, like he was bracing for something. Like the clean air itself had become an accusation.

I said nothing. I stopped correcting him when he skipped his morning nebulizer, stopped reminding him about the filtration report, stopped asking where he'd been. The absence of it sat in the house like a held breath. I could see it working on him better than any argument would have. Hudson has always needed friction to know I'm paying attention. Silence, to him, is a kind of vertigo.

He broke first, the way I knew he would, on a Thursday morning in the kitchen. I was reading the overnight air-quality summary on my phone when he came in already dressed for a day he had no meetings for.

"You know what this house is?" he said. "It's a laboratory. And I'm the experiment."

I didn't look up right away. "Good morning to you too."

"Don't do that." His voice cracked on the second word, higher than he meant it to be. "Don't be — pleasant. You've never once asked me how I feel, Val. Not once. This house doesn't breathe for me. It breathes *instead* of me."

I set the phone down. Looked at him properly — the shadows under his eyes, the slight tremor in his hand where it gripped the counter edge, the collar of a shirt I hadn't picked out for him.

"You want me to ask how you feel," I said. "All right. How do you feel?"

He opened his mouth. Closed it. I watched him search for the speech he'd rehearsed, the one that started with a grievance and was supposed to end somewhere I'd apologize. It didn't have a middle. It never does, with him — just the opening line and the ending, and nothing built between them to hold the weight.

"That's not — you're twisting it."

"I'm not twisting anything. I asked you a direct question." I picked my folder up off the counter, slid his medication log across to where he stood. "Your evening doses are here. The filtration report's on the counter behind you, if you want to know exactly what the air in this house is doing for your lungs instead of you."

"Val —"

"I have a seven a.m. call." I checked my watch, though I already knew the time. "It's six fifty-eight."

I left him standing there with the log in his hand and the report he wasn't going to read behind him. I was in the car before I heard it — the flat crack of paper hitting the far wall, the log skidding across tile.

I didn't turn around. I'd already seen everything I needed to see.

I was the "crazy girl" my family sent to a survivalist commune in Utah to rot. Four years later, I returned to Manhattan with a titanium USB drive and a heart full of ice, ready to blackmail the one man who could burn my family to the ground. But I underestimated how much they hated me. My fiancé, Preston, was already laundering money through my inheritance and sleeping with my replacement. He didn't even flinch when I showed him the evidence of his crimes. Instead, he grabbed me by the shoulders, smashed my phone, and shoved me out of his moving Lincoln into a midnight storm. I hit the wet pavement hard, my knees scraping against the asphalt as I watched him drive away, laughing about how I was a "dirt-poor exile" that nobody wanted. Within minutes, my credit cards were flagged as stolen and my father’s lawyers were drafting a statement calling me mentally unstable. I was left shivering in a puddle of oily sludge, wearing a ruined Chanel suit, with no money, no home, and no one to hear me scream. I couldn't understand how they could be so cruel. I was their flesh and blood, yet they treated me like a broken toy to be discarded in the trash. I was a "distressed asset" in a city that only valued gold. That’s when a black armored SUV pulled to the curb. King Wagner—the ruthless shark of Wall Street and Preston’s own uncle—looked at my muddy face with cold, calculating eyes. He didn't offer me pity; he offered me a leash. "You belong to me now," he whispered, pulling me into the dry warmth of his car. By the next morning, he had announced our engagement to the world, turning me into the very weapon that would slit my family's throat.
