Chapter 2

Alicia showed up at 9:15 PM.

I watched it happen through the camera I'd installed in the hallway six weeks ago. She didn't knock softly. She pounded. Three hard strikes with the flat of her hand.

Gavin opened the door in a T-shirt and sweatpants. His hair was uncombed. He looked like he hadn't slept.

He hadn't.

The countdown read 22 hours.

"We need to talk," Alicia said. Her voice was tight. High. She pushed past him into the condo before he could respond.

I turned up the volume on my laptop. I was in a short-term rental in Fremont, third floor, cash paid through the end of the month. The walls were beige. The furniture was IKEA. The coffee was terrible. I drank it anyway.

Alicia stood in the middle of the living room. She was wearing jeans and a leather jacket. Her hands were shaking.

"Someone posted about Hartley & Cole on FinanceWhistle," she said. "It's vague but it's there. Photos. Blurred faces. People are speculating."

Gavin closed the door. Locked it. Walked past her to the kitchen and poured himself a scotch. He didn't offer her one.

"I know," he said.

"You know?" Her voice went up. "That's all you have to say? Gavin, if anyone connects those photos to us—"

"They won't."

"How do you know?"

He took a long drink. Set the glass down hard on the counter. "Because I'm handling it."

"Handling it how?"

He looked at her. Really looked at her. Not the way he used to look at her in the Fairmont bar. Not the way he looked at her when he told her she was the only one who understood him. This was different. This was the way you look at a problem you're trying to solve.

"Someone sent me photos," he said. "Of us. They want money."

Alicia went very still. "What?"

"Five hundred thousand dollars. Seventy-two hours. If I don't pay, they upload everything. My face. Your face. Metadata. Time stamps. Everything."

She stared at him. "When were you going to tell me?"

"I'm telling you now."

"Gavin—" She stepped toward him. Her voice cracked. "We need to go to the police. This is extortion. This is—"

"No police."

"Why not?"

"Because the promotion committee meets in three weeks. Because HR is already tagged in the forum post. Because if this becomes a police matter, it becomes a public matter, and I lose everything."

"So what are you going to do?"

He refilled his glass. "I'm going to pay."

"With what money?"

He didn't answer.

Alicia's face changed. Something in her eyes sharpened. "You told me you were barely keeping up with the mortgage. You told me Quinn's family was bleeding you dry. You said—"

"I said what I needed to say."

Silence.

Alicia's hands curled into fists at her sides. "So you lied."

"I managed expectations."

"You lied."

Gavin set the glass down. Turned to face her fully. His voice went flat. Transactional. The warmth was gone. The charm was gone. What was left was arithmetic.

"Alicia. Listen to me. You're in those photos too. Your face. Your name. If this goes public, you're done. No more contracts with Hartley & Cole. No more referrals. No more anything. So you need to scrub your digital footprint. Delete texts. Delete photos. Delete anything that connects us. Do it tonight."

She stared at him. "That's it? That's all you have to say?"

"What do you want me to say?"

"That we're in this together. That you'll protect me. That—"

"I am protecting you. By telling you to clean up your side."

"And what about us?"

He looked at her like she'd asked him to solve a calculus problem. "What about us?"

"You said you were leaving her. You said—"

"I said a lot of things."

Alicia's face went white. Then red. She grabbed her purse off the couch. Walked to the door. Stopped with her hand on the knob.

"Who are you?" she said quietly.

Gavin didn't answer.

She left.

The door clicked shut.

Gavin stood alone in the kitchen. He finished his scotch. Poured another. Sat on the couch with his laptop and stared at the countdown.

19 hours.

He still didn't call the police.

---

The next morning, Gavin went to work.

He showered. Shaved. Put on a charcoal suit and a blue tie. Checked his reflection in the mirror. Adjusted his collar. He looked like a man who had everything under control.

He arrived at Hartley & Cole at 8:30 AM. Smiled at the receptionist. Poured himself coffee in the break room. Sat at his desk and opened his email.

At 10:15 AM, his manager—Richard Kline, Senior VP, fifteen years at the firm—stopped by his office.

"Gavin. Got a minute?"

"Of course."

Richard closed the door. Sat in the chair across from Gavin's desk. He was holding a tablet.

"Promotion committee meets in three weeks," Richard said. "You're still on the shortlist for Regional Director."

"I appreciate that."

"You should. It's a competitive field." Richard tapped the tablet. "But I want to give you a heads-up. The board's been asking questions. Not about your performance. That's solid. About stability."

Gavin kept his face neutral. "Stability."

"Personal life. Family. The board likes to know their directors have their houses in order. It reads well in the boardroom. You understand."

"I do."

"Good." Richard stood. Smiled. "Just keep doing what you're doing. Stay steady. Stay clean. And that corner office is yours."

He left.

Gavin sat very still.

Stay clean.

The countdown read 11 hours.

---

At lunch, Gavin met Marcus Webb at a Thai place on Fifth Avenue. Marcus ordered pad see ew. Gavin ordered nothing. He wasn't hungry.

"You look like hell," Marcus said.

Gavin forced a smile. "Long week."

"Where's Quinn? Haven't seen her at any of the events lately."

"Visiting a friend."

"For how long?"

Gavin's jaw tightened. "A few days."

Marcus chewed thoughtfully. Set down his fork. "Have you filed a police report?"

Gavin blinked. "What?"

"A police report. I mean, it's been what, three days? Four? And she's not answering her phone?"

"She's fine. She's just—"

"Gavin." Marcus leaned forward. His voice dropped. "What if something actually happened to her?"

Gavin stared at him.

Marcus picked up his fork again. "I'm just saying. Better safe than sorry. You don't want people asking questions."

Gavin nodded slowly. "Right. Yeah. You're right."

But he didn't file a report.

Instead, he sat in his car in the parking garage for forty minutes. Engine off. Hands on the steering wheel. Staring at nothing.

A missing wife is not a crisis.

It's a resource.

Quinn's parents would pay anything for their daughter's life.

Anything.

The idea settled into his mind like a key sliding into a lock.

He started the car.

Drove home.

Poured himself a scotch.

And began to plan.
