Chapter 4

I found the first receipt in the kitchen trash. It was crumpled, the kind of paper ball people make when they're trying to throw something away without thinking about it. Patrick Shen's signature sat in the corner like a confession. The amount next to it made my stomach turn: twenty thousand dollars, paid to a man named Marcus Thorne. The date was two weeks after my release from prison.

I smoothed the paper on the marble countertop. The penthouse was quiet. Brandon was at his office, and the housekeeper had Thursdays off. I had time to think.

Marcus Thorne. I knew that name. He'd been my boss at the cleaning service—the one who made me scrub floors on my hands and knees while he walked circles around me, telling me I was lucky to have a job at all. The one who'd fired me for 'attitude' when I'd asked for a bathroom break.

The second receipt was in Patrick's desk drawer. I found it on my third try, behind a stack of charity gala invitations. This one was for thirty thousand, paid to a temp agency. The note in the margin read: 'Ensure S.R. is assigned to Rodriguez event. Full humiliation protocol.'

My fingers went numb. I sat in Patrick's chair and stared at the words. Full humiliation protocol. Like I was a lab rat in an experiment.

I remembered that day. The charity gala where I'd been assigned to serve drinks. Where Jerry Rodriguez—spoiled heir, trust fund baby—had deliberately spilled wine on his shoes and made me clean them with my own scarf. Where he'd laughed while I knelt on the marble floor.

I'd thought it was random cruelty. The kind rich people dole out when they're bored. I was wrong.

The third piece fell into place three days later. I was dusting—yes, I was still playing the role of the grateful wife—when I overheard the housekeeper talking to the gardener in the service corridor. Her voice carried that gossiping tone people use when they think no one is listening.

'Mr. Shen told me to make sure she got the job at the hotel,' she said. 'Said Mr. Hayes wanted her to work her way back up. Like a test, you know?'

I set the feather duster down and walked to the window. The city sprawled below, a grid of lights and shadows. Somewhere down there, people were living normal lives. People who had never been tested to see if they were worth loving.

The cocktail party arrived on a Friday. Brandon called it a 'pre-gala celebration.' He invited everyone who mattered in his world—old money, new money, the kind of people who use last names like currency. I wore a black dress that cost more than my old apartment and smiled until my face hurt.

I was standing by the bar, nursing a champagne I didn't want, when I heard the laugh. It cut through the polite murmur of the crowd like a blade. I turned.

Jerry Rodriguez stood in the center of the room, his arm slung around a redhead I didn't recognize. He was drunk, his tie loosened, his voice carrying the kind of volume that comes from never being told to be quiet.

'You guys remember that girl?' he was saying. 'The one who cleaned my shoes at the Meridian gala? God, she was pathetic. On her knees the whole time, scrubbing like her life depended on it.'

The redhead giggled. Someone else laughed. I watched the room absorb his story like it was dessert.

'What happened to her?' someone asked.

'No idea,' Jerry said. 'Probably still scrubbing floors somewhere. Though I heard she got fired from that hotel job too. Guess some people just can't—'

He stopped. His eyes found me across the room. The words died in his throat.

I was still in my black dress. Still holding my champagne. But something in my face must have changed because he went pale.

'Shit,' he said. 'You're—I didn't—'

'It's fine, Jerry,' I said. My voice carried. The room went quiet. 'I'm just surprised to see you here.'

He swallowed hard. 'Your husband invited me. I didn't know you'd be—'

'At my own home?' I finished for him. 'Of course not.'

The silence stretched. I could feel Brandon watching from across the room, his social radar pinging like crazy. But I wasn't done.

'Tell me,' I said, stepping closer. 'That day at the gala. When you made me clean your shoes. Did you know who I was?'

He shook his head. Then, like a man trying to save himself from drowning, he added: 'But your husband was there. He was watching from his car. Right there, the whole time. I thought—I figured you owed him money or something. He didn't say anything.'

The room held its breath. I looked at Brandon. He was frozen, his hand halfway to his mouth, his eyes wide and pleading.

I smiled. 'Thank you for clarifying that, Jerry.'

I set my champagne down on a side table. Walked past the crowd. Past Brandon. Past the people who had laughed at Jerry's story. I walked to the bathroom, closed the door, and locked it.

The mirror was all marble and gold. I looked at myself—really looked—for the first time in weeks. The woman staring back had good bones, clean skin, and eyes that had seen the worst of what people could do to each other. There was nothing left in those eyes that resembled hesitation. Nothing left that could be broken.

I straightened my dress. Fluffed my hair. Applied a fresh coat of lipstick.

When I walked back into the party, I was ready.
