Chapter 2

The door didn't knock. It just opened.

I was in the armchair by the window, Micah asleep against my chest, when I heard the click of the handle and then heels on marble. I knew those heels. I'd heard them clack across my kitchen floor a hundred times, back when I still thought they belonged to a friend.

Brooklynn stood in the doorway in a dress that still had the tags cut off that morning, I'd bet money on it. Her belly was round under the fabric, six months maybe, seven. She looked around the suite the way people look at a house they're pricing out. The orchid. The skyline. The bassinet.

"Wow," she said. "Somebody's living large."

I didn't answer. I shifted Micah higher on my shoulder and watched her cross the room like she'd been invited.

She went straight for the charcuterie tray on the side table, picked up a piece of prosciutto with her fingers, and folded herself into the chair across from me like she owned the lease.

"Mmm," she said, chewing. "Is this the good stuff? Dustin said this place had a whole gourmet program." She looked at Olive, still sleeping in the bassinet, and her voice went up two octaves. "Oh my God, look at her. She's precious. Just precious." She pressed a hand to her own stomach. "Mine's due in March. A boy, they think."

"Congratulations," I said. Flat. Even.

"Thank you." She smiled, showing teeth. "It's so nice, isn't it? Being taken care of. Some women just have that gift, I guess. Finding a man who'll pay for everything." She glanced around the suite again, slower this time, cataloging. "Must be nice having a generous sponsor. I mean, Dustin's good to me, but nothing like — this."

I reached up and touched the stud in my left ear. Once. Then I let my hand fall back into my lap.

"Is that all you came to say?"

"I came to see the babies." She leaned forward, elbows on her knees, eyes bright with something that wasn't warmth. "And I guess I wanted to see how the other half lives. The half that doesn't have to earn anything. Just marries it or — " she shrugged, delicate, cruel " — finds someone new to bankroll her."

I didn't raise my voice. I didn't move except to press the small brass button mounted beside the headboard.

Brooklynn blinked. "What was that?"

"You'll see."

We sat in silence for the length of two minutes. She filled it by eating another piece of prosciutto and cooing at Olive again, softer this time, like she was performing for an audience that had stopped watching.

The door opened again. This time with a knock first.

Serena Walsh came in wearing the center's charcoal uniform, a tablet in one hand and a leather folder in the other. Her face was perfectly pleasant. The kind of pleasant that costs a lot of money to maintain.

"Ms. Sullivan," she said. "You called?"

"I did." I nodded toward Brooklynn. "My guest here let herself in without an appointment. She's helped herself to the suite's amenities. I'd like her billed accordingly."

Brooklynn's fork — she'd found a fork somewhere — stopped halfway to her mouth. "Billed? I'm her sister. I told the front desk—"

"You told the front desk you were my sister," I said. "I have one sister. Her name is Dana. You are not her."

Serena didn't blink. She opened the folder and slid a single sheet across the table between us. "This suite operates on a private-access tariff, ma'am. Unauthorized entrants are billed for the full daily rate of occupancy, plus consumption of in-suite dining, concierge services, and security override fees for the false credential provided at check-in."

Brooklynn stared at the paper. I watched her eyes move down the column of numbers, watched the color drain out of her face line by line.

"This says—" She stopped. Swallowed. "This says a hundred and four thousand dollars."

"A hundred four thousand, two hundred and twelve," Serena said, gently, like she was reading a weather forecast. "Would you like a copy for your records?"

"I'm not paying this." Brooklynn's voice cracked at the edges. She looked at me. "Gabriela. This is insane. This is — you're doing this on purpose."

"You walked into a private suite that costs two hundred thousand dollars for a stay," I said. "You lied to get past security. You ate food that wasn't offered to you. What did you think would happen?"

"I thought — " She stopped again. Her hand had gone to her stomach, not tender now, just bracing. "I thought you'd be embarrassed. I thought you'd want me gone quietly."

"I don't embarrass easily anymore," I said. "You should've asked around before you came."

Serena held the folder out, patient as a coat check girl. "We accept card or wire transfer, ma'am. Payment is due before you leave the premises."

Brooklynn didn't take it. She sat there with her mouth slightly open, the fork still in her other hand, prosciutto forgotten on the plate, and for the first time since she'd walked through that door, she looked exactly like what she was.

Someone who'd wandered into a room she couldn't afford.
