Chapter 2

Marcus Webb called me back at six in the morning. I was still awake. I'd been awake since I walked out of The Plaza. I sat in the penthouse living room in the dark with my coat still on, watching the windows across Fifth Avenue go from black to gray.

"We found something," Marcus said.

I didn't ask what. I said, "How fast can you get here?"

"Twenty minutes."

I hung up. I took my coat off. I made coffee I didn't drink. I stood at the window and counted taxis until the doorman buzzed Marcus up.

He came in carrying a laptop and a file box. Marcus was one of the foster brothers from the old days. We ran together when we were sixteen. He knew how to disappear and how to find things people wanted hidden. He set the laptop on the dining table and opened it without sitting down.

"Switzerland," he said. "Three years ago. Private clinic outside Zurich."

He turned the screen toward me. Medical records. Two names I recognized. Ashlyn Moreno. Keily Warren. Delivery dates six weeks apart. Both listed Seth Hoffman as the father.

I looked at the dates. Three years ago. The same month Seth and I went to Tokyo for the investor summit. The same month he told me he needed to stay an extra week for meetings. The same month I flew home alone.

I didn't sit down. I stood there reading the records on the screen. Healthy deliveries. Both boys. Birth certificates filed under Swiss privacy laws. No U.S. registration. No paper trail unless you knew where to look.

Marcus pulled up another file. "There's more."

Financial records. Shell companies in the Cayman Islands. Equity transfers structured through offshore trusts. Millions moved in increments small enough to avoid automatic flags but large enough to build something permanent. The trusts were established in the children's names. The children I didn't know existed until seventy-two hours ago.

I read every line. Marcus didn't talk. He knew better. When I finished, I closed the laptop.

"How many people know?" I asked.

"Just the team. No one outside."

"Keep it that way."

He nodded. He picked up the laptop and the file box. He didn't ask if I was okay. We didn't do that. He left.

I stood in the dining room after he was gone. The sun was coming up. Light hit the crystal vase on the credenza and broke into pieces on the wall. I thought about the childfree pact. The conversation we had when we were twenty-three, sitting on the fire escape of our first real apartment. Seth said we didn't need children. We had each other. We had the work. That was enough. I believed him. I gave up the idea of being a mother because he asked me to. Because I thought it was something we were choosing together.

It wasn't a choice. It was a cage.

I went upstairs. I showered. I dressed in a gray suit with a white shirt. I pinned my hair back. I looked in the mirror and saw the scar along my collarbone. The one from sixteen years ago. The one I got when I was captured by the gang that wanted to destroy us. The one I thought was random violence. I touched it with two fingers. Then I went downstairs.

Seth came home at eight. He walked in like it was a normal morning. He set his keys on the entry table. He was still wearing the tuxedo pants from last night with a different shirt. He looked tired but not worried.

"We need to talk," I said.

He glanced at me. "About what?"

"The brownstone."

He walked past me into the kitchen. He poured coffee. "What about it?"

"You're moving them in."

"It's practical," he said. He didn't look at me. "They're senior staff now. Proximity makes sense."

"They're two minutes away."

"Exactly."

I stood in the doorway. I watched him add cream to his coffee. He stirred it slowly. He set the spoon on the counter and aligned it parallel to the edge. Then he turned around.

"You're being emotional about a business arrangement," he said.

His voice was calm. Even. The voice he used in board meetings when someone asked a question he found tedious.

I didn't move. I looked at him across the kitchen island. The man I ran away with when I was sixteen. The man I built everything with. The man who just told me I was emotional about the systematic erasure of my entire life.

"A business arrangement," I repeated.

"Yes."

He picked up his coffee. He took a sip. He looked at me over the rim of the cup with the faint impatience of someone who has already moved on from a conversation the other person is still trying to have.

I turned around. I walked out of the kitchen. I went into the study and closed the door. I sat at the desk. I didn't cry. I didn't scream. I pulled out my phone and opened the encrypted message thread with Marcus.

I typed four words.

*Find me everything.*

I hit send. I set the phone down. I looked at the window. The brownstone next door was visible through the trees. Lights were on in the upper windows. I could see shadows moving behind the curtains.

I sat there and watched the shadows until my phone buzzed.

Marcus: *Already on it.*

I put the phone in my pocket. I stood up. I walked out of the study, past the kitchen where Seth was still drinking his coffee, and out the front door. I had work to do.
