Chapter 1

I stood outside Cayson's office, my hand resting protectively over the gentle swell of my belly. The ultrasound photos felt warm in the small gift bag I clutched, their edges crisp against my fingers. Today was special. Today, I would surprise my husband with the first clear images of our baby—his child, our future, the family we'd been dreaming of for months.

The private lounge door was slightly ajar. I pushed it open with a smile, already imagining his face lighting up when he saw the tiny form on the grainy images.

The world stopped.

Cayson stood with Milena—my sister, my blood—locked in an embrace so intimate it burned the air from my lungs. His hand rested on her lower back with the casual familiarity of long practice, her fingers curled possessively into his collar. They didn't jump apart at my entrance. They didn't even flinch.

Milena turned slowly, her lips still flushed, and met my eyes. The smile that spread across her face wasn't the smile of someone caught in wrongdoing. It was the smile of a predator who'd finally cornered its prey.

"Lilah," she said, her voice honey-sweet and venomous. "You're early."

Cayson's hand remained on her back. He looked at me with eyes so cold they belonged to a stranger.

"What is this?" My voice came out smaller than I intended, barely more than a whisper.

"This," Cayson said, his tone clinical and precise, "is the arrangement. The one you've been part of since our wedding day."

He stepped away from Milena, straightening his tie with the same steady hands that had once held me through the night. There was no shame in his movements, no guilt—only the calm efficiency of a man explaining business logistics.

"Milena can never carry a child," he continued, as if discussing quarterly reports. "Her condition makes it impossible. We needed a solution. You were the solution."

The ultrasound photos slipped from my numb fingers, scattering across the polished floor like fallen leaves.

"You were chosen," he said, his eyes never leaving mine. "Carefully selected. Your body, your health, your fertility—all factors we considered. The marriage, the ring, the vows... stage management. The baby you're carrying isn't ours. It's hers. It will be raised as hers. You were never my wife, Lilah. You were always the surrogate."

Milena's laugh was soft, satisfied. "I told you she'd figure it out eventually," she murmured to Cayson. "She was always too smart for her own good."

I stared at the man I'd loved, the man I'd built my life around, and saw nothing of the person I thought I knew. Every memory, every moment we'd shared—all of it was constructed around a lie so monstrous I couldn't breathe.

My hands shook as I clutched my belly, protecting the child that was suddenly at the center of a nightmare I didn't understand. "You can't do this," I whispered. "This is my baby."

"It was never yours," Milena said, her voice sharp now. "It was always meant to be mine. You were just the vessel."

I turned and ran.

The cold New York air hit my face as I burst onto the street, the ultrasound photos still clutched in my trembling hand. I found a bench and collapsed onto it, my breath coming in short, painful gasps.

People walked past—normal people living normal lives, unaware that my entire world had just imploded. I stared at the photos in my hand, at the tiny form that had been my joy just hours ago. Now, looking at it felt like staring into an abyss.

For weeks, I'd been planning the nursery. I'd been feeling the baby's first flutters. I'd been dreaming of holding my child, of watching Cayson's face soften as he became a father.

All of it—every moment, every hope—had been built on lies.

A car pulled up to the curb, and Cayson stepped out, his expression unreadable. "Lilah," he said, his voice firm. "You need to come home. For the baby's safety."

I looked up at him, at the stranger wearing my husband's face, and felt something inside me begin to break.

"You'll need bed rest," he continued, reaching for my arm. "The stress isn't good for the pregnancy. Milena will help take care of you."

His fingers closed around my wrist, and I realized with growing horror that I wasn't being asked to come home.

I was being taken prisoner.
