Chapter 3

The nurse led us down a narrow hallway.

The air smelled like alcohol wipes and cold metal. She opened the door to Exam Room 3. Inside was a high examination table lined with crinkly white paper, a rolling stool, and a stainless steel tray covered with a blue cloth.

Arthur stayed outside in the hall with Diana. Kaleb shoved me inside and shut the door.

"Sit down, Cora," Kaleb said softly.

"No." I backed against the wall.

A middle-aged doctor in green scrubs walked in behind us. He had tired eyes and held an electronic tablet. He looked at Kaleb, then at me. He could see the red marks on my wrists. He could see my chest heaving.

"Is there a problem here?" the doctor asked. His voice was cautious.

"She's having a severe panic attack, Doctor," Kaleb said smoothly. His voice sounded full of sorrow. "She isn't taking her medication. We agreed on this termination yesterday, but now she’s dissociating."

"That is a lie," I said. I looked right at the doctor. "He is forcing me. Call the police."

The doctor blinked. He shifted his weight from one foot to the other. He looked at the paperwork in his hand, then glanced at Kaleb. Kaleb was wearing a tailored suit. He looked wealthy, respectable, and completely sane. I was disheveled, bruised, and trapped.

"Ma'am, we need to do an ultrasound first—" the doctor began.

"She just needs the sedative," Kaleb interrupted.

Before I could move, Kaleb grabbed my arm. He yanked me toward the table. I kicked his shins, but he didn't let go. He shoved me down onto the vinyl mattress. The paper tore beneath my back with a loud screech.

He climbed over me. He planted his knees on either side of my hips and pressed his full weight into my shoulders.

"Kaleb, stop!" I gasped, fighting for air.

His face was inches from mine. His eyes were wide and wild, stripped of every ounce of charm. His breath smelled like mint and sour coffee.

"Stop fighting, Cora," he whispered right into my ear. His voice was low, fast, and venomous. "Just shut your mouth and let them do it. It will be over in ten minutes. You’re only making this harder on yourself."

His hands clamped around my collarbones like iron clamps. The bone bruised under his thumbs.

I looked at the nurse standing near the counter. "Help me," I choked out.

The nurse looked down at the floor. She picked up a plastic tray and organized the syringes. The doctor stood frozen by the door, his jaw tight, paralyzed between protocol and a rich man's domestic drama. Neither of them moved. Nobody was going to save me.

My right hand was free. My fingers slipped into my coat pocket.

My phone was there.

I didn't try to pull it out. I knew the buttons by heart. I clicked the power button five times in rapid succession—the emergency shortcut I had set up years ago.

A sharp beep sounded from my pocket. Then the line opened.

"Dad," I said, looking straight into Kaleb's cold eyes. "Oakridge Specialty Care. Queens. Exam Room Three."

Kaleb froze.

He looked down at my coat. Realization hit him like a bucket of ice water. He reached into my pocket, yanked the phone out, and smashed it against the tiled floor. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of black glass.

"Who was that?" Kaleb hissed, shaking my shoulders. "Who did you call?"

I didn't answer. I pressed my thumbnail hard into my index finger, anchoring myself against the pain.

"Get the sedative," Kaleb shouted at the doctor. "Do it right now!"

The doctor backed away a step. "Sir, I can't administer anything without written consent—"

"I am her husband!" Kaleb roared.

Thirty-four minutes passed.

They felt like thirty-four years. Kaleb kept me pinned to the table, his hands digging into my skin, his eyes darting toward the locked door every few seconds. Diana tapped nervously on the small glass window from the hallway.

Then the building shook.

A loud, splintering crash echoed down the corridor. Diana screamed.

The exam room door was kicked off its latch. It slammed violently against the drywall, leaving a deep dent in the plaster.

Four men stepped into the room.

Two of them were massive, broad-shouldered ex-cops in dark jackets. Beside them stood Jonathan Vance, my father's senior legal counsel.

And right between them stood Malcolm Hill.

My father wore a charcoal wool overcoat and a gray silk tie. His silver hair was perfectly combed. His face was entirely devoid of emotion. He looked like a judge stepping into a room full of condemned men.

The air vanished from the room.

Malcolm didn't yell. He didn't rush. He simply stopped in the center of the doorway.

"Step away from my daughter," my father said.

His voice wasn't loud. It was a low, flat rumble that carried the weight of thirty years of federal courtrooms.

"You are currently committing aggravated assault, kidnapping, and unlawful imprisonment," Malcolm said evenly. "If your hands remain on her body for three more seconds, you will leave this facility in federal custody."

Kaleb looked at the door. He looked at my father.

All the color drained from Kaleb's face. His mouth fell slightly open. His handsome, confident smirk dissolved into absolute, sickening horror. He looked like a man who had stepped off a curb and realized a freight train was two inches from his nose.

He didn't move fast enough.

One of my father’s men crossed the room in two strides. He grabbed Kaleb by the scruff of his expensive suit jacket and hauled him off me like a bag of trash.

Kaleb hit the tiled floor hard on his knees.

"Malcolm—please, wait," Kaleb stammered, raising his hands, his voice trembling like a child's. "You don't understand, Cora was having a breakdown—"

My father didn't even look down at him.

Malcolm stepped past Kaleb as if he were nothing more than a stain on the linoleum. He reached the side of the table, stripped off his heavy coat, and wrapped it gently around my trembling shoulders.

His hand was warm against my hair.

"I'm here, Cora," my father whispered softly. "It's over."

From the floor, Kaleb stared up at us, his eyes hollow with terror. He finally understood what he had done. And who he had challenged.

It was the first time all day I took a full, clean breath.
