Chapter 5

Victor Salinas worked out of a windowless office near Columbia. I never went there. Everything moved through Franklin's encrypted channels.

But I saw the results. Spreadsheets. Wire transfer records. Corporate filings from jurisdictions I'd never heard of. Eleven shell companies. Four countries. Thirty-two years of money flowing through fake biotech ventures that existed only on paper.

Franklin forwarded me Victor's message: 'When this breaks, it will break everything.'

I sat in my small room at the end of the hall and opened my notebook. Wrote one word in my private shorthand.

Good.

Then I closed it and went to make Dorian breakfast.

Nadia Osei was twenty-six. Brilliant. Terrified.

Franklin met her at a coffee shop on Amsterdam. He told me about it later through the secure channel. How she'd arrived fifteen minutes early and ordered nothing. How her hands shook when she pulled out the USB drive containing her original datasets—the ones that appeared word-for-word in Hadlee's papers.

'I documented everything,' she told Franklin. 'But I didn't know what to do with it. She's Dr. Carlson's co-lead. Who was going to believe me?'

Franklin made her tea. Let her talk. Two hours.

She agreed to testify before the ethics board.

I didn't know Nadia personally. But when Franklin sent me her name, I looked her up. Found her faculty page. Saw her face.

She looked like someone who still believed the system was supposed to work.

I hoped, for her sake, that she was right.

Dorian came home on a Tuesday with the announcement.

'The summit keynote is confirmed,' he said. He was smiling. The kind of smile that used to make me smile back. 'Javits Center. Three thousand attendees. Live broadcast to forty countries.'

I looked up from the journal article I wasn't reading. 'That's wonderful.'

'You'll be there,' he said. 'On stage with me.'

I blinked. 'On stage?'

'As proof of concept.' He sat down beside me on the sofa. Put his hand over mine. 'You're a carrier of the GH-7 marker. The protocol I developed was designed for exactly this scenario. You're the perfect demonstration that the science works.'

I stared at him.

He kept talking. 'Hadlee will present the methodology. I'll present the results. And you'll stand there as living evidence that we've solved a problem that's plagued families like ours for generations.'

Living evidence.

I made myself nod. 'Of course. Whatever you need.'

He kissed my forehead. 'I knew you'd understand.'

That night, he rehearsed in the living room. Set up his laptop. Ran through his slides. Practiced his pacing.

I sat on the couch with a book in my lap and memorized everything.

The presentation software he used. The remote clicker in his hand. The way he'd configured the display settings. The exact moment he would turn to gesture at the screen behind him.

I memorized it all.

The night before the summit, I met Franklin and Victor in a conference room at Columbia. Secured floor. Keycard access only.

Victor was younger than I'd expected. Sharp eyes. Quiet voice. He laid out the logistics like he was briefing a tactical operation.

'FBI will have four agents in the auditorium. Two at the main exits. One backstage. They'll move on my signal.' He looked at me. 'You'll have approximately ninety seconds between when the first slide goes up and when security realizes something's wrong. Can you work with that?'

'Yes,' I said.

Franklin leaned forward. 'Walk us through it again.'

I pulled out the presentation drive. The real one. Not the one Dorian thought he'd be using tomorrow.

'He'll introduce me. I'll take the podium. He'll expect me to give a patient testimony—two minutes, pre-approved script. Instead, I'll swap the drive. The first slide will be the fabricated trial data. Then the emails. Then the financial records.' I paused. 'Then the medical records.'

Victor nodded. 'The miscarriage report.'

'And the ultrasound images.' I opened the folder on the table. Pulled out the photos. Black and white. Grainy. A small shape in the center that used to be a heartbeat.

Franklin looked at them for a long moment. Then at me.

'Are you certain?' he asked quietly.

I'd been waiting for that question.

I looked at the ultrasound images. At the date printed in the corner. At the measurements that would never grow.

Then I looked at Franklin.

'I've been certain,' I said, 'since the night I woke up in that hospital room alone.'

I closed the folder. Slid it into my bag.

Victor stood. 'Then we're ready.'

Franklin walked me to the elevator. We didn't speak until the doors opened.

'Stella,' he said. 'After tomorrow, everything changes.'

I stepped inside. Turned to face him.

'Everything already changed,' I said. 'Tomorrow, everyone else finds out.'

The doors closed.

I went home. Dorian was asleep. Hadlee's light was off.

I lay down in my small room and stared at the ceiling. Didn't count the tiles. Didn't need to.

I knew exactly what I was going to do.

And in eighteen hours, so would the rest of the world.
