Chapter 2

Three days after the clinic, I was still bleeding.

Not much. Just enough to remind me, every time I stood up too fast, what I had done. What I had lost. What I had chosen.

I moved through the penthouse slowly, carefully, like someone learning to walk again. I wore loose clothes. I kept to the edges of rooms. I had become so good at being invisible over ten years that hiding a recovery was almost easy.

Almost.

Anastasia noticed everything.

She didn't say anything directly. She never did. That wasn't her style. Instead, she moved through the penthouse like she was already measuring it for new furniture. On the second morning, I opened my closet and found my clothes pushed to one side, her things hanging in the center space—silk blouses, structured blazers, a row of heels I'd never seen before. She'd done it while I slept.

I stood there looking at it for a long moment. Then I pressed my thumbnail into my palm and closed the door.

In the kitchen, she rearranged the spice cabinet. She replaced the coffee I'd kept for years with a brand she preferred. She asked the housekeeper to move the flowers I'd arranged in the dining room because they clashed with her aesthetic vision.

She never raised her voice. She never had to.

When I passed her in the hallway that afternoon, she smiled at me. It was the smile of a woman who had already won and wanted to make sure I knew it.

"You look tired, Julissa," she said softly. "You should rest more. Collin worries."

Collin had not spoken to me in three days.

I smiled back. "Thank you, Anastasia."

I went to my room and sat on the edge of the bed until my hands stopped shaking.

---

The dinner party was her idea, of course.

Twenty of Collin's most powerful associates. The kind of men who built cities and buried bodies with equal efficiency. She wanted them to see her in this penthouse, at this table, wearing that ring. She wanted them to understand what she was now and what that made me.

She told me three days in advance. Casual, almost gentle. "I thought it would be lovely if you joined us. In the background, of course. You know how these evenings work."

I did know. I had spent ten years knowing.

But on the evening of the dinner, I couldn't do it. I lay on my bed in the blue hour before the guests arrived and I simply could not make my body stand. Not from grief. Not from anger. From something more basic than either of those things. I was physically depleted in a way that went bone-deep, and the thought of standing in that dining room while Anastasia performed her victory for an audience of twenty men made something in my chest go very, very still.

So I stayed in my room.

I heard the guests arrive. The low rumble of expensive voices. The clink of crystal. Anastasia's laugh, perfectly calibrated—warm enough to be charming, soft enough to be delicate.

Around ten o'clock, I heard her voice change.

I couldn't make out the words through the door, but I knew the register. I had heard it before, directed at me. The trembling quality. The barely-contained hurt. The performance of a woman trying very hard not to cry.

Twenty minutes later, the guests were gone.

Fifteen minutes after that, my door opened.

Collin stood in the doorway. He didn't turn on the light. He didn't need to. I could see him clearly enough in the dark—the set of his jaw, the particular stillness that meant he was controlling something cold and furious inside himself.

"You humiliated her," he said.

I looked at him from the bed. I didn't sit up.

"She planned that evening for weeks. She wanted everything to be perfect." His voice was quiet. That was always worse than shouting. "And you couldn't manage to show your face for two hours."

I thought about telling him. About the clinic, the procedure, the recovery room where I had wept alone into a paper pillow with no one holding my hand. I thought about showing him the bruise on my palm where my thumbnail had been.

I said nothing.

"You're not leaving this penthouse," he said. "Not until I say so. Your phone is being cut off tonight. You want to behave like you can't be trusted, then I'll treat you accordingly."

He was looking at me like I was a problem he was solving. Not a person. Never a person.

I held his gaze and kept my face very still.

"Do you have anything to say?" he asked.

I thought about the burner phone I had already surrendered. I thought about the message I had already sent. I thought about a voice on the other end of a line saying, simply, *Tell me where and when.*

"No," I said.

He left without closing the door all the way. I listened to his footsteps fade down the hall toward the room where Anastasia was waiting.

I pressed my thumbnail into my palm one last time.

Then I let go.
