Chapter 3

The first lawyer Nora met wanted to turn her into a headline.

He arrived in a navy suit with an associate carrying three legal pads. Within minutes he was describing emergency injunctions, medical malpractice, intentional infliction of emotional distress, and the publicity leverage available when the abandoned patient happened to be married to a prominent medical-device executive.

“Abandoned,” Nora repeated. The word emerged more clearly than most.

“Legally, we would be careful with terminology.” He smiled as if they shared a joke. “Publicly, however—”

Nora pressed the call button until a nurse entered and removed him.

The second lawyer, Claire Donovan, came alone. She wore rain boots beneath her gray suit and put no recorder on the table.

“What do you want?” Claire asked.

Nora had spent the morning practicing the answer with a speech therapist. “Privacy. Treatment. Divorce.”

“In that order?”

“Yes.”

Claire nodded. “Then we begin with a health-care privacy directive, revoke any previous proxy authority, appoint a temporary agent you trust, and notify both hospitals in writing. We can file for divorce after you are medically stable enough to participate. Your husband will learn you have regained capacity, but he does not have to learn where you are.”

“My son?”

“Same rule, if that is what you want.”

Nora stared at her right hand. It had closed around Tessa’s wrist with the strength of terror, yet now it trembled beneath the weight of a plastic spoon.

“For now,” she said.

Claire did not call it cruel. She did not suggest motherhood required immediate absolution. She wrote the instruction down.

Across the city, Julian used every connection available to a medical student and discovered how thoroughly privacy law could become a wall. Harbor Mercy would not confirm a patient by Nora’s name. St. Catherine’s would release records to Adrian but could not disclose another facility’s information. The ambulance company confirmed only that transfer of care had occurred safely.

Adrian hired a private investigator before noon.

“If she is capable of refusing us, then she is capable of being influenced,” he told Julian. “Someone may be exploiting her confusion.”

“She said no.”

“After a brain injury.”

“She knew enough to know who we were.”

Adrian looked away.

Julian called his mother’s number forty-three times. He left eleven messages. The first were frantic declarations of love. By the seventh he was explaining the signature. By the eleventh he could no longer speak.

He sent a text instead.

I thought we were saving the rest of the family. I know how that sounds. Please let me see you.

The message remained undelivered. Adrian had disconnected Nora’s mobile account two weeks earlier to reduce “unnecessary expenses.”

That evening Celeste came to the house carrying Thai food and a folder of revised financing documents. She wore the sapphire ring.

Julian stared at it until she noticed.

“Your father loaned it to me for the campaign,” she said, touching the stone. “The photographs were meant to reassure investors that Northstar and Vale are aligned.”

“It was my great-grandmother’s.”

“Then it carries exactly the continuity we wanted.”

Julian looked at Adrian. “Take it off her.”

Celeste’s expression remained composed. Adrian’s did not.

“Not tonight,” his father said.

Julian swept the food from the counter. Containers burst on the floor, curry streaking the white cabinets Nora had chosen. “Mom is awake somewhere, and she is wearing Mom’s ring.”

“Your mother is receiving care,” Adrian snapped. “And if Northstar walks away, there will be nothing left for her to come home to.”

“Maybe she doesn’t want to come home.”

The sentence silenced the room.

At Harbor Mercy, Nora spent twenty minutes trying to stand between parallel bars. Her left leg remembered nothing. Sweat ran down her neck. Hannah Reyes stood nearby but did not touch her.

“Again,” Nora said.

“You have done enough for today.”

“Again.”

On the third attempt, Nora’s knee buckled. A therapist caught her before she struck the floor. Pain flared along her hip, followed by a burst of humiliating tears.

Hannah waited until Nora’s breathing steadied. “Anger can move you,” she said, “but it cannot be the only thing holding you upright.”

Nora wiped her face with an uncooperative hand. “It is today.”

Claire returned after dinner with copies of the privacy directives and a tablet. The hospital needed a short recorded statement demonstrating Nora understood her choices.

The camera showed a woman Nora barely recognized—hollow-cheeked, hair hacked short around an old surgical incision, one eyelid lower than the other.

Claire asked her name, the date, and where she was. Nora answered slowly. Then came the central question.

“Do you understand that refusing contact with your husband and son may cause them distress and may limit their ability to participate in your recovery?”

“Yes.”

“Is anyone pressuring you to refuse contact?”

“No.”

“Do you want either of them notified of your location?”

Nora pictured Julian at seven, asleep against her shoulder on a flight to London. Julian at sixteen, calling after his first breakup. Julian beneath the ambulance-bay lights, pen in hand, refusing to look at her.

“No,” she said.

Claire stopped the recording.

Nora asked her to begin the divorce petition.

After Claire left, Nora listened to Julian’s saved messages through the hospital tablet. His voice moved from panic to explanation to silence. She deleted none of them. Erasing evidence would not erase love, and preserving love would not require an answer. She asked the nurse to store the files with her legal documents, then turned the tablet facedown before Adrian’s public statement could appear again.
