Chapter 4

Poppy came home on Friday afternoon looking smaller than I'd ever seen her, wrapped in a cashmere blanket Lucien had bought from the hospital gift shop because he didn't know what else to do with his hands. She went straight to the guest suite without looking at me. Lucien followed her like a shadow, carrying her purse, her phone, a bag of prescriptions he set on her nightstand with the careful reverence of a man performing care for an audience that wasn't there.

I stood in the hallway holding a tray — ginger tea, plain toast, the kind of thing you bring someone who's been sick — and waited until he came back out.

"She okay?"

He rubbed his face. "They don't know what caused it. Stress, maybe. Bad shellfish." He looked at me like he'd just remembered I existed. "You didn't put anything weird in her food, did you?"

I held his gaze. "No."

"Good." He walked past me toward his office, already pulling out his phone. "I've got calls."

I set the tray outside Poppy's door and went back to my room, where I locked the door and opened my laptop and worked for six uninterrupted hours.

Lucien's home server had a password only three people knew. I'd watched him type it over his shoulder nine months ago and memorized it in the time it took him to hit enter. The files I needed were buried four folders deep under names like *2019_Tax_Archive* and *Vendor_Contracts_OLD*, the kind of thing no one opens twice. I copied the digital signature keys onto an encrypted drive, then cleared the access logs and closed the connection before the automatic backup could flag the session.

By midnight, I had everything I needed to move the last of the commercial properties — the office tower in Midtown, the retail complex in Brooklyn, the warehouse conversion in Long Island City — out of King Industries and into holding companies so far removed from my name they didn't even share a continent.

I made myself sleep for four hours. I dreamed about my father's magnolia tree, the way it looked the summer before he died, branches so heavy with blooms they bent toward the ground.

Monday morning, Desmond Park requested an emergency board meeting.

I wasn't supposed to be there. Spouses didn't attend board meetings. But Lucien's assistant had double-booked him with a investor call he couldn't move, so he'd sent me to take notes — *just sit there and write things down, don't talk* — which meant I got to watch the whole thing from a chair against the wall, invisible again, exactly where I needed to be.

Desmond stood at the head of the table with a printout thick enough to be a weapon. His voice was quiet. That made it worse.

"Forty-seven million dollars." He set the stack down. "Gone. Across six subsidiaries. Meridian Holdings, Aldergate Trust, Prime Commercial — all of them. Transferred out over the last eleven months in increments designed to stay just under audit triggers."

The room went still in the way rooms do right before someone starts shouting.

Lucien leaned forward. "What do you mean, gone."

"I mean moved. Liquidated. Rerouted through offshore accounts we don't control and can't trace without a federal subpoena." Desmond pulled a page from the stack. "Every transfer authorized with executive credentials. Your credentials."

Lucien's face did something I'd never seen before. "I didn't authorize this."

"Then someone with access to your signature did." Desmond slid another page across the table. "The IP addresses trace back to external access points. This one —" he tapped the paper "— matches the last known address of Remy Gibson."

I watched Lucien's jaw clench. Remy. Mistress sixty-seven. The one who'd tried to blackmail him two years ago, the one he'd buried under an NDA and a payout he still resented.

"That bitch." His voice dropped into something flat and cold. "She said she was done. She signed the agreement."

Desmond pulled up an email on the screen behind him. The sender line read *R.Gibson.Consulting@archmail.net*. The subject: *I want what I'm owed.*

"This came through three weeks ago to your personal account. You didn't flag it?"

"I get a hundred emails a day. I don't read half of them." Lucien stood, chair scraping. "Find her. I want criminal charges. Fraud, theft, whatever puts her in a cell. I want her destroyed."

The board members looked at each other. One of them cleared his throat. "Lucien, if this goes public —"

"I don't care if it goes public. She stole from me." He turned to his general counsel. "Do it. Today."

I kept my pen moving across the notepad, recording every word, my handwriting steady and small. The email address I'd created six months ago using a VPN and a name that wasn't mine. The wire confirmations I'd doctored using templates I'd taught myself to forge. The threatening messages I'd sent from burner phones bought with cash in neighborhoods I'd never been to before and would never go back to.

Remy Gibson, who I'd never met, who'd left behind a diary and a warning and nothing else, was about to take the fall for every dollar I'd moved, every asset I'd stripped, every piece of this empire I'd spent a year dismantling.

I felt nothing. Or I felt everything, and I'd learned to make them look the same.

Lucien slammed his hand on the table. "Meeting's over. Desmond, I want updates every hour. Everyone else, out."

I stood with the others and walked toward the door, and just before I reached it, Lucien called after me.

"Hailey."

I turned.

"You get all that?"

I held up the notepad. "Every word."

"Good." He was already on his phone again. "Type it up and send it to legal."

I nodded and left, and I did not let myself smile until I was alone in the elevator going down.
