Chapter 2

The summons came at nine the next morning, delivered by text instead of the intercom this time. *My office. Now.*

I found him behind his desk with a folder squared perfectly in front of him, sleeves rolled, a pen already uncapped and waiting like a prop in a play he'd rehearsed. He didn't look up when I came in. That was new. Usually he liked to watch my face.

"Sit."

I sat.

He slid the folder across the desk without a word, and I opened it slowly, the way I open everything now — like it might be wired to something.

It was an amendment. Three pages, dense with the kind of language lawyers get paid to make boring so no one reads it twice. But I read everything twice. Line one gave Poppy Jimenez permanent residence in the penthouse, effective immediately. Line two added her as an authorized user on two joint accounts. Line three was a courtesy clause, the kind meant to make the whole thing sound civilized — *for the purpose of maintaining household harmony.*

"This isn't a request," Lucien said, still not looking at me. "I'm telling you as a courtesy. You'll adjust."

"Where will she sleep?"

His jaw ticked. "Does it matter?"

"I'm asking so I know which room to have cleaned."

He finally looked up, searching my face for the crack he wanted. I gave him nothing. Just the same flat patience I'd been giving him for months, the kind that used to make him slam doors and now just made him tired.

"The guest suite. For now." He tapped the desk. "Sign it."

I turned to the last page, where the signature line waited, and under it, buried in a sub-clause I remembered drafting language for myself eight months ago when I'd asked our attorney to "streamline the household administrative authority" — a phrase so dull no one had ever questioned it — there it was. *Signatory authority extended to Hailey King, spouse, over King Industries subsidiaries Aldergate Holdings and Prime Meridian Trust, contingent upon execution of the foregoing amendment.*

He had no idea what he'd just handed me. Two subsidiaries I hadn't been able to touch in almost a year, and he was giving them to me himself, in exchange for a woman sleeping down the hall.

I picked up the pen. My hand didn't shake. I signed my name the way I always sign it now — small, neat, unremarkable.

"Good girl," he said, already reaching for his phone.

I stood, folded the copy he slid back to me, and walked out before my face could do anything he might enjoy.

He came home at three in the morning smelling like scotch and someone else's perfume, and I know because I was awake — I'm always awake — when the guest room door banged open against the wall.

"Hailey." His voice slurred at the edges, thick with something that wasn't affection. He got onto the bed before I'd even sat up, one knee pinning the blanket, then my thigh, his weight coming down heavy and wrong.

"Lucien." I kept my voice level. Level costs more than screaming ever did. "Get off."

"C'mon." His mouth found my neck, sour with liquor. "Miss you. Miss this."

I thought about the folder in Remy Gibson's diary, the word *positive* typed in a font too small for the weight it carried. I thought about his blood, and mine, and how one bad night could undo eleven months of work in the time it takes a heart to beat twice.

"I'm bleeding," I said.

His hand stilled.

"I started my period an hour ago." I reached into the nightstand drawer, unhurried, and pulled out the small foil-wrapped thing I keep there for exactly this — for the nights the intercom buzzes, the nights I hear his key in the door. I held it up between us like evidence. "Do you want to keep going?"

He recoiled like I'd shown him something diseased, which was funny, in the way that nothing is actually funny anymore. "Jesus. Fine. Christ." He rolled off me onto his back, muttering something about how I always did this, always found some way to ruin it, and within four minutes his breathing dropped into the slow, wet rhythm of a man who'd stopped fighting sleep.

I counted to two hundred before I moved.

His phone was face-down on the mattress between us, screen dark, and I lifted his hand — heavier than I expected, warm, unbearably familiar — and pressed his thumb to the sensor. It unlocked on the second try.

I found the document already queued in his email, the one our shell entity's counsel had sent for "final review" three days ago, the one he'd been too busy with Poppy to open. Eighteen million dollars of Manhattan real estate, every commercial property King Industries had left in this city, folded into a transfer he'd never bothered to read past the subject line.

I scrolled to the signature field and pressed his thumb again.

*Signature complete.*

I set the phone back exactly where it had been, angled exactly the way it was, and lay down beside the man I used to love, listening to him breathe like nothing in the world had just ended.
