Chapter 5

I drove north on the Connecticut Turnpike with my arm bandaged and my phone turned off. The highway lights blurred past. I didn't remember getting in the car. I didn't remember leaving the hospital. I just drove.

Somewhere past Stamford, I pulled onto the shoulder and stopped.

Engine running. Hands on the wheel. I stared at the windshield and saw nothing.

Joanna's face. The service corridor. My mother's voice on the phone — that sound, that specific sound a person makes when their heart stops while they're still breathing.

I pressed two fingers against my sternum. Felt the scar. Held them there.

I don't know how long I sat like that.

A tap on the passenger window.

I turned my head.

Cassian Black stood outside my car in the dark, wearing a suit jacket over what looked like clothes he'd pulled on in a hurry. No tie. Collar open. He looked at me through the glass with an expression I couldn't read.

I unlocked the door.

He opened it. Slid into the passenger seat. Closed the door. The highway noise became muffled.

He didn't ask if I was all right. He didn't ask what happened. He just sat there.

I looked at him. "How did you know where I was?"

"I didn't." His voice was quiet. "I've been driving this route for three hours looking."

I turned back to the windshield.

We sat in silence. A truck passed. Then another. The car rocked slightly in the wind.

"My aunt jumped," I said. My voice sounded like someone else's. "My mother's heart stopped. My father had a stroke. All in six hours."

Cassian didn't move.

"Nicholas set his dog on me at The Plaza," I continued. "In front of two hundred people. Because Joanna called Kenia a thief."

I looked down at my bandaged arm. The gauze was clean. White. The blood had soaked through hours ago and dried.

"I gave him my heart," I said. "Literally. Pieces of my heart. And he doesn't even know."

Cassian reached over. Turned off the engine. The sudden silence was enormous.

"Give me your keys," he said.

I looked at him.

"Sariah." His voice was very steady. "Give me your keys."

I pulled them from the ignition. He took them. Got out. Came around to my side and opened the door.

"Move over," he said.

I did.

He got in. Adjusted the seat. Started the engine. Pulled back onto the highway without another word.

I watched the road. He drove exactly at the speed limit. His hands were steady on the wheel.

"Where are we going?" I asked.

"Connecticut."

I didn't ask how he knew. I closed my eyes.

---

The Porter estate was dark when we arrived. Cassian pulled into the circular drive and turned off the engine. He handed me the keys.

"Do you want me to come in?" he asked.

I looked at the house. My father's house. The lights were off. The housekeeper had gone home.

"No," I said.

He nodded. Got out. Walked to his own car — I hadn't even noticed it parked behind the hedges. He'd driven here first. Waited. Then gone looking for me.

I watched him pull away. Then I went inside.

---

My father's study smelled like leather and old paper. I turned on the desk lamp. Sat in his chair.

The files were exactly where I knew they'd be. Emmett Porter was a methodical man. He labeled everything.

I opened the folder marked *Porter Industries — Ownership Restructure*.

The documents were dated three weeks before his stroke. Every page was precise. Legal. Irrevocable. Controlling interest in Porter Industries transferred entirely to me — insulated from any marital claim, any divorce settlement, any external challenge.

I read through it twice. Then I saw the note.

Handwritten. Tucked between the final page and the back cover. My father's cramped, careful script.

*You were always the one who would build it right.*

I held it for a long time. Then I folded it carefully and put it in my pocket.

I sat in his chair. Looked at the empty room. Felt the scar beneath my blouse.

The grief in my chest was still there. But it wasn't shapeless anymore.

It had structure now. Edges. A purpose.

I opened my laptop.

Sent Gerald Foss a message: *File every motion Monday morning. I want the penthouse, the Hamptons estate, the portfolios, and the Spencer Capital shares. All of it.*

His reply came within minutes: *Confirmed. Documentation is ready.*

I sent another message. This one to Eugene Richards: *I need surveillance footage from Spencer Capital's internal security systems. Everything from the past eighteen months. Nicholas doesn't know it exists. I do.*

Eugene's reply was immediate: *Already compiled. Sending encrypted files now.*

I opened the files. Watched the first clip. Nicholas and Kenia in his office. Her hand on his chest. His voice, recorded clearly: "Sariah doesn't understand what real devotion looks like. She never did."

I watched three more clips. Then I closed the laptop.

I pressed two fingers against my sternum. Felt the scar. The nine-year-old evidence of what I had given.

I held them there until my hands stopped shaking.

Then I stood up.

I turned off the light.

I walked out of my father's study and into the rest of my life.
