Chapter 1

The Fort Bragg family support center smelled like burnt coffee and industrial carpet cleaner. I sat in the folding chair and tried to focus on the woman at the front talking about deployment stress. Around me, other military wives nodded and took notes. I kept my hands folded in my lap and my face pleasant.

I'd been coming to these meetings for eight years. Always alone.

The session ended. People stood and clustered in groups, laughing and making plans for lunch. I picked up my purse and headed for the door.

"Emberly?"

I turned. Theodore Rivera stood near the coffee station, holding a paper cup. He was in civilian clothes — jeans and a button-down — but he still stood like a soldier. Straight back. Steady eyes.

"Theodore." I managed a small smile. "I didn't know you were in town."

"Temporary assignment. Just a few days." He gestured toward the door. "Walk you to your car?"

Outside, the North Carolina heat pressed down like a damp towel. We crossed the parking lot in silence. Theodore had always been quiet. Polite. The kind of man who noticed things and didn't say much about them.

We reached my car. I unlocked it but didn't get in.

"How's Jonathan?" Theodore asked.

The question sat between us like something sharp.

"Good," I said automatically. "Busy. You know how it is."

Theodore nodded slowly. He pulled his phone from his pocket and scrolled through something. His jaw tightened. Then he looked at me with an expression I couldn't read.

"I was at a gala in D.C. last month," he said quietly. "Military families event. Lot of brass. Lot of... formal occasions."

He turned the phone toward me.

The photo filled the screen. Jonathan in his dress uniform. The one he called his finest. He stood beside a woman in a white dress. She was beautiful. Dark hair swept up. One hand resting on a rounded belly. The other holding a bouquet of white roses.

Behind them, a floral arch. White fabric draped in elegant swags.

Jonathan's arm was around her waist. He was smiling.

I stared at the image. My brain tried to make sense of it. Tried to find an explanation that didn't split my chest open.

The woman's dress wasn't a cocktail dress. It was a wedding gown.

Simple. Elegant. Expensive.

"That's Aylin Castillo," Theodore said. His voice was very quiet. "Widow of Sergeant Marcus Castillo. He died two years ago in theater."

I couldn't speak. Couldn't move.

"Jonathan told people it was a promise he made. To Marcus. Before he died." Theodore's knuckles were white around his phone. "That he'd take care of her. Marry her. Give the baby a father's name."

The parking lot was silent except for the hum of distant traffic.

"When?" My voice came out flat. Steady. I didn't recognize it.

"Fourteen months ago."

Fourteen months.

I thought about the last year. The dinners I'd cooked. The bills I'd paid. The nights I'd lain awake waiting for his calls. The way I'd held his mother's hand at her last doctor's appointment and promised her everything would be fine.

Fourteen months.

Theodore was watching me with something that looked like pain.

"I'm sorry," he said.

I handed him back his phone. My hand didn't shake.

"Thank you for telling me."

I got in my car. Started the engine. Drove home with the windows up and the air conditioning on high.

I didn't cry.

At home, I sat at the kitchen table. The house was quiet. Clean. I'd scrubbed the floors yesterday. Dusted the baseboards. Put fresh flowers in the vase on the counter.

I sat there for an hour. Maybe longer.

Then I stood up. Grabbed my keys. Drove to the federal recruitment office on the edge of town.

The woman behind the desk looked up when I walked in.

"I want to apply for the New Mexico research support program," I said.

She blinked. "That's... it's pretty remote. High desert. Not a lot of—"

"I know. I want to apply."

She slid the paperwork across the desk.

I filled it out. Signed my name at the bottom. Handed it back.

"We'll be in touch," she said.

At home, I opened my laptop. Downloaded a divorce petition template. Filled in every blank in my careful handwriting. Printed two copies. Signed both.

I folded them and tucked them beneath the spare linens in my dresser drawer.

Then I went downstairs and started dinner.

My phone rang while I was chopping onions.

Jonathan. His voice was bright. Happy.

"Hey, babe. Good news. I got leave approved. I'll be home in three days."

"That's great," I said.

"I'm bringing a guest. A war widow I've been helping out. Aylin. She's... it's complicated, but she needs support right now. Family stuff. I told her she could stay with us for a few days."

I set down the knife.

"Of course," I said. "I'll make up the guest room."

"You're the best." He sounded relieved. "Maybe cook something nice? She's been through a lot."

"Sure."

"Love you, Em."

I hung up.

Stood in the kitchen. Looked at the onions on the cutting board. The pot on the stove. The dish towel folded by the sink.

I didn't move for a long time.

The next morning, my phone rang again. Mrs. Perkins.

"Emberly, sweetheart. Jonathan told me he's bringing a guest."

"Yes."

"I just want you to be patient. And understanding. Family sticks together in hard times."

I said nothing.

"Have you thought any more about starting a family?" Her voice was gentle. Warm. "It might be just the thing right now. A baby would bring so much joy."

I hung up.

Sat on the edge of the bed.

Stared at the dresser drawer where the divorce papers waited.

And understood, with absolute clarity, that she had known all along.
