Chapter 4

The call came at 9:47 a.m. on Monday.

Bonnie's name lit up my screen. I was sitting in her kitchen drinking cold coffee. I picked up.

"We got it," she said.

I set down the mug. "The freeze?"

"Every account. His personal checking. The joint accounts. Lumina Ventures' business financials. All flagged for judicial review. The judge signed the order twenty minutes ago."

I closed my eyes. Felt something settle in my chest.

"He's going to lose his mind," Bonnie continued. "Be ready."

"I'm ready."

She hung up.

I sat there for a moment. The kitchen was quiet. Sunlight came through the window in a clean square across the table. I could hear a dog barking somewhere outside.

My phone buzzed.

Caden.

I stared at his name. Let it ring twice. Three times. Then I answered.

"What the hell did you do?" His voice was raw. Loud. I could hear him pacing. The sharp rhythm of his shoes on hardwood. "My accounts are frozen. Frozen. Do you understand what that means?"

I didn't respond.

"I can't access anything," he continued. His voice cracked at the edges. "Not the business account. Not my personal account. Nothing. You've locked me out of my own money."

"Our money," I said quietly.

"This is insane. You're ruining everything. You have no idea what you've done."

I leaned back in my chair. Looked at the square of sunlight on the table.

"I know exactly what I've done," I said.

"Estella." His voice shifted. Lower now. Almost pleading. "This is going to hurt both of us. You realize that, right? If you keep pushing this, we both lose."

"I've already lost," I said. "Three years ago. I just didn't know it yet."

"That's not—" He stopped. Took a breath. "Look. We can fix this. Call your lawyer. Tell her to back off. We'll sit down. Work something out. Like adults."

I thought about my mother. Intubated. Gray-faced. The billing slip in my hand. The empty account balance.

"You should have thought about this," I said, "before you chose her over my mother's life."

I hung up.

My hand was steady. I set the phone on the table and finished my coffee.

---

I called Lilith on Tuesday.

Bonnie tried to talk me out of it.

"Let me handle her in court," she said. "You don't need to do this."

"I need to look her in the eye," I said.

Bonnie studied my face. Then she sighed. "Fine. But you're recording it. Non-negotiable."

I nodded.

She handed me a small device. Showed me how to clip it inside my jacket pocket. "Audio only. But it's legal in Washington as long as one party consents. That's you."

"Got it."

"And Stella?" She caught my arm. "Don't let her bait you. She's going to try."

"I know."

I texted Lilith from a number she wouldn't recognize. Suggested a café downtown. Neutral ground. Public. She agreed within ten minutes.

---

I arrived at 2:00 p.m.

Lilith was already there.

She sat at a corner table near the window. Tailored blazer. Cream-colored. Expensive. Her hair was pulled back in a low twist. A leather portfolio rested on the chair beside her. She looked up when I walked in. Her expression was composed. Calm. Slightly above the room.

I sat down across from her.

"Estella," she said. Her voice was smooth. Professional. "Thank you for meeting me."

I didn't respond.

She opened the portfolio. Pulled out a folded piece of paper. Slid it across the table.

I looked down.

A check. Certified. $100,000.

"A goodwill gesture," Lilith said. "To put this behind us. Clean and quiet."

I stared at the number. The careful, printed zeros.

"You're offering me a hundred thousand dollars," I said.

"To resolve this amicably," she said. "Without dragging everyone through court. It's a fair offer."

I picked up the check. Held it between my fingers.

"You took six hundred and forty thousand dollars from my marriage," I said quietly.

Lilith's expression didn't change. But something tightened around her eyes.

"That was a business transaction," she said. "Between Caden and Lumina Ventures. You weren't a party to it."

"I was married to him."

"That doesn't make his investments your concern."

I looked at her. At the polished composure. The neutral blazer. The leather portfolio. The woman who had taken everything and called it business.

"My mother almost died on a hospital gurney," I said. "Because of where that money went. Because Caden chose your failing company over her life."

Lilith blinked. Just once. A flicker.

"I'm sorry about your mother," she said. Her tone was careful. Measured. "But that's not my responsibility."

I set the check on the table. Pushed it back toward her.

"Every cent will be accounted for in court," I said. "Every single one."

I stood up. Picked up my coffee cup. Looked down at her.

"You should have said no," I said. "When he offered you my money. You should have said no."

I turned and walked out.

Behind me, Lilith sat alone at the table. The check was still in front of her. She didn't move. She didn't call after me.

She just sat there.

I pushed through the café doors into the cold afternoon air. My hands were steady. My chest felt light.

I pulled out my phone. Texted Bonnie.

*Got it. All recorded.*

Her response came immediately.

*Good. Now we bury them both.*

Midas Protocol: Seducing My Rival's Wife Novel Cover

I sat in the freezing conference room, my knuckles white as I strangled a cheap plastic pen. Outside, Manhattan was weeping in the gray rain, but inside, the air was sterile and dead. I stared at the polished mahogany table, seeing the distorted reflection of a man who hadn't slept in forty-eight hours—a man about to sign his own divorce papers. Across from me, my wife Linda wouldn't even look at me. She was too busy drumming her fingers near a diamond ring that cost more than I had made in the last five years combined. Then the door swung open, and Simon Thorne walked in. The billionaire heir didn't say a word; he just walked behind Linda and placed a heavy, possessive hand on her shoulder, marking her as his. "Let's wrap this up," Simon said, checking his Patek Philippe with the bored tone of a man ordering a coffee he didn't want. Linda finally looked through me like I was a ghost and told me to stop dragging this out. She whispered that I couldn't even afford myself anymore, a physical punch to the gut given I’d lost my job three weeks ago. After I signed, Simon flicked a business card at me, mockingly offering me a job as a doorman for minimum wage. I walked out into the downpour, shivering in a suit I couldn't afford to dry clean. My phone vibrated with a text from my landlord: "Pack your things. Keys by tonight or I’m calling the cops." I stood on the corner of 5th Avenue with exactly $42.18 to my name, watching Simon kiss my wife through the glass wall of the penthouse. I was thirty, homeless, and drowning in a city of lions. I wanted to roar until my throat bled, but I just stood there, a drowned rat in a world of predators. How could I have lost everything so fast? Why was the woman who promised to stay through "for poorer" now leaning into the arms of the man who just humiliated me? Suddenly, my phone screen exploded with a blinding golden light. An app called the Midas Protocol installed itself, declaring poverty a disease and itself the cure. With one tap, a million dollars bypassed a federal hold and hit my account, and a "Nemesis Card" appeared in my digital inventory. I didn't hesitate. I typed Simon Thorne’s name into the vengeance algorithm and hit execute. The game had officially changed.
