Chapter 3

The hospital room smelled like antiseptic and the faint lavender of the lotion I'd brought last week. Adele was propped against three pillows, her frame smaller than I remembered, the IV line taped to her wrist with the careful precision of a nurse who'd done it a thousand times. The television murmured softly in the corner—some cooking show she wasn't watching.

I stood in the doorway for a moment before she noticed me. When she did, her face softened in that particular way mothers reserve for daughters they're worried about but won't interrogate.

"Come here," she said.

I crossed the room and sat in the chair I'd occupied every evening for the past three weeks. She reached for my hand. Her fingers were cold, her grip weaker than it had been last month. I held on carefully, aware of every fragile bone.

"You look tired," she said.

I almost laughed. "Thirty-six hour shift. It's fine."

"Chelsea."

The way she said my name made me stop. I met her eyes. She was studying my face with the unhurried perception of a woman who had watched me absorb difficulty my entire life—scraped knees, failed tests, broken friendships, the father who left. She'd seen me endure all of it with the same quiet competence I was performing now.

"Talk to me," she said.

I opened my mouth. Closed it. The words wouldn't come. How could I tell her that the man I'd married had been sleeping with my intern? That the girl whose tuition I'd paid was carrying his child? That they'd sat across from me in a conference room this morning and tried to have me declared mentally unfit?

How could I tell her any of it when her cancer treatments were paid for by Logan's family insurance network?

Adele's hand tightened on mine. "Whatever it is," she said quietly, "you don't have to carry it alone."

I looked down at our joined hands. Hers so small now. Mine still steady from years of surgical training. "I know," I whispered.

She reached up with her other hand and cupped my face, turning me to look at her. Her palm was warm against my cheek. She searched my expression the way I'd learned to read vital signs—looking for the thing I wasn't saying.

"Whatever you decide," she said finally, "make sure it's yours."

I nodded because I couldn't speak.

She didn't ask me to fight. She didn't ask me to forgive. She just held my face between her hands for a long moment, then let me go and settled back against the pillows.

We sat in silence while the cooking show played. Someone was making risotto. The chef explained the importance of patience, of adding the broth slowly, of not rushing the process. Adele's eyes drifted closed. Her breathing evened out.

I stayed until I was sure she was asleep. Then I kissed her forehead, adjusted her blanket, and left.

The parking garage was nearly empty. My car sat under a flickering fluorescent light in the spot I'd claimed weeks ago. I got in, locked the doors, and sat there staring at the concrete pillar in front of me.

My phone sat dark and silent in the cup holder.

I picked it up. Stared at the blank screen. Put it down.

Then I opened my laptop.

The document I created was untitled. I typed the date at the top, then paused. My fingers hovered over the keys. What was I documenting? Evidence for what?

I started typing.

*Meeting with hospital board, 10 AM. Present: Logan Simmons, Fallon Diaz, two administrators (names: Dr. Raymond Holt, Susan Castellano), Simmons family attorney (name: Patrick Mercer). Presented with document demanding public retraction, written apology, psychiatric evaluation within 48 hours. Alternative: involuntary commitment proceedings.*

I saved the file. Encrypted it. Backed it up to three separate locations.

Then I sat in the car for another hour, watching the garage slowly empty as the evening shift arrived.

The next morning, I made two phone calls.

The first attorney's office was in a building downtown I'd never noticed before. I paid cash for the consultation. The lawyer was a woman in her fifties with sharp eyes and a firmer handshake than mine. She listened without interrupting while I explained the situation. When I finished, she leaned back in her chair.

"How is your mother's treatment funded?" she asked.

I told her.

She nodded slowly. "Then you have a problem. If you file now, he can terminate her coverage immediately. The Simmons network isn't obligated to continue benefits for a separated spouse's dependents. It's discretionary."

"How long does she have?" I asked.

The lawyer's expression softened slightly. "In treatment?"

"Until it would be safe to file."

She didn't answer right away. "That's a medical question, Dr. Reed. But legally? You're looking at maintaining the status quo until her coverage is no longer dependent on your marital status. That could mean months. Maybe longer."

I thanked her and left.

The second attorney told me the same thing in different words.

I drove home in silence. Parked in the garage. Sat in my car for forty minutes, staring at nothing.

Then I went upstairs, opened my laptop, and added both consultations to the file.

The document was growing. Evidence. Assessments. Timelines.

I saved it. Backed it up again.

Then I closed the laptop and sat in the dark, waiting for something I couldn't name.
