Chapter 4

The morning of the signing ceremony, Karina wore red.

I know because Sophia's assistant was in the coffee shop across from the Hansen Group offices and texted me a photo at 8:47 a.m. Karina standing at the reception desk, red blazer, red lips, a leather portfolio tucked under her arm like a weapon she didn't know how to use. Cal was behind her, charcoal suit, hair combed back, looking like every inch the heir his parents raised him to be.

I set my phone face-down on the studio table and finished my coffee.

I'd been up since five. Not from nerves. I just didn't want to sleep through the morning I'd been building toward for three weeks. I showered, dried my hair, and put on the black dress. Sleeveless. Clean lines. Nothing that asked for attention. I clipped my grandmother's jade ring onto my left hand, the way I had every morning since I left the brownstone, and stood in front of the mirror for exactly thirty seconds.

Then I picked up the black portfolio by the door and walked out.

---

The hotel was on 58th, one of those buildings that made you feel underdressed just looking at the lobby. Marble floors. Orchids on every surface. A doorman who nodded like he recognized money and was deciding whether I qualified.

I qualified.

I checked my phone in the elevator. Sophia had texted: *Certificates confirmed valid. You're airtight. Go.*

I put the phone in my bag.

Down the hall, behind a set of double doors, I could hear the low hum of a room full of people who thought they knew how this afternoon ended.

---

Maximilian Graham had been in the private suite since ten.

I didn't know that then. I learned it later — that he'd reviewed the term sheets twice, asked two questions his legal team couldn't answer to his satisfaction, and almost called the whole thing off before his counsel talked him back from the ledge. Fifty million dollars. Routine, by his standards. He'd closed bigger deals before lunch.

He took his seat at the head investor table at 1:58 p.m. and watched the Hansens arrange themselves at the front of the room with the ease of people who had never once been told no by anyone who mattered.

I was already in the hallway.

---

The rear doors were unlocked. I'd confirmed that with the hotel's event coordinator three days ago, posing as a Hansen Group assistant with a question about AV setup. She'd been helpful. People usually were when you asked the right questions in the right tone.

I waited until I heard Cal's voice through the doors — that smooth, practiced cadence he used when he needed a room to believe him.

*"—the true differentiator of our brand has always been the proprietary recipe portfolio, a collection developed over three generations of the Hansen family—"

I pushed open the doors and walked in.

The room turned.

It happened the way things happen when something unexpected enters a space that was supposed to be controlled — a ripple, then a stillness. Heads swiveled. Chairs shifted. Somewhere near the front, a teacup met its saucer with a sharp, small sound.

Cal froze at the podium.

His mouth stayed open around a word he didn't finish. His eyes found me and something moved across his face — not guilt, not yet. Just confusion. The confusion of a man who had never once considered the possibility that I would be here, doing this, dressed like that, walking toward him down the center aisle of a room full of the most important investors in Manhattan.

Richard Hansen half-rose from his chair. His hand gripped the table edge.

Eleanor sat perfectly still, but her composure had a hairline fracture in it now — something tight around her eyes, something that wasn't quite as certain as it had been thirty seconds ago.

Karina stood to Cal's left, her rehearsed smile still technically on her face, but wrong. The muscles held the shape while everything behind it collapsed.

I didn't look at any of them for long.

I walked slowly. There was no reason to hurry. The room was already mine — I could feel it in the quality of the silence, the way no one spoke, the way even the investors at the far table had set down their pens.

At the head investor table, one man hadn't moved at all.

He sat with his hands folded on the table, watching me come down the aisle with an expression I couldn't read yet — not surprise, exactly. More like recognition. Like a man who had just seen something he hadn't known he was looking for.

I didn't know his name then. I would soon.

I reached the front of the room and stopped. I set the black portfolio on the nearest table, opened it, and laid the patent certificates flat so the room could see the registration numbers, the effective dates, the name printed at the top of every single page.

Leah Parker.

Not Hansen. Parker.

I looked up at Cal.

"I believe," I said, my voice even and unhurried, "you were in the middle of something."
