Chapter 2

The next morning, I set up a folding table in the guest room Cal never used. I laid my grandmother's notebook open under a desk lamp and started photographing every page. Each one, front and back. I dated the file names by hand—year, month, day—even though the notebook itself was already forty years old, the ink faded to brown in places, the paper soft as cloth.

Then I pulled up the Hansen Group's website. Menu archives. Press releases going back a decade. I put them side by side with my grandmother's handwriting and started matching. Braised short ribs, star anise and soy—2019 menu, described as 'a Hansen original.' Her ginger scallion noodles—2021, 'inspired by Chef Eleanor's travels through Asia.' Eleanor had never been to Asia.

I built a spreadsheet. Dish name, notebook page, publication date, discrepancy. By the third day, I had thirty-one entries. I felt nothing while I worked. That surprised me. I thought rage would carry me through it. Instead it was just quiet, careful hands, the same hands my grandmother taught to fold dumplings without tearing the skin.

I couriered the whole package to Sophia on a Thursday. She called that night. "This is airtight," she said. "We're filing under Leah Parker. Not Hansen. Your maiden name protects you if they try to claim marital co-ownership later."

"Do it," I said.

At home, Cal didn't notice any of it. He came in late most nights, tie loosened, phone glued to his hand. Karina called during dinner more than once, and he'd just get up from the table mid-sentence and take it in the hallway, his voice dropping into that warm register he used to save for me.

One night he came home to find me at the kitchen table, a legal document spread in front of me, red pen in hand. He glanced at it the way you'd glance at a stack of mail.

"Bill?" he asked, already moving toward the liquor cabinet.

"Something like that."

He poured two fingers of scotch and disappeared into his study. He didn't ask again.

The summons to the brownstone came four days later, dressed up as an invitation. Eleanor's assistant called it a "family discussion." I knew what that meant before I walked in.

The study smelled like lemon polish and old money. Richard sat behind his desk like a judge. Eleanor perched on the settee, pouring tea into cups no one would drink. Cal stood by the window, phone in hand, thumb moving.

Richard slid a folder across the table. "We've had the lawyers draw this up. Clean and simple."

I opened it. A contract. One percent equity in the Hansen Group. In exchange, permanent and irrevocable assignment of all rights to the recipes—every dish, past and future, derived from my grandmother's notebook.

"One percent," I said.

"It's generous," Richard said. "More than generous, considering."

Eleanor set down the teapot with a soft clink. "Leah, dear, you should be grateful. Without the Hansen name behind it, your grandmother's cooking would have stayed exactly what it was—a nobody's home cooking. We gave it a stage. We gave it meaning."

Something in my chest went very still and very cold. "She fed a whole neighborhood for forty years. People lined up outside a folding table on Sundays."

"Charming," Eleanor said, in the tone she used for things she found neither charming nor important.

I looked at Cal. He was still on his phone, but he must have felt my eyes because he looked up, gave a small shrug, like he was bored by the whole thing.

"It's a fair deal, Leah," he said.

Four words. That was all he offered. Not you deserve better. Not let me look at this with you. Just it's fair, delivered like a man closing a meeting he'd rather skip.

I picked up the pen. It was heavy, engraved, probably worth more than my winter coat. I held it over the signature line long enough that Richard leaned forward, expecting it.

Then I set it down.

"I need a few days to review the language," I said.

Richard's jaw tightened. "There's nothing to review. It's standard—"

"Richard." Eleanor's voice cut in, smooth as the silk at her throat. She waved a hand like she was brushing away a fly. "Let her look it over. She'll see reason." She smiled at me, the kind of smile that assumed the outcome before the conversation had ended. "Take your time, dear. We know you'll do the right thing."

I closed the folder and stood. "Thank you for the tea."

Nobody answered. Cal had already gone back to his phone.

I walked out through the marble foyer, past the seating chart Eleanor still kept framed on the hallway table—the one that always put me at the far end, closest to the kitchen doors. I stepped outside onto the brownstone steps and let the door click shut behind me.

The air was cold and clean after the perfume of that room. I stood there a moment, folder tucked under my arm, and exhaled slowly, watching my breath fog in the streetlight.

I would never sign it.

I didn't need a few days to know that. I just needed a few days to make sure that when I said no, there would be nothing left for them to take instead.
