Chapter 2

The first time I saw Braelyn Gardner, she was draped across Nolan's arm like a designer accessory, her red lips curved in a smile that never quite reached her eyes. It was two weeks after our courthouse wedding, and I was polishing the marble countertops when they swept into the penthouse like a hurricane of expensive perfume and entitlement.

'Oh my God, Lan, this place is divine!' Braelyn's voice carried the artificial sweetness of someone who'd learned to perform for an audience. She spun around the living room, her stiletto heels clicking against the floor I'd just mopped. 'The views alone must be, what, eight million?'

Nolan's hand rested possessively on her waist. He didn't look at me as I shrank against the kitchen doorway, my cleaning cloth clutched in trembling fingers. This was calculated—bringing her here, now, while I was working.

'Ten,' Nolan replied, his voice warm in a way I hadn't heard since college. 'But worth every penny when you have the right person to share it with.'

Braelyn giggled and pressed herself closer to him. 'Speaking of divine, you have to see the necklace Lan got me for the charity gala. Ten million in blue diamonds—they're so rare, you can barely find them in nature. It's like wearing the ocean around your neck.'

I kept my eyes down, focusing on the veins in the marble floor. Ten million dollars. The number hit me like a physical blow. That was the price of my father's debt, the reason I'd sacrificed everything. And now it hung around this woman's neck like a trophy.

'Darling, what do you think of the decor?' Braelyn called out, finally acknowledging my presence. 'Lan has such... unique taste, doesn't he?'

Nolan's laugh was sharp as broken glass. 'The penthouse came furnished. I haven't had time to fix Lainey's... artistic choices.'

They moved toward the fireplace, and my breath caught in my throat. The ceramic vase—the one I'd made for Nolan's twentieth birthday in that little pottery studio near campus—sat on the mantel. I'd placed it there yesterday, hoping he might notice, might remember. It was all I had left of our past, painted with clumsy brushstrokes and fired in an uneven kiln, but it had been made with love.

Nolan's arm swept across the mantel as he gestured toward the city skyline beyond the windows. I watched in slow motion as his sleeve caught the edge of the vase. The sound of it hitting the marble floor was like the world breaking.

Shards scattered across the polished surface, glinting like fallen stars. Blue and green ceramic fragments—pieces of the ocean scene I'd painted for him because he'd once said he wanted to live by the sea.

'Oh my God, that was ugly,' Braelyn laughed, stepping carefully around the broken pieces. 'You should get a proper decorator, Lan. This place has so much potential.'

Nolan didn't even look down. His eyes remained fixed on the skyline, as if the destruction at his feet was meaningless. 'I'll have it cleaned up,' he said flatly.

They left for dinner at Le Bernardin, Braelyn's arm looped through Nolan's as they stepped into the waiting elevator. The doors closed on her final words: 'We'll be late. Don't wait up.'

I stood motionless until I heard the car pull away from the building. Then I dropped to my knees and began collecting the shards, my hands trembling as I gathered each broken piece. A small drop of blood fell onto a blue fragment—I'd cut my palm on a jagged edge—but I didn't stop.

In my tiny utility room, I spread the pieces on the metal table under the bare lightbulb. The vase was beyond repair, the cracks too deep, too numerous. But I began gluing it together anyway, my fingers sticky with blood and ceramic dust.

This was the third time I'd broken something precious beyond repair and tried to fix it. First my heart, then Nolan's love, and now this vase. Each time, the cracks remained visible, a permanent reminder of what had been shattered.

Two months into our marriage, Nolan called me into his study. The room smelled of leather and power, the kind of space where men made decisions that changed lives.

'Lainey,' he said, not looking up from his computer, 'we need to discuss the terms of our marriage.'

I stood before his desk, hands clasped to hide their trembling. 'What terms?'

'Heirs,' he replied, the word falling between us like a stone. 'Andrews Capital needs a legacy. Dr. Webb will see you tomorrow at ten.'

Dr. Marcus Webb's office was sterile and bright, the kind of place where hope went to die. He spoke in clinical terms about ovarian stimulation and embryo transfer, his eyes never quite meeting mine.

'The procedure has a high success rate,' he assured me, though something in his tone suggested otherwise. 'Mr. Andrews has requested the most aggressive protocol.'

I nodded, not understanding that this was another weapon in Nolan's arsenal. That he'd known for years he was infertile. That every injection, every blood draw, every failed cycle was designed to break me piece by piece, just like the vase I was still trying to glue back together in the darkness of my servant's room.
