Chapter 1

The notification buzzes at 9:47 p.m. I'm standing at the kitchen counter with lukewarm coffee in one hand and Evander's phone in the other. I only picked it up to silence it. That's what I tell myself later, when the lies I tell myself still matter.

The screen lights up. A text from Waverly Ortiz.

*"Missing you already. Tonight was perfect."*

I don't unlock it. Not yet. I set down my coffee. The mug makes a soft sound against marble. I stare at the screen until it goes dark, then I press the button and watch it wake again. The notification is still there. So is the one above it. And the one above that.

I swipe up. No passcode. Evander stopped locking his phone around me six months ago. He said it was trust. I thought it was love.

The messages load. Weeks of them. I scroll up and the thread goes back further. A month. Two months. I stop counting.

*"You're the only part of this day I don't dread."* That one is from 2:13 a.m. last Thursday. I was asleep in our bed. Or I thought I was in our bed. Maybe he was on the couch. Maybe he was somewhere else.

*"I can't stop thinking about your laugh."*

*"She doesn't understand me the way you do."*

*"I wish I'd met you first."*

I read every single one. I don't sit down. I don't cry. I stand in the kitchen under the recessed lighting Evander had installed last year because he said the old fixtures made the space feel cheap. The new lights are very bright. They show everything.

My coffee goes cold.

Evander comes home at 12:40 a.m. I hear his key in the lock, his shoes on the hardwood, the soft thud of his briefcase against the entryway table. He walks into the kitchen and stops when he sees me still standing there.

"You're up," he says.

I place his phone on the table between us. Screen up. The thread is still open. Waverly's name is right there in sans-serif font, white text on blue.

He looks at it. Then at me. His face doesn't change.

"I want a separation," I say.

My voice comes out steady. I'm surprised by that. I thought it would shake. I thought I would feel something sharp and hot, something that would crack me open. But I just feel tired. So tired my bones ache.

Evander picks up his phone. He scrolls through the thread. He's not reading it. He's deciding what to say. I know him well enough to see the difference.

"No," he says finally.

I blink. "What?"

"No." He sets the phone down, screen-side down this time, like that erases it. "You don't get to do this."

"Evander—"

"You put a bullet fragment in your own chest for me." His voice is cold. Boardroom cold. The voice he uses with investors who ask for too much. "You don't get to just quit."

I stare at him. The kitchen is so bright. I can see every line in his face, every thread in his shirt, every single thing I used to love about him.

"I'm not quitting," I say quietly. "I'm asking to leave."

"Same thing."

"It's not."

"You stay," he says, "until I decide the debt is paid."

The air goes out of the room. Or maybe out of me. I don't know anymore.

He picks up his briefcase. He walks past me toward the bedroom. He stops in the doorway and looks back.

"I have an eight a.m. meeting," he says. "Don't wait up."

Then he's gone.

I stand there for a long time. Eventually, I pour my cold coffee down the sink and rinse the mug. I turn off the lights. I walk to the guest room and close the door.

I don't sleep.

In the morning, Evander is already dressed when I come into the kitchen. Charcoal suit. Silver cufflinks. He's pouring himself coffee from the French press like nothing happened. Like last night was a board meeting that didn't go his way and now we move on to next quarter.

I sit at the table. I open my medication organizer. Seven compartments, one for each day, color-coded by my cardiologist Dr. Mercer because I kept mixing them up after the surgery. Blue for Monday. Green for Tuesday. Today is Wednesday. Yellow.

I take the pills one by one. Beta-blocker. ACE inhibitor. Anticoagulant. Baby aspirin. I swallow them with water and feel them go down like small stones.

I pick up the nitroglycerin bottle. The label says *Refill by 03/18*. Three days from now. I set it down carefully.

Evander drains his coffee. He doesn't look at me.

"I'll be late tonight," he says. "Dinner with clients."

I nod.

He leaves. The door clicks shut behind him. The apartment is very quiet.

I sit at the table and count the pills left in the organizer. Thursday. Friday. Saturday. Sunday. Monday. Tuesday. Wednesday.

I don't know yet how to leave a locked room. But I make a note of the refill date.

For now, I stay.
