Chapter 3

The morning after, I asked three times what was in my IV.

The first time, the floor nurse said she'd check with pharmacy. She didn't come back.

The second time, a resident appeared with a clipboard and told me the medication log showed standard antibiotics and a saline drip. He read it off without looking at me. His pen was already moving to the next line before he finished the sentence.

The third time, Victor Hale walked in himself.

That told me everything.

He was a small man who wore expensive suits to compensate. He stood at the foot of my bed with his hands clasped and his face arranged into something that was supposed to look like concern.

'Dr. Crawford.' His voice was the institutional version of warm. 'I understand you've had a deeply traumatic forty-eight hours.'

'What was in the syringe?' I said.

'Our pharmacy team has conducted a full review of your treatment record.' He set a printed sheet on my blanket. 'Everything administered was standard and appropriate given your condition.'

I didn't touch the paper. 'That's not what I asked.'

'The review is complete.' He picked up the sheet and tucked it back under his arm. 'We're all very sorry for your loss, Annalise. If you need grief counseling resources, I can have someone—'

'Get out of my room.'

He left. The door made that same soft click.

I lay there and stared at the ceiling and understood that by morning the record would say whatever Dante needed it to say.

---

I went to his office the next afternoon.

I shouldn't have. I knew that. My ribs were still taped, my eye still bruised yellow-green at the edges, and I was running on four hours of broken sleep and something that had curdled past grief into a kind of white-hot static. I should have gone home. I should have called Kade.

Instead I stood in front of Dante's desk and told him what Scarlet had done.

All of it. The syringe. The label that said amoxicillin but wasn't. The cramps. The blood. The text message with the name Lily already picked out like a trophy.

He listened.

That was the worst part. He actually listened, his chair angled slightly toward me, his expression composed and attentive. The way you look when someone is explaining a flight delay. Mildly inconvenient. Ultimately not your problem.

When I finished, the room was quiet.

'The miscarriage,' he said carefully, 'was a tragic but natural complication. Given the severity of the assault you sustained—'

'Don't.' My voice cracked on the word. Just the one word.

'—the attending physician's notes are consistent with—'

'Dante.' I pressed both hands flat on his desk and leaned forward. 'She killed our baby. She put something in my IV and she killed our baby and you are reading from a script that Victor Hale handed you this morning.'

Something moved behind his eyes. I watched for it. I was still watching for it, even then—still scanning his face for the man who used to press his forehead against mine in the dark and say her name like a prayer. Lily. We'd chosen it years ago, half-joking over takeout containers, and then not joking at all.

The something passed. His expression settled back.

'You've been through an enormous trauma,' he said. 'You're not thinking clearly.'

His phone lit up on the desk between us.

He glanced at it.

I straightened.

He picked it up.

'I need to take this,' he said, already turning toward the window.

I was still standing there. He had already moved on.

I walked out. I don't remember closing the door.

---

Elena found me in the stairwell on the third floor.

I wasn't crying. I want to be clear about that. I was sitting on the concrete step with my back against the wall and my hands in my lap, and I was completely still, the way you go still when the body decides it has nothing left to spend.

She sat down beside me without asking. She didn't say anything for a long moment.

'I pulled your IV bag from the disposal cart last night,' she said finally. 'Before housekeeping came through.' Her voice was low, careful. 'And the sharps bin in 312. There was a syringe.'

I turned to look at her.

'I photographed everything.' She held my gaze. 'The bag. The syringe. Your original encrypted intake note before the system update this morning.' A pause. 'I have copies.'

The fluorescent light above us buzzed and flickered.

'Elena—'

'Don't thank me.' She stood, smoothing her scrubs. 'Just—' She stopped. Looked at the floor. 'Just don't let them make you think you imagined it.'

She went back through the door.

I sat in the stairwell alone and pressed one hand against my abdomen, against the place that was now just absence, and I thought about the word natural.

Natural complication.

Somewhere in the building, Dante was finishing his phone call. Somewhere, Victor Hale was filing his review. Somewhere, Scarlet Lynch was walking the halls in her pressed scrubs with a senior badge that Dante's money had bought.

And in a cold stairwell on the third floor, Elena Vasquez had just handed me the only real thing I had.

I held onto it.
