My Husband Left Me to Die for His Mistress
Chapter 5
She came through the doors like a bride at the wrong wedding.
White dress. White heels. Hair loose down her back. The chapel doors swung shut behind her with a soft thud that echoed in the silence.
I felt every head turn. Heard the intake of breath ripple through the pews like wind through grass.
Avianna James walked down the center aisle. Slow. Unhurried. Her heels clicked on the marble. One step. Two. Three.
She didn't look at anyone else. She looked at me.
I sat in the wheelchair at the front of the chapel, my hands folded in my lap, the bandages hidden beneath the long black dress. The casket was ten feet away. Closed. Polished wood. White lilies on top.
Cassius's hand tightened on my shoulder. I felt his fingers dig in.
"Avianna." His voice was low. Controlled. "Not now."
She stopped in front of us. Smiled.
"Not now?" She tilted her head. "When, then? When is the right time to tell her the truth?"
The chapel was absolutely silent. Two hundred people holding their breath.
She turned to me. Her eyes were bright. Clear. She looked like someone about to do a good deed.
"I'm so sorry for your loss, Elise," she said. Her voice carried. Sweet. Sympathetic. "Your father was a good man. He didn't deserve what happened to him."
I couldn't move. Couldn't speak. My hands were locked together in my lap.
"That car accident," Avianna said. "The one that took your leg. It wasn't an accident."
Somewhere behind me, someone gasped.
"Cassius was on the phone with me that day." She smiled wider. "I'd sent him pictures. Intimate ones. From the hotel suite I'd booked that same weekend. I told him I'd leak them if he didn't leave you. He panicked."
She paused. Let the silence stretch.
"He wasn't watching the road," she said softly. "He was thinking about me when he ruined you."
The room tilted.
I tried to breathe. Couldn't. My chest was too tight. My hands were shaking.
Cassius's fingers dug harder into my shoulder. "She's lying," he said. His voice cracked. "Elise, she's—"
"Am I?" Avianna pulled out her phone. Held it up. "I have the texts. The timestamps. The hotel receipt. All of it."
She looked at me. Her smile was gentle. Kind.
"He destroyed you for me," she said. "And then he married you anyway. Isn't that romantic?"
Something inside me broke.
Not my heart. That had broken a long time ago.
Something deeper. Older. The last small piece of me that had been holding on.
I felt it snap.
And then I felt the warmth.
Spreading. Wet. Soaking through the dress.
I looked down.
Blood. Dark and red. Pooling in my lap.
"Elise—" Cassius's voice was far away.
I tried to stand. The wheelchair rolled backward. My hands slipped off the armrests.
The floor came up fast.
I hit the marble hard. Pain exploded through my hip. Through the bandaged stump. Through everything.
The blood kept coming. I felt it spreading beneath me. Warm. Sticky.
Someone was screaming.
Cassius dropped to his knees beside me. His hands reached for me. White. Shaking.
"Don't touch her." A woman's voice. One of my father's colleagues. "Don't you dare touch her."
Cassius's hands hovered in the air. Useless. Empty.
I turned my head. Saw the casket. Saw the lilies.
*I'm sorry, Dad,* I thought. *I'm so sorry.*
The chapel doors opened.
Footsteps. Fast. Heavy. Purposeful.
I couldn't lift my head. Couldn't see.
But I heard his voice.
"Move."
One word. Quiet. Absolute.
Cassius scrambled backward.
Marcelo Castro knelt beside me. His face came into focus above mine. Dark eyes. Steady. Calm.
"I've got you," he said.
He slid one arm under my shoulders. One under my knees. Lifted me like I weighed nothing.
I tried to speak. Couldn't. My vision was graying at the edges.
"Stay with me," Marcelo said. His voice was low. Close. "Just stay with me, Elise."
He stood. Turned. Walked toward the doors.
Behind him, men in dark suits moved into formation. A wall. Blocking Cassius. Blocking everyone.
"You can't—" Cassius's voice. Desperate. Breaking. "That's my wife—"
Marcelo didn't stop. Didn't look back.
"No," he said quietly. "She's not."
The chapel doors swung open. Cold air rushed in.
I turned my head against Marcelo's chest. Saw the faces in the pews. Shocked. Silent. Watching.
I saw Avianna. Still standing at the front. Still smiling.
I closed my eyes.
The last thing I heard was the sound of the car door closing. The engine starting. The world disappearing behind tinted glass.
And then nothing.
