My Husband Killed Our Son for His Mistress

The chamomile tea was ready, honey stirred in just how Evan liked it, when his wife rolled her chair down the penthouse hallway. Through the cracked study door came his laugh — cold, dry, wrong. "She had it coming, Marcus," he said into the phone. In that instant, her billionaire husband's confession shattered everything: their son was dead by his hand, and his mistress was the reason. Chapter 3

Brendan stepped into my ICU room just after three in the morning.

His coat was dark and damp from the New York rain. He looked tired, but his eyes were wide and fierce. When he saw my broken arm in its thick plaster, the gauze taped across my forehead, and the bruised skin along my jaw, he stopped dead in his tracks.

His jaw worked. His hands balled into tight fists inside his pockets.

"Sierra," he whispered.

"I'm here," I said.

My voice was barely a scratch, but it was steady. The morphine was a dull buzz in my blood, but my mind had never been clearer.

He walked over to the bed and touched my good shoulder. His fingers were shaking. This was the man who had built a billion-dollar empire out of an empty garage, yet right now, he looked ready to break.

"Evan is sleeping at the hotel across the street," Brendan said, keeping his voice low. "He posted two private guards downstairs by the main lobby. He thinks he owns this whole floor."

"He doesn't," I said.

"No," Brendan agreed coldly. "He doesn't."

He pulled a chair close to the mattress. We spoke in quick, hushed whispers between the slow beats of the heart monitor.

"The head of trauma is an old friend of mine," Brendan explained. "He adjusted your chart. In three days, your internal bleeding will stabilize enough for high altitude. That’s our window. I have a specialized medical jet waiting on the tarmac at Teterboro. When the shift changes at midnight on Thursday, my team will move you under a fake name. Claire Stone. No press. No paper trail."

"And the legal end?" I asked.

Brendan took a slim manila folder from his leather bag. Inside were crisp sheets of white paper.

"Diane Chen drew them up yesterday," he said. "Standard, uncontested divorce. You waive all claims to the Foster estate. You take nothing from him."

"Good," I said. "I don't want a single cent of his dirty money."

I took the pen with my left hand. It was awkward, but I pressed down hard, writing my name on the bottom line. *Sierra Coleman.* Not Foster. Never Foster again.

Then I reached under my pillow. My fingers found the small silver USB drive. It felt cool and heavy against my palm. On it were the audio files: the phone call where Evan admitted to hiring Liam's kidnappers, and the recording of Priscilla at Liam’s grave.

I handed it to Brendan.

"Leave this on his desk," I said. "Next to the papers."

Brendan took the drive, his thumb tracing the metal edge. "Do you want to write him a note? Tell him where you're going? Call him out for what he did?"

"No," I replied without hesitation.

"Nothing at all?"

"Nothing," I said. "Words give a man like Evan something to argue with. He will try to explain. He will try to justify it. Silence will drive him out of his mind."

Brendan looked at me for a long second, then gave a firm nod. "Understood."

Three days later, the rain turned into sleet.

The clock on the wall clicked past twelve midnight. The hallway outside went quiet.

Two paramedics in dark navy uniforms entered my room without making a sound. A nurse followed them, quietly disconnecting the monitors and setting the IV drip onto a portable stand. They didn't ask me any questions. They simply transferred me onto a narrow gurney and pulled a warm thermal blanket up to my chin.

We took the service elevator down to the basement loading dock.

The cold night air hit my face like a slap. It smelled of wet asphalt, exhaust fumes, and freedom.

They slid my stretcher into the back of an unmarked black ambulance. Brendan was already inside, sitting on the bench with his phone glowing in the dark. The doors slammed shut. The engine roared, and we pulled away from the hospital curb without using sirens.

We drove through the wet streets, crossing into New Jersey toward Teterboro Airport.

Behind us, in the Manhattan penthouse, the rooms were already dead.

Earlier that afternoon, Brendan’s private team had slipped in while Evan was at an emergency board meeting. They didn't smash anything. They didn't cause a scene. They simply packed away every single trace of my existence.

My closet was completely empty. The bathroom counters were bare. My ballet scrapbooks, my clothes, my toiletries—everything was gone. The scent of my lavender lotion was already fading from the sheets, replaced by the sterile smell of air conditioning.

The only things left were on Evan's polished mahogany desk.

Right in the center, directly under the reading lamp, sat two objects.

The signed divorce papers.

And the small silver USB drive.

At Teterboro, the private jet sat waiting under the glowing floodlights.

The paramedics wheeled me up the ramp and secured me into the wide medical berth in the cabin. The leather seats were soft. The cabin was warm and quiet.

Brendan sat across from me and buckled his seatbelt. "Next stop, Seattle. You're going to a private rehab suite on the bay. The surgeon is already waiting for your scans."

I looked out the small oval window. Below us, the lights of New York blurred into long streaks of gold and red as the plane accelerated down the runway.

Then the wheels lifted.

The city dropped away into the dark clouds beneath our wings.

I leaned my head back against the pillow. My ribs throbbed, and my broken arm ached under the cast. But for the first time in four years, I could finally breathe.
