Chapter 2

Three days after Liam tore up the divorce papers, my phone buzzed on the nightstand.

It was a text from an unknown number.

*Café Madeleine on 74th. Two o'clock. Just us. Woman to woman.*

I didn’t need to ask who it was. Ariyah Shaw had never learned how to be subtle.

I stared at the screen for a long time. I knew going was a risk. Liam had eyes everywhere, and his warning from the restaurant still rang in my ears. But I also knew I had no cards left to play. If I wanted to find a way out, I needed information.

I arrived twenty minutes early. The café was warm and smelled of roasted coffee beans and butter. I picked a small marble table in the far corner. From there, I could watch the glass double doors and anyone walking down the street.

At two on the dot, Ariyah pushed the door open.

She wore a cream cashmere coat and oversized sunglasses. Her left hand rested casually over her stomach, drawing attention to the slight swell beneath her knit dress. She looked confident. She carried herself like a woman who had already won the crown and was just waiting for the coronation.

She spotted me and walked over. She pulled out the wrought-iron chair opposite mine and sat down.

"I'm surprised you came," she said. Her voice was light, almost sweet.

"You asked," I replied evenly. "What do you want, Ariyah?"

"No small talk? Good." She set her crocodile leather purse on the table. She pulled out an iPhone and laid it between our cups. "I think you and I want the same thing, Elia. You want out of this marriage, and I want Liam. The difference is, you think Liam will let you go if you ask nicely. He won’t."

I looked down at the black screen of her phone. "And you have a solution?"

"I have the truth," she said.

She tapped the screen and hit play.

A sharp hiss of static filled the space between us, followed by the clinking of heavy crystal glasses and men’s laughter. It was a private poker game. Then a familiar voice cut through the noise.

Liam.

His voice was thick with expensive scotch, loose and boastful.

"Reed Capital was dead the moment I wanted it dead," Liam’s voice said through the speaker. A low chuckle rumbled in his chest. "A couple of short positions, three leaked audit reports to the SEC, and the whole house of cards caved in. Her father had a heart attack trying to fix it. And Elia? She thought I was her savior. She fell right into my hands."

A man in the recording laughed. "And the mother? Miranda?"

"Miranda is right where she belongs," Liam answered, sounding amused. "Whitfield’s head doctor takes twenty grand a month to keep her dosage cut in half. Without the full stabilizers, her mind stays scrambled. As long as Miranda is sick, Elia stays on her knees. She won’t ever walk away."

The air left my lungs all at once. The café around me seemed to blur, the chatter of other customers fading into complete silence.

Then came another voice on the tape. "What about the accident two years ago? The kid?"

Liam paused. The clink of ice against glass was loud and clear.

"The driver was paid fifty grand," Liam said softly, without a trace of remorse. "He did his job. A baby would've ruined everything. A child gives a woman a spine. It gives her a reason to stop needing me. Elia only needs one person in this world, and that’s me."

The recording clicked off.

Silence fell over the table.

My hands rested flat against the cool marble. In the past, my fingers would have rushed to my left ring finger, twisting the heavy diamond band until it bruised my knuckle. But today, my hands didn't move. They stayed completely still.

My heart didn't race. My blood felt like freezing water, thick and sluggish in my veins.

Six months.

I had carried that baby for six months. I remembered the blinding headlights, the screech of tires on Fifth Avenue, the agonizing pain, and the doctor shaking his head in the dark hospital room. I had wept for two years. I had blamed myself for crossing the street that day.

And Liam had held me while I cried. He had wiped my tears and whispered that we would get through it together.

Ariyah leaned across the table. Her eyes held a glossy, practiced sympathy.

"He's a monster, Elia," she whispered. "I'm carrying his child now, and I can handle him. But you can't. You deserve to be free. Take the recording. Pack your bags and leave quietly. Let the divorce happen without a fight. It's better for everyone."

She thought she was being clever. She thought she was breaking my heart so I would clear the way for her.

I looked into her face. For the first time in five years, I didn't feel fear. I didn't feel despair.

"Thank you, Ariyah," I said.

My voice was flat and perfectly steady. I didn't scream. I didn't shake.

I stood up from the table, leaving my untouched coffee behind. I didn't take the phone, and I didn't look back.

I walked out of the café and stepped onto the chilly sidewalk. The late afternoon wind swept down 74th Street, biting against my cheeks. I stopped by the curb and stood there for a full minute, watching the yellow cabs rush past.

I didn't cry.

Deep inside my chest, the last warm piece of me went completely dark. And in its place, something cold, sharp, and unbreakable locked into position.
