Chapter 1

The kitchen clock said 4:47 AM. I stood at the marble counter in Warren's penthouse, chopping shallots for a balsamic reduction. My eyes burned. Not from the shallots. I hadn't slept.

Warren had a client dinner tonight. Eight people. He told me yesterday morning while checking his phone. "Make it impressive," he said. He didn't look up.

I pulled the beef tenderloin from the fridge. My phone buzzed on the counter. A text from Seattle General Hospital.

My hand froze on the meat.

*Patient Claire Matthews condition deteriorated. Emergency surgery required. Cost: $30,000. Please contact billing immediately.*

I read it three times. The words didn't change.

Thirty thousand dollars.

I had been saving for eleven months. Every dollar I earned from the "household allowance" Zara gave me for cooking, cleaning, hosting Warren's dinners. I did the math in my head again. I was close. So close. Maybe $28,000 by now.

I could do this. I could save her.

I set the phone down and kept cooking.

---

At seven PM, the dining room glowed. Candles. White orchids. Crystal glasses catching the light. I wore a black dress Warren bought me two years ago. It still fit. I hadn't bought new clothes since.

The clients arrived. Warren shook hands, laughed, poured scotch. I smiled and brought out the first course. Seared scallops with citrus foam. One of the men complimented the plating. Warren nodded like he'd made it himself.

Zara sat at the far end of the table. She always did. She wore red tonight. Her hair was perfect. She sipped wine and watched me carry plates like I was part of the furniture.

I poured more wine. Laughed when someone made a joke about the stock market. Cleared plates. Brought out the beef. No one said thank you. They never did.

Warren caught my eye once. His face was blank. Then he turned back to his client and kept talking.

Zara's gaze followed me every time I entered the room. Quiet. Cataloguing.

I felt it on my neck like cold fingers.

---

The next morning, I walked into the bank at nine AM. I hadn't slept again. My hands shook as I filled out the withdrawal slip.

The teller typed something. Frowned. Typed again.

"Ma'am, your account shows a balance of $1,247."

I blinked. "That's wrong."

She turned the screen toward me. The number sat there. $1,247.

"There should be twenty-eight thousand," I said. My voice sounded far away.

"I'm sorry. That's what the system shows."

I walked out. My legs felt like water.

When I got back to the penthouse, Zara was in the living room with Warren. She had a folder open on the coffee table. Receipts spread out like evidence.

"Eliana," Warren said. He didn't stand. "Zara found some discrepancies in the household budget."

Zara looked up at me. Her face was calm. Sympathetic, even.

"The Baccarat crystal set," she said softly. "The one that broke last month. That was $4,200. And the grocery overages from hosting so many dinners. The dry cleaning bill for Warren's suit that got stained. It adds up."

She slid a paper across the table toward me. Numbers in neat columns. My name at the top.

"You owe the household $26,753," she said.

I stared at the paper. The words blurred.

"I didn't break any crystal," I whispered.

Warren's jaw tightened. "Zara handles the finances. If she says it's accurate, it's accurate."

Zara folded her hands. Said nothing.

I looked at Warren. My husband. The man who owed everything to my father.

"My mother needs surgery," I said. "Thirty thousand dollars. I've been saving for almost a year. That money was for her."

Warren picked up his phone. "Your mother is not my responsibility."

My chest felt like it was caving in. "Warren. Please."

"I have a meeting," he said. He stood and walked past me. Zara followed him.

I stood there alone in the living room. The folder still open on the table. My name at the top.

---

That evening, I called Warren. It rang four times.

"What," he said. Music in the background. Glasses clinking.

"Warren, please. It's thirty thousand. You spend that on wine. My mother is dying."

"I already told you. Not my problem."

"She's in Seattle. Alone. She needs—"

"Eliana." His voice was flat. Cold. "Your mother is not my responsibility. Stop calling me about this."

The line went dead.

I tried again. The call went straight to voicemail. He'd turned off his phone.

I sat on the kitchen floor. The tiles were cold. I pulled my knees to my chest.

I didn't cry. I couldn't.

---

Three days passed. I moved through the penthouse like a ghost. Cooked. Cleaned. Waited.

On the third morning, I stood in the kitchen at 6:12 AM. I was holding a spatula. I don't remember why.

My phone rang. Seattle area code.

I answered.

"Ms. Matthews?" A woman's voice. Tired. "This is Seattle General Hospital. I'm calling about your mother, Claire Matthews."

I gripped the counter.

"She passed away last night at 11:43 PM. I'm very sorry for your loss."

The spatula hit the floor.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

Something inside me caught fire.

And it didn't go out.
