Chapter 5

The second call happened at what I guessed was midnight, though time had stopped meaning anything in that warehouse. Derek held the phone to my face so I could watch the screen light up with the same 917 number, ringing, ringing, ringing into nothing.

Then the word BLOCKED.

He stared at it a long moment. Something in his jaw went tight. He turned to the man on the crate and I watched his mouth move, sharp and fast, though I only caught pieces. *Cheap bastard. Thinks we're playing.*

I wanted to tell them it wasn't a game to me either. I wanted to tell them I hadn't asked for any of this. But my mouth was too dry, and some animal part of me had already understood that talking wouldn't save me. Nothing would save me. That was the moment I stopped waiting for the phone to ring again.

The first hit came from nowhere I could brace for. My head snapped sideways, and the work lamp swung crazy shadows across the ceiling. I tasted blood before I felt the pain. Then a fist to my ribs, and something inside my chest gave way with a sound I couldn't hear but felt travel up through my throat.

I don't remember all of it. I remember fragments. A boot. A voice close to my ear, hot breath, no sound. My own hands, still zip-tied, twitching uselessly behind the chair. At some point my face stopped being my face — I could feel it swelling, tightening, becoming a mask that didn't belong to me.

And then Derek found the urn.

It had rolled out of my coat pocket when they'd stripped me down searching for a phone, a tracker, anything. A small ceramic thing, cream-colored, sealed with a brass clasp. I'd been carrying my mother to the storage unit that morning. I'd been carrying her home, actually — that's what I told myself. Home to the plot under the oak tree that still had no headstone.

He held it up to the light, turning it, and his mouth curved into something curious. He said something to the others. I caught the shape of the word *ashes* on his lips.

"No," I said. It came out broken, a rasp, but I said it. "Please. No."

He smiled at me like I'd finally given him something worth having. Then he brought it down against the concrete.

It didn't shatter loud — I know that only because I saw the pieces jump, silent, weightless, like the whole thing was happening underwater. Grey dust bloomed across the floor. He kicked it, almost lazily, toward a gap in the corrugated wall where black water glinted through, and I watched fourteen years of Sunday visits, of tea in the reading nook, of *that one gets good light*, dissolve into the East River like it had never existed at all.

I stopped fighting the ties after that. I closed my eyes. I let the dark come up over me like water closing over a stone.

I don't know how long passed before the door came off its hinges.

I felt it before I understood it — a shudder through the floor, sharper than the tide. Light spilled sideways across the concrete. Shapes moved fast, and there was shouting I couldn't hear but could see in the wideness of mouths, the violence of arms. Someone hit the floor hard near my feet. Someone else ran.

And then a face dropped low in front of mine, and even through the swelling, even through everything, I knew it.

Ezra.

He said my name. I saw his mouth shape it — *Everly* — and something about the way he said it, raw, stripped of every careful distance he'd ever kept from me, told me this wasn't the version of him I'd known at company dinners and board meetings. This was a man who had broken something to get here.

He cut the ties himself. His hands weren't gentle in the way people mean when they say gentle — they were exact, urgent, shaking just slightly at the edges. He lifted me like I weighed nothing, my ruined face against his shoulder, and I remember thinking, distantly, that I should be embarrassed. I wasn't. I was just tired in a way that went all the way to the bone.

In the car, he held me across his lap in the back seat, one hand pressed flat over the place my ribs had gone wrong, as if he could hold me together through his palm alone. I drifted in and out. At some point I heard him — actually heard, a rough vibration more than words — say something to the driver about a woman upstate, a crash, a name that wasn't going to be mine anymore.

I didn't understand yet what he meant. I only understood that he wasn't taking me home.

Somewhere outside Albany, a car matching my build went off a wet road into a ravine. Forty-eight hours later, a death certificate was filed under the name Everly Mills. No family requested an autopsy. No husband asked for one either.

I woke three days after that in a room with white walls and no clocks, my ribs bound, my face wrapped, in a place that did not exist on any insurance record, under the care of a doctor who called me nothing at all.

Everly Mills was gone. I just hadn't decided yet who was going to take her place.
