Chapter 5

"Explain 'more than the money,'" I demanded, holding Victor's thick business card under the harsh fluorescent light of the strip mall office.

Damian did not reach for the card. He stayed on the opposite side of the metal desk. "Victor ran a background check. He found my sister's medical debt. He also found Lena Ortiz."

"Who is Lena Ortiz?" I asked.

"A contact holding physical evidence from an old case," Damian said. His voice flattened, stripping away any emotion. "Victor threatened to send her address to the people looking for that evidence."

"What is your sister's name?"

Damian looked at the floor. Silence stretched across the room.

I placed the card on the desk, aimed my phone, and snapped a photo. I hit send on the text thread to Nora.

"I am here for the files, Damian," I told him, dropping my phone back into my tote. "This arrangement covers data recovery. It does not include my sympathy."

He nodded once. He reached into his pocket, pulled out his smartphone, and swiped his thumb across the screen to unlock it. He slid it across the metal desk. It stopped inches from my hand.

"Fifty-two messages," Damian said. "Every directive Victor sent me tonight."

I picked up the device. The screen glared brightly, illuminating a text thread titled simply 'V'. I scrolled to the top.

Message four: Stand near the silver frame. Wait for her to look.

Message fourteen: Spill the wine. Hand her the gray cloth.

Message thirty-one: Move in at exactly forty seconds into the slow dance.

My stomach twisted. I swiped down, reading the clinical breakdown of my entire evening. Every supposed coincidence, every accidental brush of his sleeve, was numbered and time-stamped.

Then I hit message forty-eight.

Do not kiss unless she initiates.

My fingers turned to ice against the metal casing of the phone. The words blurred for a second. The terrace wind, the way Damian had frozen before returning the pressure of my mouth, the exact rhythm of his breathing against my collarbone. None of it was hesitation. It was compliance.

I dropped the phone back onto the desk. It clattered against the steel.

"I should have walked away at message one," Damian said. His jaw clenched tight enough to pop.

"Should have is not evidence," I replied, staring at the shattered remains of my own judgment. "And right now is not an absolution."

"There is a backup," Damian said, leaning forward. "A physical flash drive with the cloud encryption keys. I stored it in a VIP locker at the Morgan House hotel."

"Give me the code."

"It is Victor's contract tail number," Damian answered. "One eight zero zero zero zero."

"Nora," I called out toward the open doorway. "Keep the line open. We are going back to the hotel."

"I am tracking your GPS," Nora's voice echoed from her sedan parked outside. "Do not let him drive."

The Morgan House lobby was still crowded with stragglers from the charity preview. Jazz drifted from the ballroom down the hall. I walked straight toward the executive corridor, keeping two paces ahead of Damian.

"Excuse me, miss," a voice called out.

A waiter holding a silver tray of empty champagne flutes stepped into our path. His eyes darted from my face to Damian's charcoal suit. A smirk formed on his mouth. "You are the couple from the terrace photos. The ones Mr. Kline showed the board."

Damian stepped in front of me, blocking the waiter's view with his broad shoulders. "Move aside."

I grabbed the back of Damian's suit jacket and shoved him out of my way.

"Do not play protector," I hissed at him. I looked directly at the waiter. "Tell the board to check their legal liability before they distribute stolen property."

I bypassed the man and pushed through the heavy oak doors of the executive locker room. The space smelled of expensive cedar and chlorine from the adjacent indoor pool. Row upon row of brass-plated doors lined the walls.

Damian walked past me and stopped at locker 402. He punched the six-digit code into the digital keypad. The lock beeped green. The door popped open.

He reached inside. His hand emerged completely empty.

I stepped closer, looking past his shoulder into the dark cubby. A single piece of heavy cardstock sat on the metal shelf, resting next to a black plastic keycard.

I snatched the paper. It was a reservation slip for the nineteenth-floor executive lounge. Under the guest name, elegant cursive spelled out Mara Ellison. The time slot read six o'clock in the evening.

"She took the drive," I said, holding up the black elevator keycard.

Damian checked his watch. "It is two-forty now. She might still be up there waiting for Victor."

I turned on my heel and marched straight for the private elevators at the end of the hall. I swiped the black card against the sensor. The steel doors slid open instantly.

Damian followed me inside. He stood on the far left. I pressed my back against the right wall, keeping the maximum distance between us. I hit the button for the nineteenth floor.

The doors sealed shut. The car lurched upward, a smooth, rapid ascent. The digital floor indicator flashed. Ten. Twelve. Fifteen.

At floor eighteen, a violent shudder ripped through the elevator car.

The brakes screamed. Metal ground against metal. The floor dropped an inch, throwing me off balance. I slammed my palms against the handrail to stay upright.

The overhead lights died.

Pitch darkness swallowed the space. The hum of the ventilation fan cut out, leaving a suffocating silence. A single red emergency light blinked above the control panel, casting a weak, bloody glow over the steel doors.

"Do not move," Damian ordered. His voice cut through the dark, sharp and immediate.

"I am fine," I said, my heart hammering against my ribs.

"I am in the left corner," Damian announced. "My hands are flat against the wall."

"Keep talking," I told him. I stared into the black space between us. I needed the sound to measure the distance. I hated that his voice was the only thing anchoring me in the pitch black.

"The emergency brake engaged," he said, his tone steady. "We are caught between eighteen and nineteen."

I reached into my tote for my phone. The screen remained dead. No signal.

A sharp burst of static crackled through the small speaker mounted near the ceiling.

I froze.

The static dissolved into a clear, rhythmic tapping sound. Someone drumming their fingers against a desk.

Then Victor's voice echoed through the metal box, dripping with amusement.

"Good, now make her need you."
