Chapter 4

The call came while I was in the server room. Lawson's name on my screen, which was normal. The time — 2:47 p.m. on a Tuesday — was not.

"Diana." His voice was tight. "Where are you?"

"Work. Where else?"

"I need you to come to Alaskan Way. Near the pier. Now."

Something in his tone made me stand. "What happened?"

"Just come. Please."

He hung up.

I grabbed my coat. Took the stairs because the elevator was too slow. My hands were steady on the wheel, my mind already running scenarios the way it always did — server failure, investor crisis, Memphis in trouble at school. I didn't let myself think the other thing. The thing that had been sitting in my chest for two weeks like a stone I couldn't cough up.

The rain was light. Seattle rain, the kind that doesn't need an umbrella, just patience. I saw the car first — Lawson's Tesla, stopped at an angle in the middle of the street. Then the crowd. Then the ambulance, lights turning the wet pavement blue and red and blue again.

I parked. Got out. Pushed through.

Kyra was on the curb, wrapped in someone's jacket, her face buried in her hands. A paramedic crouched beside her, speaking low and calm. Memphis stood three feet away, staring at nothing, his face the color of wet concrete.

Lawson saw me. He moved fast, caught my arm before I could get closer. "Diana—"

"What happened?"

"She stepped into the street. I didn't see her until — I swerved, I had to swerve, Memphis was in the car—"

"Who stepped into the street?"

He didn't answer. He didn't have to. I followed his eyes to the ambulance, to the stretcher being loaded inside, to the shape under the white sheet that wasn't fully covered because the body beneath it was still breathing.

I looked at him. At his hands, shaking. At his face, cracked open with guilt. At Memphis, still frozen, still staring.

"You hit someone," I said.

He nodded.

"Who?"

"I don't—" His voice broke. "I didn't see. I was watching Kyra, she just walked right into traffic, and I turned the wheel, and—"

A police officer approached, notebook out. "Sir, we need your statement."

Lawson let go of my arm. I walked to the ambulance. The paramedic at the door tried to stop me. "Family only."

"I'm her—" I stopped. I didn't know who I was anymore. "I'm Diana Hunt."

He checked his clipboard. Nodded. Let me through.

The woman on the stretcher was small. Dark hair matted with rain and blood. Her face was turned away, but I could see the shape of her, the angle of her body, wrong in a way that made my stomach turn.

The paramedic inside was checking vitals, calling out numbers I didn't understand. I stood at the door, gripping the frame, and I thought: *I don't know her.*

Then she turned her head.

I was looking at myself.

Not a mirror. Not a trick. My own face, pale and slack, eyes half-open, a tube down my throat. My coat, the gray one I'd left in the car that morning. My ring, my grandmother's ring, on a chain around my neck, visible above the collar of the hospital gown they'd already cut me into.

I stepped back. The paramedic at the door caught me. "Ma'am? You okay?"

I couldn't speak. I turned. Walked back to Lawson, my legs moving without permission, my brain trying to catch up to what my eyes had just seen.

"That's me," I said.

He stared.

"In the ambulance. That's me."

His face went white. He looked at the stretcher, then at me, then back again. "That's not—"

"Look at her coat. Look at her ring."

He looked. I watched him see it. Watched the understanding move through him like a wave, slow and then all at once.

"Oh God," he whispered. "Oh God, Diana, I didn't—"

Memphis turned. Saw me. His eyes went wide. "You're—"

"Here," I finished. "I'm here."

He looked at the ambulance. At Kyra, still crying into her hands on the curb. At his father, who had gone very still.

"Is Mom okay?" Memphis said.

I waited. I waited for him to clarify. To say my name. To look at me.

He didn't.

He ran to Kyra.

Lawson reached for me. I stepped back. "Don't."

"Diana, I didn't know it was you, I swear to God I didn't—"

"You swerved away from her." My voice was flat. "You saw her in the street and you turned the wheel."

"I had Memphis in the car—"

"You turned away from her. Toward me."

He opened his mouth. Closed it. He had no answer, because there was no answer. The geometry of it was simple. Kyra in the street. Me on the crosswalk. The wheel turning. The choice made in a fraction of a second, the choice that told me everything I'd been trying not to see for two weeks.

The ambulance doors closed. The siren started. I watched it pull away, carrying my body, and I thought about the woman on that stretcher — the one who'd sold her grandmother's house, who'd slept in a server room, who'd lost a baby and kept coding because the company needed her more than she needed to grieve.

I thought about the woman standing here on the curb, watching her husband comfort another woman while their son ran to someone else's arms.

I thought: *One of us is going to die today.*

And I decided it wouldn't be me.
