Chapter 2

Lawson found me in the kitchen two mornings after the Canlis dinner. I was measuring coffee grounds, counting each scoop the way I always did when I needed my hands to do something that had rules.

"You've been quiet," he said.

I poured water into the reservoir. Pressed start. "Have I?"

"Diana." He came up behind me, hands on my shoulders. "I know this is strange. But it doesn't change us. You're the one I love. You know that."

I turned around. Looked at his face in the early light — the face I'd memorized at 2 a.m. in a bankrupt office, back when we were both too tired to lie about anything. "Do I?"

"Of course you do." He kissed my forehead. "Kyra's just... she needs time. She's lost, Diana. She doesn't even remember leaving."

"She remembered where the coffee mugs were."

He blinked. "What?"

"First morning. She went straight to the cabinet. Didn't open a single wrong door."

Lawson's hands dropped. "You're keeping score? Really? Of coffee mugs?"

I didn't answer. The machine hissed and dripped behind me.

"She's been through something," he said, quieter now. "I don't know what. But I'm not going to punish her for surviving it."

I poured myself a cup. Black. No sugar. The way I'd drunk it for eight years in this house. "I'm not asking you to punish her. I'm asking you to remember who I am."

"I know who you are."

"Do you?"

He stared at me. Then his phone buzzed. He glanced at it. "I have to take this. Investor call."

He left.

I drank my coffee standing at the window, watching the rain, and I thought about the Burgundy he'd ordered without asking. The coat he'd given away without noticing. The question he'd just answered by walking out of the room.

---

Memphis came down an hour later. New watch catching the overhead light, leather band still stiff.

I was at the island with my laptop, going through the IPO checklist for the hundredth time. He poured cereal. Didn't look at me.

"That's nice," I said, nodding at his wrist.

"Yeah." He sat down across from me. "She got it for me."

"I see that."

He ate three bites. Then: "She said she thought about me every day."

I closed my laptop. "Memphis."

"What?"

"Can we talk? Just for a minute?"

He shrugged. Kept eating.

I chose my words carefully. The way I always did with him, the way I'd learned to do the year he came home with bruises and wouldn't say where they came from until I sat with him for three hours in his room, not pushing, just there. "I know this is complicated. I know you're happy she's back. I'm not trying to take that away from you."

"Then don't."

"I just want you to be careful. People who leave—"

"She didn't leave." His voice went hard. "She got sick. She lost her memory. It's not the same thing."

"Memphis—"

"You don't get it." He stood up. Bowl still half full. "You don't know what it's like. She's my actual mom. Not someone who just... showed up."

I felt something crack. Small. Precise. Like a weight-bearing beam giving way in a structure you thought was sound.

"I didn't just show up," I said. Quiet. Level. "I was there when you broke your leg. I was there when those kids cornered you in the parking lot. I was there for six years, Memphis. Every single day."

"Because you had to be." He looked at me now. Really looked. And his eyes were cold. "You're not my mother. You're just the woman who couldn't even give Dad a kid of his own."

I didn't move.

He grabbed his backpack. Walked out.

I sat there. Laptop closed. Coffee cold. The kitchen silent except for the hum of the refrigerator and the rain still tapping the windows like it had something to say and no one listening.

---

I drove to Barnes Dynamics at eleven that night. Parked in my spot — the one with my name on it, *Chief Technology Officer*, painted in white letters I'd once been proud of. The building was dark except for the server room.

I used my keycard. Took the stairs. Sat in the chair where I used to sleep during crisis sprints, back when sleep was a luxury and the company was forty-one days from death and I was the only thing keeping the lights on.

The Vesper Core scrolled across my monitor. Green text on black. My architecture. My logic. My eight years.

I opened the source file. Scrolled to the comments section where I kept my private notes, the ones no one else ever read because they were buried in technical documentation and written in a syntax only I used.

I typed one line:

*// architecture cannot be maintained by a person who is not allowed to exist inside it.*

I saved the file.

I sat there until dawn, watching the code run, watching the city wake up outside the window, and I thought about the boy who'd called me Mom for six years and the man who'd ordered another woman's wine without thinking and the guest suite that used to be mine.

And I started making a list.
