Chapter 1

Dawn in Manhattan was gray and cold. I walked into Mount Sinai with my head high. As the CEO of Stewart Capital, I never let people see me sweat. But beneath my coat, my chest was tight. Today was the day. After three long years on the waiting list, my four-year-old daughter, Meilani, was finally getting a new heart.

I walked down the pediatric cardiac corridor to room 412. Meilani looked tiny in the middle of the large hospital bed. Wires ran from under her gown, but her pale face lit up when she saw me. She hugged a faded gray stuffed rabbit against her ribs. Veer had given it to her during her very first hospital stay.

I pressed my thumb hard against the face of my watch. It was a nervous habit. My adopted brother, Veer, was the only one who ever noticed it.

I leaned down and kissed Meilani’s warm forehead.

"Mommy," she whispered in her careful, quiet voice. "Does Uncle Veer know I’m being brave today?"

"He knows, sweetheart," I told her softly, brushing her hair back. "He knows how strong you are. And it’s all going to be over soon, okay? You're going to get better."

She gave me a weak smile and clutched her rabbit tighter.

Outside her room, the surgical coordinator, Marcus, was waiting by the nurse's station. He looked pale. When he saw me, he shifted on his feet and looked down at the floor.

"Ms. Stewart," he said, pulling me into a quiet corner. "We have a problem."

My stomach dropped. "What kind of problem?"

"The donor heart arrived thirty minutes ago," he stammered, wiping sweat from his forehead. "Dr. Morris... he had it reassigned."

I stopped breathing. "Reassigned? To who?"

"To Dalia Wheeler," Marcus whispered. "She’s a fellow in his department. She collapsed early this morning. Dr. Morris logged her case as an immediate emergency. More urgent than your daughter's."

The world went silent around me.

I walked toward the observation deck overlooking the main operating rooms. Through the thick glass, I looked down into OR Three. My husband, Dr. Kellen Morris, stood beneath the bright surgical lights. He was already scrubbed in, adjusting his cap with practiced calm.

He didn't look up at the glass. He didn't look for me. He hadn't even stopped by Meilani’s room.

He was getting ready to cut open his mistress, using the heart meant to keep his own daughter alive.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry.

I walked into the empty hospital boardroom down the hall and shut the heavy oak door. I pulled out my phone and dialed Cassian Holt, my CFO.

He answered on the second ring. "Emberly?"

"Cassian," I said. My voice was steady and cold. "Pull every single dollar."

"What?"

"Kellen’s research lab. His clinical trials. His fellowship program. The entire cardiac wing’s operational budget from Stewart Capital. Terminate all of it. Effective immediately."

There was a split second of silence on the other end. Cassian was smart enough not to ask questions.

"Consider it done," Cassian said. "The accounts will be frozen in five minutes."

"Thank you."

I hung up.

I walked back out and waited by the double doors of OR Three.

Forty minutes later, Kellen stepped into the hallway. He pulled his surgical mask down around his neck. He had the proud, satisfied look of a man who thought he had just saved the world.

"Kellen," I said.

He stopped. A flash of annoyance crossed his face, followed quickly by his usual smooth smile. "Emberly. What are you doing in the surgical corridor? You know the rules."

"You gave Meilani's heart away," I said, stepping right in front of him. "You gave it to Dalia."

He didn't blink. He just straightened his shoulders and adopted his calm, patronizing doctor tone. "Dalia suffered acute failure. It was clinically urgent, Emberly. A surgeon’s duty transcends personal attachments. You run a company. You should understand protocol."

"Personal attachments?" My voice dropped to a whisper. "Meilani is your child! She is dying right now in room 412!"

"Keep your voice down," he snapped, glancing around the hallway. "I made a medical judgment. Dalia needed it more."

"Find another heart," I demanded, my fingernails cutting into my palms. "Reverse it. Fix this."

Kellen let out an exhausted sigh, shaking his head at me.

"Another heart will come," he said casually. "Meilani is stable enough to wait. Now excuse me, I have to monitor Dalia’s recovery."

He turned his back on me. In that single second, the man I had loved for years vanished completely. All that remained was a monster in green scrubs.

"Kellen, don't you dare walk away from me—"

I moved to follow him, but two young residents stepped into my path. They were Kellen’s loyal junior doctors.

"Back off, Ms. Stewart," the taller one said, crossing his arms. "We have orders to protect Dr. Morris's patient from outside interference."

"Get out of my way," I said.

The second resident didn't bother arguing. He shoved both hands hard against my shoulders.

I lost my footing on the polished floor. My back slammed into the concrete wall with a dull thud. A sharp ache shot through my hip and shoulder. I stood there, bruised and pushed around, inside a hospital wing my own money had built.

The two residents stood side by side, blocking the hall like bouncers.

I didn't give them the satisfaction of seeing me break. I pressed my back straight, smoothed the front of my coat, and turned around.

I walked down the hallway, through the sliding glass doors, and stepped outside.

The Manhattan sky had opened up. Cold, gray rain poured down over the pavement, soaking into my hair and clothes within seconds. I stood on the sidewalk, completely alone, with the rain freezing against my skin.

My daughter was running out of time. And I was the only one left to save her.
