Chapter 2

The phone rang again almost as soon as I set it down, Adrian’s name flashing across the screen. I let the call go to voicemail once, twice, letting the vibration sit heavy in my hand. When it came through the third time I answered, his voice came through clipped and commanding. “Elena, stay right there. I’ll be back in a few hours. The investment talks are wrapping up early, but I need you waiting at the hotel.”

I kept my tone even. “I already have plans.”

He paused, the silence stretching just long enough to feel deliberate. “Plans? What plans?”

“Something that doesn’t include waiting in a hotel suite.”

“Lucas is going to wake up tomorrow and ask for you. Helena already texted me—she thinks you got emotional at the birthday. Victoria’s father just signed off on the latest stage of the investment, and I can’t let family drama derail the whole quarter.”

I didn’t answer. Instead I ended the call, my thumb steady even though my pulse had kicked up. A few minutes later the hotel desk called up. “Mr. Cross instructed the driver to collect you at the hotel tomorrow morning at nine. He said you’d be staying in the suite until then.”

I canceled the car service without hesitation, the line going quiet after I gave my name and room number. I booked my own ride to the airport, then moved to the closet, pulling out my laptop, the external drive, and the stack of design files I’d been keeping under lock and key for the last three months. One by one I changed the shared folders back to private access, the notifications pinging softly as each file shifted. My fingers moved fast, but my mind kept circling back to the email I’d opened months ago—a routine update Adrian had sent years before about a client pitch. He’d attached my early concept sketches and labeled them “family resources.” The words had felt casual then, like something he’d thrown in a group chat. Now they sat there in plain sight, the weight of every time someone else had pulled from my work without asking, and for the first time I saw the full picture. It wasn’t just missing a dinner. It was the entire order that had been quietly assumed from me for years.

I zipped the laptop case, grabbed my passport and the last folder of printed notes, and headed for the elevator. The drive to the airport passed in a blur of traffic and my own thoughts, the city lights streaking past the car window like they were trying to pull me back. By the time I reached security, the boarding pass for London was already in my hand, the flight departing at nine thirty.

My phone rang again right as I was stepping through the doors. Julian’s name flashed on the screen. I answered on the second ring, expecting the usual warm greeting from my old mentor.

“Elena, the fellowship offer is confirmed. I sent the onboarding packet through the system this morning. You’re officially in.”

I stopped near a pillar, my grip tightening on the phone. “Julian, I need you to forward the project files to me instead. The ones for the new position.”

There was a brief pause, then his voice came back, steady but carrying that quiet note of surprise. “I already did. The email went out five minutes ago. Why the change of address?”

“I’m not being saved. Just send the files. That’s it.”

He didn’t push. “Your work passed the independent panel review. This isn’t Cross family charity. The position belongs to you because of the designs you brought to the table.”

I remembered the young designer award ten years ago—the one moment in my early career when the judges had quietly corrected an abnormal score without me ever knowing why. I’d never asked who fixed it. I didn’t ask now. “I know. Send the files.”

He agreed without another word and hung up. The line went dead, leaving me standing there with nothing but the low hum of the airport around me.

My phone buzzed a few minutes later. Adrian’s name again, the tone on the voicemail already edged with impatience when I listened. “Elena, Lucas is going to wake up looking for you. Helena thinks you got carried away at the birthday. Victoria’s father just moved the investment deal into the next stage, and I won’t have family issues messing with the group. You know how this works.”

I stepped away from the gate, the noise of announcements fading behind me. “Why could you plan a private jet, switch the necklace, take my sister and my son, but you couldn’t tell me for ten seconds that Victoria was coming?”

He stayed quiet long enough for the pause to stretch. When he finally answered the words landed flat. “Because I knew you’d make it emotional.”

I kept my voice level. “I’m going to London for the project. Lucas can call me anytime, but I’m not coming home to wait for an explanation.”

The boarding call came over the speakers, and I moved to the gate, scanning my pass. Just as I was about to step onto the jet bridge, Julian appeared on the other side, suit jacket draped over his arm and his tie loosened like he’d been running. He didn’t pick up my carry-on, didn’t offer any knowing smirk or “I told you so.” He simply held out the printed packet, the one with my pre-marriage name already changed to Marlowe.

“System preference?” he asked, voice low. “Elena Marlowe or Elena Cross?”

I took the folder, the paper crisp under my fingers. Five years of living under Adrian’s last name, and no one had ever asked what I wanted on the company roster. The question hung there, simple and direct, forcing me to pause two full seconds before I answered. “Use Elena Marlowe for work.”

Julian nodded once, sharp and final, and we fell into step together toward the jet bridge. The corridor noise surrounded us as we walked, his footsteps matching mine, until my phone vibrated in my pocket. I pulled it out, the screen lighting up with Adrian’s latest message.

“Are you with Julian?”
