Chapter 4

I left the papers on the kitchen island at 4:17 PM.

No note. No explanation. Just the envelope, centered on the white marble, with his name written on the front in my handwriting. Clean and legible. The way I write everything.

I was in my new apartment by five.

The first call came at 6:03. Then another. Then three more in quick succession. I watched the screen light up from across the room while I ate noodles out of a takeout container. His name, over and over. Then his office number. Then a number I didn't recognize—probably someone's desk phone he'd borrowed when I didn't pick up.

Seventeen calls. Forty minutes.

All of them went to voicemail on the first ring.

I had blocked every number I had for him before I even left the building.

I set down the takeout container and pulled the dossier up on my laptop. Fourth time through. I wasn't looking for new information. I was making sure I hadn't missed anything. Wire transfers—eight of them, eleven months, clean trail. Performance reports with my numbers under her name. The fellowship application with my original timestamp buried four months before hers existed. The ultrasound photo. The three words she sent him.

It's happening, P.

I closed the folder.

Then I opened my phone and scrolled to a contact I had never called from a work context. Not once. Not in five years.

David Hamilton. London.

I had already sent the PDF to his secure email. Forty-six pages. Indexed. Every document labeled and dated.

He picked up on the second ring.

"I sent you a file," I said.

"I see it." His voice was calm. It was always calm. "Give me a moment."

I heard him open it. The line was quiet except for the small sound of pages loading. I stood at the window and looked at the city. Midtown at night. All those lit windows, all those people doing whatever they were doing, completely unaware.

I waited.

"The wire transfers," David said. "The chain of custody on these records. How did you obtain them?"

"Cloned his secondary phone account. I have the original device logs as confirmation. The routing numbers match the corporate account audits from the last fiscal year."

A beat.

"All right." A pause. "What do you need?"

This was the part I had rehearsed. Not because I was nervous. Because I wanted to be precise.

"The annual gala is in twenty-two days. The Plaza Hotel. I need you there. Not as my uncle. As a special representative from the London global headquarters. That's the capacity that matters for what I'm doing."

He didn't ask me what I was planning. He already knew. He had read forty-six pages in four minutes.

"I'll be there," he said.

I heard him open a new window. Probably flights.

"Thank you," I said.

"Hallie."

"I'm fine."

A pause. Long enough to mean something.

"I know you are," he said. Then: "I'll see you in three weeks."

We hung up.

I stood at the window for another minute. The city didn't care. I liked that about it.

Then I went back to the dossier and started on pass five.

---

Phillip, it turned out, did not take the silence well.

He showed up at my building two days later. I know because the doorman—polite, professional, completely unmoved—told me about it when I came home that evening. A man in a gray coat. Asked for the fourteenth floor. Was informed that the resident had left explicit instructions. Was asked to leave. Did so after approximately four minutes of what the doorman diplomatically described as "discussion."

I thanked him and went upstairs.

The flowers arrived at my office the next morning. An extravagant arrangement. Orchids, I was told. White. Two dozen at least. Sandra Okafor had them back in the elevator before I finished my first coffee. Returned to sender. Unopened.

Then came Cynthia.

She called on a Wednesday. Her voice was the voice she used when she wanted to sound like she was being reasonable. Sanctity of marriage, she said. Family obligation. The importance of not making a scene.

I let her get through about eight seconds of it.

"Goodbye, Cynthia," I said.

I ended the call.

The final move was an email. Subject line: Can we please talk. The body ran to three paragraphs. I caught the phrase overreacting to a misunderstanding before I stopped reading.

I didn't reply.

There was nothing to say. Not because I was angry. I wasn't, particularly. The anger had been brief and quiet and it had already done its job—it had gotten me out of that apartment and into this one, with a dossier and a plan and twenty-two days on the clock.

What I felt now was simpler than anger.

I felt focused.

I went back to work.
