Chapter 5

The stitches in my right elbow pulled every time I bent my arm. Seven black thread loops held the torn skin together. The doctor at the clinic had asked what happened. I told him I tripped. He didn't believe me, but he didn't press. People in Midtown mind their own business if you pay in cash.

In the days after that visit, the noise started.

It wasn't subtle. Finnegan Hughes had thirty years of favors to call in, and he called every single one.

I bought the magazine at a corner bodega on Eighth Avenue. Glossy cover, gold lettering. Solana’s face took up the entire front page. She wore a cream cashmere turtleneck, holding Adley on her hip while Asher leaned against her knee. The headline read: *The Woman Who Chose Love Over the Spotlight: How Solana Medina Healed a Champion’s Broken Home.*

I stood by the rack and read the first paragraph.

It described her as an angel of mercy. It talked about how she stepped in when "a tragic breakdown" forced the biological mother out of the picture. It praised her patience. It called her grace under pressure a miracle.

My name wasn't in the article. They didn't even give me that. I was just *“the former partner.”* A dark shadow Dominick had finally walked away from.

By Friday, the sports networks picked it up.

I sat on the edge of the motel bed, listening to a popular boxing podcast on my phone. The host laughed into his mic.

"Look, you hate to see it," he said, ice clinking in his glass. "Dominick built an empire. Some women just can't handle the altitude when a man reaches the top. Lorelai Sanders is a cautionary tale. She got jealous, she lost her head, and now she’s out in the cold. That’s the fight game."

I tried calling people who knew the truth.

I called Mickey, an old cutman my dad had trained twenty years ago. Mickey had eaten Sunday dinners at our kitchen table. My dad paid off Mickey’s rent when his gym went under.

The line rang four times.

"Mickey," I said the second he picked up. "It’s Lori."

Silence hung on the line, thick and heavy.

"Lori," he muttered. His voice was low, nervous. "You shouldn't be calling me."

"Mickey, you know what Dom is doing. You know who was in that corner with him from day one. Tell them. Just tell one reporter what my dad did for—"

"I got two grandkids to put through school, Lori," Mickey whispered. "Finnegan runs the sanctioning board now. If I cross Dom, I don't work in this state again. Don't call this number."

*Click.*

The dial tone hummed in my ear.

I called three more trainers. Two went straight to voicemail. The third man answered, said, "Stay away from Dom, kid," and hung up before I could take a breath.

Every door slammed shut. Every lock turned from the inside. Dominick’s money and Finnegan’s network built a fortress, and I was locked outside in the dirt.

Then, on Tuesday night, an email hit my inbox.

The sender was a random string of numbers from a burner domain. No subject line. Just a single PDF attachment and two typed words: *Look now.*

I tapped the screen and opened the file.

It was a legal motion filed in New York County Family Court that morning. Dominick’s high-priced lawyers had requested an immediate, permanent restriction on all my parental access. No supervised visits. No calls. No letters. Nothing until the twins turned eighteen.

The grounds were listed in bold black font: **Severe Emotional Instability and Threat of Harassment.**

Underneath was the evidence.

I scrolled down, my breath hitching in my chest.

They had submitted printouts of text messages. My name was at the top of the header. The timestamps matched the weeks right after I signed the divorce papers.

Except the words were wrong.

In real life, I had sent short, desperate pleas. *Please let me hear their voices. Please tell me they’re eating.*

On the court document, the screenshots were entirely different. The text bubbles were spliced and rearranged. Sentences had been added in my font, my layout, my name.

*“If you don’t bring them to me, I will take them from the street.”*

*“You think you’re safe, Dominick? Neither of you are safe.”*

*“I’ll burn everything down before I let that bitch touch my kids.”*

It looked flawless. The formatting was exact. The digital timestamps lined up with real calls I had made. Any judge skimming through the pile would see an unhinged woman making violent threats against her own family.

My hands began to shake. The phone felt ice-cold against my fingertips.

I looked up at the water-stained wallpaper of the motel room. The red neon sign outside the window flashed on and off, painting the cheap bedspread in pulses of dark crimson.

They hadn't just thrown me away.

This wasn't an angry ex-husband lashing out in a fight. This was a factory. A massive, well-funded machine designed to grind my reputation into powder, erase my name from legal records, and make sure my children grew up believing their mother was a monster.

Dominick was the fist. Finnegan was the brain. And together, they were burying me alive while the whole world cheered for the champion.

I set the phone face-down on the nightstand.

I didn't scream. I didn't cry. My chest was entirely still.

For the first time since that hospital room, the fog cleared from my head. I looked at my bruised reflection in the dark television screen.

They wanted a monster.

They were going to get one.
