My Husband Forced Me to Save His Mistress
Chapter 2
The locker room smells like antiseptic and old coffee. I'm pulling off my scrubs when I see it.
A medication vial. Sitting on the top shelf of my locker. Right next to my stethoscope.
I pick it up. Turn it over. The label is correct. Dosage is standard. But I didn't put it there.
I set it back down. Close the locker. Tell myself I'm being paranoid.
But my hands won't stop shaking.
---
The board review happens three days later.
I sit at the end of a long conference table. Eight faces staring at me. Dr. Garrison at the head. He's been chief of staff for twenty years. He won't look me in the eye.
"Dr. Lawrence," he says. "We've received a complaint regarding patient care under your supervision. Specifically, a medication error that resulted in severe complications."
I sit up straighter. "What patient?"
He slides a file across the table. I open it. Read the name. Mrs. Chen. Room 412. Post-surgical recovery.
I remember her. Routine hysterectomy. No complications. She was discharged two days ago.
"There was no error," I say. "I reviewed her chart myself. Everything was—"
"The electronic records show a dosage discrepancy," Dr. Garrison interrupts. "Administered under your credentials."
My stomach drops. "That's not possible."
"We also have a witness."
The door opens. Frankie walks in.
She doesn't look at me. Just takes the empty chair across the table. Smooths her skirt. Folds her hands.
"Dr. Oliver," Garrison says. "Please describe what you observed."
Frankie clears her throat. Her voice is soft. Regretful. "I was reviewing charts in the nurse's station. I saw Dr. Lawrence access Mrs. Chen's medication protocol. She changed the dosage. I thought it was odd, but I didn't want to question her judgment."
I'm on my feet before I realize I'm moving. "That's a lie."
"Dr. Lawrence—"
"She's lying," I say again. My voice is too loud. Too sharp. "I never touched that protocol. Check the timestamps. Check the—"
"We did check," Garrison says quietly. "Your credentials were used. The change was made from your login."
The room is spinning. I grip the edge of the table.
"Someone else used my login," I say. "Someone planted—"
"That's a serious accusation," Garrison says.
I look at Frankie. She meets my eyes now. Just for a second. And I see it. The guilt. The greed. The satisfaction.
She sold me out.
"This review is concluded," Garrison says. "Pending further investigation, Dr. Lawrence, you're suspended effective immediately. We'll notify you of our final decision."
I don't remember leaving. But I'm in the parking garage. Sitting in my car. Staring at the concrete wall.
My phone buzzes. A text from Cole.
*Come home.*
I drive to the penthouse. Walk through the door. Cole is in the foyer. Elizabeth is beside him.
Tallulah is on the couch. Her hand rests on her stomach. Protective. Performative.
"Reese," Elizabeth says. Her voice is ice. "We need to talk."
---
They take me to the east wing. A guest room I've never been in. The curtains are drawn. The air is stale.
Elizabeth closes the door. Locks it.
"You endangered my grandchild," she says.
I stare at her. "What?"
"Tallulah told us everything. The medication. The negligence. You tried to hurt her."
"That's insane," I say. "I would never—"
Elizabeth slaps me. The crack echoes. My cheek burns.
"Don't lie to me," she hisses.
Cole is standing by the window. Watching. Silent.
"Cole," I say. My voice breaks. "Please. You know me. You know I wouldn't—"
He doesn't move.
Elizabeth nods to someone behind me. Two men step forward. Security. I recognize them from the building.
They grab my arms.
"What are you doing?" I twist. Try to pull away. "Cole!"
Elizabeth picks something up from the dresser. A glass vase. She smashes it against the floor. Shards scatter.
She kneels. Picks up a piece. Examines it.
"You need to learn," she says softly. "That actions have consequences."
The men force me down. Hold me. I'm screaming now. Kicking. But they're too strong.
Elizabeth's hand moves. Sharp. Deliberate.
The pain is white-hot. Blinding. I can't breathe. Can't think.
Cole turns away. Looks out the window.
I scream his name. Over and over. Until my voice gives out.
---
I wake up in a hospital bed. Not Manhattan Presbyterian. Somewhere else. Smaller. Private.
A nurse is checking my IV. She won't look at me.
"What happened?" I whisper.
She doesn't answer. Just finishes her notes and leaves.
My phone is on the bedside table. I reach for it. My body screams in protest.
There's an email. From Manhattan Presbyterian.
*Dear Dr. Lawrence, effective immediately, your employment has been terminated. Please return all hospital property within 48 hours.*
I close my eyes.
The ceiling is white. Blank. Empty.
Just like everything else.
