Chapter 3

Noemi came to the penthouse on a Tuesday morning with a folder in her hands and tears already streaming down her face.

I was in the kitchen when I heard her voice in the entryway. Soft. Broken. The sound of a woman who had discovered something terrible and could barely speak through the grief of it.

"I need to show you something," she said to Nathaniel. "About my mother."

I set down my coffee cup and walked to the doorway. Nathaniel was standing by the console table, the folder open in his hands. Noemi stood beside him, one hand pressed to her mouth, her shoulders shaking.

"I found these in her medical files," Noemi whispered. "I didn't want to believe it. But the dates match. The compound. Everything."

Nathaniel's face went still. That terrible, controlled stillness I'd learned to recognize. The kind that came right before something broke.

He looked up. Saw me standing there.

"Did you develop a pharmaceutical compound in 2019?" His voice was flat. Empty. "Experimental gene therapy. Targeted treatment for mitochondrial disorders."

My stomach dropped. "Yes. But it never went past initial trials. The data wasn't—"

"Noemi's mother died from complications related to an experimental treatment," he said. "The same compound. The same timeline."

"That's not possible," I said carefully. "The trial was shut down. The compound was never released."

Noemi made a small, choked sound. "She was so sick. She would have tried anything. Someone must have given it to her."

Nathaniel closed the folder. Set it down. Reached for his phone.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"Calling my attorney," he said, and walked out of the room.

Noemi stayed behind. She looked at me for one long moment, her face wet with tears, her expression perfectly arranged.

Then she smiled.

Just a flicker. Just enough.

And walked away.

I stood alone in the entryway and pressed my fingertips together, hard, while something cold and sharp moved through my chest.

The prenatal appointment was scheduled for Thursday at two.

I went alone. Nathaniel hadn't spoken to me in two days. I lay on the examination table while the nurse took my blood pressure and asked routine questions about sleep and nausea and movement. Everything was fine. The baby was fine. I was seventeen weeks, and the small curve beneath my ribs was finally visible enough that strangers on the street had started smiling at me.

The nurse left to get the doctor.

The door slammed open.

Nathaniel stood in the doorway, his face white and rigid. Behind him, Noemi hovered in the hallway, her hand pressed to her chest, her eyes wide.

"Get up," Nathaniel said.

I sat up slowly. The IV line pulled taut. "What are you—"

He grabbed my arm and dragged me upright. The needle tore free. Blood welled up, hot and bright.

"You killed her mother," he said. His voice was rough. Shaking. "You gave her an untested compound and you killed her."

"I didn't," I said. My voice came out steady. Calm. "Nathaniel, those records are forged. If you just let me—"

"Stop lying."

"I'm not—"

"You've been lying since the day I met you." He was standing too close. His hands were shaking. "You pretended to be something you weren't. You wormed your way into this marriage. You got pregnant to trap me. And now I find out you've been developing drugs that kill people?"

"That's not what happened," I said. My heart was pounding so hard I could feel it in my throat. "Please. Just listen—"

Noemi stepped into the room. Her face was arranged in an expression of pained reluctance. "Nathaniel," she said softly. "Maybe we should—"

She moved forward. Reached out like she was going to put a hand on his shoulder.

And shoved me.

Hard.

I stumbled backward. My hip hit the edge of the examination table. I tried to catch myself. My hand slipped. I went down.

The floor was cold. White tile. I hit it with my shoulder, my side, my hip. Pain shot through me, sharp and deep, and something inside me twisted wrong.

I screamed.

Nathaniel was already walking toward the door.

"Sir," someone said. A nurse. "Sir, you need to—"

He kept walking.

The pain got worse. Sharper. Wet heat spread beneath me, soaking through my clothes, pooling on the white tile. I couldn't breathe. Couldn't think. Just the pain, and the blood, and the sound of my own voice screaming for someone to help me.

Medical staff rushed in. Voices overlapping. Hands on me, moving me, lifting me. Someone was shouting for a doctor. Someone else was pulling equipment from the wall.

Through the open doorway, I saw Noemi standing in the hallway.

She was looking at me through the window.

And she was smiling.

Then she turned and walked away.

I lost the baby on the floor of that hospital room.

The doctor told me later. Sometime after they'd moved me to a bed. Sometime after the bleeding stopped. Her voice was quiet and professional and very kind.

"I'm so sorry," she said. "There was nothing we could do."

I lay in the white bed in the white room and stared at the ceiling.

A nurse came in later. I heard her talking to someone in the hallway. Her voice was low, but the door was cracked, and sound carried.

"The husband left before we even finished the assessment," she said. "Didn't ask. Didn't wait. Just walked out."

I pressed my fingertips together.

Hard.

Until I couldn't feel anything at all.
