Chapter 1

The sky over Manhattan was the color of a bruise when I finally stopped waiting for the sound of his key in the door.

I stood at the window in the penthouse living room, floor-to-ceiling glass separating me from forty floors of empty air, and pressed my fingertips together, one hand cupping the other, the way I always did when something in my chest needed holding down. Behind me, on the little marble table by the window, the anniversary dinner I'd ordered was still sitting there. Untouched. Cold. A single stem of white freesia drooped in its vase, the water gone cloudy overnight.

Three years married to Nathaniel Larson, and he hadn't come home.

I looked at the manila folder beside the flowers. DIVORCE AGREEMENT, stamped in block letters across the front, the ink slightly smudged where I'd handled it too many times. I'd spent three months putting it together with a private attorney Nathaniel didn't know existed, meeting her in coffee shops in Queens where nobody who mattered would recognize my face. I reached for it. My fingers touched the cover.

Not yet, I told myself, and set it back down.

By noon, he wanted to see me.

His study smelled like leather and the cologne he wore when he wanted to remind a room who was in charge. He didn't stand when I walked in. He just slid a folder across the desk, the way you'd hand someone a parking ticket.

"Read it," he said.

I opened it. A medical report, Noemi's name at the top, a string of terms I understood better than he ever would. Critical stage. Deteriorating function. I set it down carefully, like it might burn me.

"The divorce is suspended," Nathaniel said. "I've already called the attorney. It's void."

Something cold moved through my stomach. "You voided it. Without telling me."

"I'm telling you now."

"That agreement took me three months, Nathaniel. Why wasn't I consulted?"

He looked up then, finally, and his eyes held nothing I recognized as a husband's. "Because this is not a negotiation."

He stood, buttoned his jacket, and walked past me like I was a chair he'd finished sitting in.

That night he came to our bedroom instead of his own guest suite, which should have warned me. He sat on the edge of the bed and set his phone down, screen still lit.

"I pulled your medical file," he said. No apology in it. "Your cycle. Today's optimal."

I felt my whole body go very still. "You went into my private records."

"It's a shared account. Legally it's not private." He said it the way he'd correct a typo in a contract. "Noemi needs a viable donor match. Cord blood therapy. You know what that requires."

"I'm not a lab, Nathaniel."

"You're my wife." He reached for me like that settled it.

I lay in the dark afterward and pressed my fingertips together, hard enough to hurt, and understood — not as a fear anymore, not as some ugly suspicion I could talk myself out of — exactly what I was to him. A vessel with a womb attached. Nothing more.

Three weeks later, I stood in the bathroom and stared at a thin plastic stick until the second pink line stopped looking like a mistake.

I knelt, opened the cabinet under the sink, and pulled out the burner phone hidden behind a box of tampons Nathaniel would never think to touch. Keegan had given it to me months ago, tucked inside a jewelry box, calling it "standard precaution." We both knew better.

*It happened,* I typed. *I need to move faster.*

The reply came in under two minutes.

*I know. The attorneys are ready. So is everything else. You decide when.*

I put the phone away and pressed my hand flat against my stomach, and for one small moment, underneath all the dread, something in me lit up anyway.

My father arrived four days later, unannounced, the way he always did when he wanted the advantage of surprise.

Ford Edwards filled a doorway the way weather fills a sky — you felt him before you saw him. He had transfer documents in a leather folder, papers that would hand him even more control over my mother's company, the one thing of hers I had left. Kaiden trailed behind him, hands in his pockets, that easy half-smile he wore like it cost him nothing.

"Sign it," Ford said, sliding the papers across the console table.

I didn't move. "This is my company. Mom left it to me."

His voice dropped into that calm, reasonable register I'd learned to fear more than shouting. "You've never appreciated what I gave up for you. Ungrateful. Just like always." He straightened a coaster on the table, a small unconscious tic I'd catalogued years ago, right before he said the thing that would hurt the most. "You owe me everything."

"No," I said quietly.

His hand moved before I finished the word. The slap landed hard enough to snap my head sideways, hot and ringing.

Kaiden watched from the doorway. Said nothing. Did nothing.

I didn't sign.

After they left, I sank down onto the cold marble of the entryway, one hand pressed to my burning cheek, my other hand resting on the small curve beneath my ribs. And somewhere underneath the pain, quiet and absolute, something in me finally cracked open — not breaking, exactly.

More like waking up.
