Chapter 3

Sylvie brought the wheelchair herself. She rolled it right up to the nurses' station like she owned the floor, wearing scrubs she definitely wasn't licensed to wear, holding a clipboard with a form neither of us had the authority to sign. "Transfer for outside consult," she told the charge nurse, breezy, bored, like she did this every day. The nurse looked at the form, looked at me in my hoodie with my hood up, and said nothing. Sometimes the world just lets you walk through it if you move fast enough.

We made it to the parking garage before I let myself breathe.

"You good?" Sylvie asked, buckling me in like I was made of glass.

"I'm good." I wasn't. My hands were shaking so hard I had to sit on them.

Swedish Medical Center smelled different from Puget Sound. Newer paint. Different soap in the bathrooms. I filled out the intake forms myself, my own handwriting, my own name, no one checking with Marco first. The technician was a woman named Rosa with kind eyes and a gentleness in her hands that made me want to cry before she'd even started.

"Twenty-two weeks, three days," she read off my chart. "We're going to take a good long look at that heart, okay?"

I nodded. I couldn't talk.

The wand moved across my belly and the screen bloomed into gray and white, and there he was — four chambers, beating steady, valves opening and closing like tiny doors. Rosa narrated as she measured. Aorta, normal. Pulmonary artery, normal. Outflow tracts, clean.

"He's perfect," she said, and I made a sound I didn't recognize as mine.

She let me listen to it. A full minute, just the whoosh-whoosh-whoosh of him, fast and sure, filling the room. I cried so hard the nurse had to steady me under both arms to get me back into the wheelchair. Sylvie didn't ask questions on the drive back. She just reached over once and squeezed my knee, hard, like she was trying to hold something in me together.

I folded the printout into my wallet, behind my license, where no one would think to look. I didn't tell anyone else. It wasn't a weapon yet. It was just a thing I could hold in the dark and know was true.

Four days later, Marco came in holding a different piece of paper.

He had his grief face on — the one he probably practiced in mirrors, the one that made grieving families trust him with their worst days. Keily stood two steps behind him, hands folded like she was in church, eyes wet and ready.

"Raina." He sat on the edge of my bed without asking. "I need you to be strong for a minute."

"Don't."

"It's the heart." He said it soft, careful, like he was handing me something fragile. "Hypoplastic left heart syndrome. Severe. The left ventricle never developed. It's — Raina, it's not compatible with life."

The room went very quiet. Even the monitor seemed to hold its breath.

"That's not possible," I said.

"I wish it wasn't." His eyes were wet now too. A matched set. "I've gone over the images three times. I had Keily double-check the measurements independently." He didn't look at her when he said her name. "There's no ambiguity here."

"I want a second opinion."

"Raina—"

"I want a different doctor. A different hospital. Anyone."

He shook his head slowly, patient, like I was a patient asking for something unreasonable. "You're too unstable to transport right now. And at this gestational age, waiting for a second read — every day matters. I wouldn't be doing my job if I let you wait on false hope."

"False hope." I heard my own voice come out flat.

"I know this is the hardest thing I've ever had to tell you." His hand moved toward mine on the blanket. I didn't let him reach it. "But I'm not just your husband right now. I'm his doctor too. And I'm telling you — there's no version of this where he survives."

My hand drifted toward my wallet on the nightstand. Just an inch. A reflex, more than a decision.

And I saw it — half a second, no more. Something flickered behind his eyes. Not grief. Anticipation. Like a man watching to see if you'll show your cards.

I stopped my hand cold. Let it fall back to my lap like it had never moved at all.

"Okay," I said instead, and made my voice small, defeated, exactly what he wanted to hear. "Okay. What happens now."

He exhaled, relief loosening his shoulders, and reached for my hand again. This time I let him take it. It felt like holding a snake by choice.

Behind him, Keily wiped her eyes with one knuckle, careful not to smear her mascara.

I looked past both of them, at the ceiling tile with the water stain shaped like a comma, and I thought about the sound Rosa let me listen to for a full minute. Steady. Sure. Alive.

I said nothing about it. Not yet. That paper in my wallet wasn't a weapon.

Not yet.
