Chapter 5

Anthony's supervisor had held his position for eight weeks. I knew this because Melissa knew it, and Melissa told the break room, and the break room told me whether I wanted to hear it or not.

"Eight weeks," she said, stirring her coffee like it personally owed her something. "That's basically unheard of. A fellowship like that? They usually fill it in days." She looked at me over the rim of her mug. "He called them. Tried to explain. They said no."

I didn't ask how she knew that part. She always knew that part.

I thought about it once, at my desk, staring at a line item that wouldn't balance. Anthony sitting in his car outside a building he used to walk into like he owned it. A decade of research. Gone because he traded it for a lie in a hospital gown.

I didn't feel sorry for him. I want to be clear about that, even to myself. What I felt was closer to recognition — the way you recognize a math problem you already know the answer to.

He sat outside my apartment that night. I saw the car when I came home, engine off, him inside with his hands on the wheel like he was driving somewhere in his head even though the car wasn't moving. I didn't knock on the glass. I went inside. Twenty minutes later, from my window, I watched the security guard walk over and tap on the door. Anthony rolled it down an inch. Some words passed between them. Then the car pulled away, slow, like it hurt to leave.

---

Jolene had a harder time letting things go.

She tracked him through his phone, through people who still owed her small favors, through the particular radar women like her keep tuned for exactly one frequency. Nine days without a call. No return to the apartment. His absence had a shape now, and the shape was Natalie.

She sat with that for a long time. Not crying. Not the way people expect. She sat very still, the way you sit when you're doing math in your head and you don't like the answer.

She had lost. That was the fact of it. But somewhere in the quiet, factual part of her mind, loss reorganized itself into something else. Not loss. A wrong done to her. An injustice that required a response.

She started making calls. Not to Anthony. To other people. Building something. I didn't know that yet. I only knew, later, that there was a version of this story where Jolene wasn't finished, and that version was already loading while the rest of us thought the worst had already happened.

---

He was waiting again on Thursday. No flowers this time. No capsule in a blister pack. Just him, leaning against the same streetlight, hands empty at his sides.

He'd lost weight. I noticed it the way I notice things now — clinically, at a slight remove, like reading a chart. His coat hung different on his shoulders. There was a grayness under his eyes that hadn't been there a week ago.

"Natalie."

I stopped because stopping was easier than pretending I hadn't heard him.

"I'm not going to ask you to try anything else," he said. "No pill. No professor. I just—" He stopped. Started again. "I need to ask you something, and I need you to actually answer it. Not deflect. Not walk past me."

I waited.

"Do you feel anything," he said, "when you look at me? Anything at all?"

The question sat in the cold air between us. A bus went by on the street behind him, headlights sweeping across his face and then gone.

I took my time. Not because I didn't know the answer. Because he deserved, in some strange fairness I couldn't fully explain to myself, to receive it complete and considered rather than thrown at him.

"I feel what I'd feel looking at anyone I don't know," I said. "Mild acknowledgment that a person is standing in front of me. That's all."

His face did something I hadn't seen it do before. Not the raw fracture from the sidewalk that first morning. Something quieter and worse — like a man watching a door close that he hadn't realized, until that exact second, was the last one.

"That's it," he said. Not a question. He was testing the words in his own mouth, seeing if they'd hold weight. "Mild acknowledgment."

"That's it."

He didn't say anything else. I hadn't expected him to. I walked past him, the way I had a dozen times now, and I heard nothing behind me — no footsteps following, no voice calling my name. Just the particular silence of a man standing very still under a streetlight, finally understanding something he'd spent six weeks refusing to.

I let the door close behind me and rode the elevator up alone. In the mirrored panel, I watched my own face. Calm. Unbothered. A woman on her way home from a long day, nothing more.

I pressed my thumb once against the inside of my wrist.

Then I let it go, and didn't think about him again that night.
