Chapter 2

The rumor reached our office on a Tuesday.

Melissa came into the break room with the particular energy she reserves for news she's been holding too long. I was at the coffee machine. I didn't turn around.

"So apparently," she said, to no one and everyone, "Anthony Griffin quit his position at the university. Full research fellowship. Just walked away from it." She paused for effect. "He's been taking her to every appointment. Carrying her bags. The whole thing."

Someone made a sympathetic sound.

"I mean," Melissa continued, lowering her voice in the way that means she's about to be louder, "it's almost romantic. If you don't think about, you know. Everything."

I poured my coffee. I put the pot back. I walked to my desk.

Behind me, the break room went quiet in that specific way it does when people are watching you leave.

I opened the quarterly report and kept working.

I thought about it once, briefly, that afternoon. Anthony in a hospital corridor somewhere, carrying two cups of bad coffee, performing devotion for an audience of one. Five years of research. A fellowship that had taken him a decade to earn. Set down like a bag he'd decided was too heavy.

I pressed my thumb against the inside of my wrist once.

Then I went back to the spreadsheet.

The call came on a Thursday evening. I know that because I was making dinner when my mother told me, and I remember the sound of the pan on the burner going quiet as she spoke.

She had a contact at the hospital. She didn't explain how. She just said: "There's something you should know."

I turned the burner off and listened.

Anthony had been in the corridor for forty minutes.

He knew this because he'd checked his phone twice — once to see if Natalie had opened the message he hadn't sent yet, once because he didn't know what else to do with his hands. The coffee from the vending machine had gone cold. He held both cups anyway.

The doctor came out of the room and stopped in front of him.

Anthony stood up. "How is she?"

The doctor looked at him with an expression Anthony couldn't immediately categorize. Not sympathy. Not urgency. Something flatter than either.

"Mr. Griffin," the doctor said. "I need you to sit back down."

He sat.

The doctor told him. Clearly, in order, without softening it. The blood panel. The imaging. The records that had been submitted to three separate oncologists over the past eight months. The records that did not match a single physiological marker in Jolene's current results, or her historical ones, or any reasonable projection from either.

There was no cancer.

There had never been any cancer.

The records were falsified.

Anthony set both cups of coffee down on the bench beside him. Very carefully. As if they were made of something that could shatter.

He sat there for a long time after the doctor left.

Jolene was in the apartment when he got home. She was on the couch with a blanket over her legs — a habit she'd kept, he realized now, for eight months. A prop. He stood in the doorway and looked at her and tried to find the woman he thought he knew underneath the performance.

She looked up. She read his face.

She didn't say anything right away. She watched him with a patience that turned his stomach, the way you watch a situation you've already calculated the outcome of.

Then she said, "You talked to the doctor."

"There's no cancer, Jolene."

"Anthony —"

"There was never any cancer."

She was quiet for a moment. Then she set the blanket aside and sat up straight. The fragility dropped from her posture like a coat she'd finally decided to take off.

"I did it for us," she said. Her voice was steady. Almost reasonable. "You would have stayed with her forever. You know that. You would have stayed and been miserable and told yourself it was enough."

"I drugged my wife."

"She wasn't right for you."

"I erased five years of her life." His voice didn't rise. It went somewhere quieter and more terrible. "I filed the divorce before she woke up. I stood in a chapel and let everyone watch. Because I believed you were dying."

Jolene met his eyes. "You're free now. That's what matters."

He looked at her for a long moment.

Every justification he had built — every careful moral architecture he had constructed to make what he did to Natalie survivable — he could feel it now, the foundation of it. This woman. This lie. Eight months of falsified records and a blanket over her legs and a voice calibrated to sound like someone running out of time.

He turned and walked to the door.

"Anthony." Her voice sharpened. "Anthony, where are you —"

He closed the door behind him.

He stood in the hallway for a moment. The overhead light buzzed faintly. Somewhere below, a door slammed.

He thought about a woman sitting at a kitchen table with divorce papers and a wedding ring she didn't recognize. A woman who had looked at five years of her own life and felt nothing, because he had made sure of it.

He pulled out his phone.

He didn't know what he was going to say. He only knew, with a clarity that arrived too late and too cold, that he had to find her.
