Chapter 5

Dr. Voss called on a Wednesday.

I was at my desk, going through the civil suit paperwork Diana had sent over. Coffee going cold beside me. Rain on the windows again. Seattle in November, same as always.

'Grace, I have your blood work back from last week's draw.' Dr. Voss's voice was careful. The kind of careful that means something. 'Everything looks normal. Actually, better than normal. Your hormone panels are excellent. Your ovarian reserve is—' She paused. 'Grace, there's no medical reason you shouldn't be able to conceive.'

I stopped moving.

'I've reviewed your entire file,' she continued. 'The IVF cycles, the failed transfers. Honestly, I can't explain it. From a purely physiological standpoint, you're perfectly fertile.'

The room was very quiet.

'Thank you, Sandra,' I said. 'I appreciate the call.'

I hung up. Sat there for a moment with the phone in my lap.

Then I got my keys and drove home.

---

I started with the top shelf. Pulled everything out and lined it up on the bathroom counter. Vitamins, supplements, the prescription bottles from the IVF cycles I couldn't bring myself to throw away. Ethan's cologne, still there. I set it on the floor.

I knew what I was looking for before I found it.

The prenatal calcium capsules were in a white bottle with a green label. Ethan had ordered them online two years ago, switched me over from the pharmacy brand, said these were higher quality. *Better absorption, babe. I read the reviews.* He'd organized them into my pill case every Sunday night, right there on this counter, while I brushed my teeth. Sometimes he'd hand me the Monday dose himself in the morning with a glass of water and a kiss on the forehead.

I put the bottle in a zip-lock bag. Drove to a private lab in Bellevue. Paid cash.

Then I went home and waited.

---

Forty-eight hours.

The lab tech called me at 8 a.m. Friday. She read the results in a flat, professional voice. Mifepristone. Present in every capsule tested. Consistent dosage. Consistent across the full sample.

I thanked her. Asked her to email the report.

I sat down on the bathroom floor.

Three years. Three years of injections that left bruises up and down my stomach. Three years of waiting in waiting rooms with my hands in my lap, watching the clock, trying to stay hopeful. Three years of failed cycles and the specific grief of that—the kind that doesn't have a name because the thing you lost never quite existed yet. Three years of lying awake at night wondering what was wrong with my body. Apologizing to Ethan with my eyes when the results came back negative. Believing I was broken.

And every single morning, he handed me the pill with a kiss.

*I believe in us, Grace.*

I stayed on the floor for a long time. I didn't cry. I was past crying. This was something else—something that moved through me slow and tectonic, rearranging things that would never go back to where they were.

Finally I got up. Called Diana.

---

Diana was silent for four full seconds after I told her. That was the longest I'd ever heard her go without talking.

'Send me the lab report the second it hits your inbox,' she said. 'I'm filing the additional suit today. One point five million. Emotional distress, bodily harm, reproductive coercion.' Her voice had gone to steel. 'Grace, this isn't a divorce case anymore. This is a crime.'

She built it piece by piece. Three years of IVF medical records. Photographs of my bruised injection sites, documented at the time by my own doctor. The lab analysis. The financial trail—Diana's investigator found the purchase history inside forty-eight hours. A fake name. A P.O. box in Tacoma. Recurring orders, every three months, for two and a half years.

He'd planned it. Maintained it. Restocked it.

Every Sunday night, pill case open on the counter, while I brushed my teeth ten feet away.

---

That night I took the wedding china out of the cabinet.

Ethan had picked it out. White with a thin gold rim. He'd been so particular about it—spent forty minutes in the store, held each plate up to the light. I'd loved that about him then. His attention to things.

I took the first plate to the kitchen floor and dropped it.

The sound was clean and final.

I did every one. Methodically, plate by plate, bowl by bowl, the serving platter last. I wasn't screaming. I wasn't crying. I just stood there and listened to each one go.

When it was done I swept up every fragment. Bagged it neatly. Set it by the door.

I didn't feel better. But I felt true. Like something that had been slightly off-angle for years had finally, irrevocably, clicked into place.

I washed my hands. Went to my drafting table. Opened my sketchbook to the first clean page I'd touched in months.

I picked up a pencil and started to draw.
