Chapter 2

The second day at the hospital brought a new kind of performance. I sat in the same chair, in the same position, watching the same blue light wash over Ethan's unconscious form. The monitors beeped their steady rhythm. Everything was the same except for the cold clarity that had settled in my chest, like ice forming on a lake in winter.

I heard the click of heels on linoleum before I saw her.

She appeared in the doorway carrying a bouquet of white lilies—expensive ones, with the baby's breath arranged just so. Her hair was glossy black, her makeup perfect, her cream-colored blouse and pencil skirt pressed to precision. Everything about her announced that she was someone who mattered.

'Mrs. Thomas?' Her voice was warm, practiced. 'I'm Nylah Martinez. I work with Ethan at the firm. I came as soon as I heard.'

I stood, taking her offered hand. Her grip was firm, confident. 'Thank you for coming. It's been... difficult.'

'Of course it has.' She set the lilies on the side table and gave me a look of practiced sympathy. 'How is he doing?'

'Stable, they say. We'll know more when he wakes up.' I gestured to the chair I'd been sitting in. 'Please, sit. You must be exhausted after the drive.'

She settled into the chair with fluid grace. 'I was actually already in the city for a conference. When I heard about the accident...' She trailed off with a small, practiced sigh. 'Ethan is so important to our team. We're all just devastated.'

I watched her face as she spoke. The way her eyes flicked to Ethan's still form, then back to me. The slight tension at the corners of her mouth when she said 'devastated.' I knew what devastation looked like. This wasn't it.

'You must be very close, then,' I said. 'To drive all the way here.'

'Oh, yes.' A smile that didn't reach her eyes. 'We work very closely together. Ethan's... projects are quite complex.'

I nodded, letting silence stretch between us. She shifted slightly in the chair.

'How are you holding up?' she asked finally.

'As well as can be expected.' I pressed my fingers to my lips, summoning the tears that had been my constant companions these past two days. They came easily. 'The doctors have been very kind. But there's been some... complicated news.'

Her posture straightened almost imperceptibly. 'Oh?'

I looked down at my hands, letting my voice tremble. 'The impact... it was severe. The doctors say there was significant trauma to his lower abdomen. They're not sure...' I took a shaky breath. 'They're not sure he'll recover full reproductive function.'

The color drained from her face so quickly I almost felt sorry for her. Almost.

'Oh, Grace, I'm so sorry.' Her voice had gone flat.

I looked up at her, letting my eyes fill with fresh tears. 'It's been such a blow. We've been trying for a baby for so long. Three years of IVF treatments, all the shots and procedures...' I dabbed at my eyes with a tissue. 'And now this.'

She nodded mechanically, but I could see her mind racing behind her eyes. The calculations changing. The value assessments shifting.

'Three years,' I repeated softly. 'That's a lot of money, isn't it? A lot of... investment.'

Something flickered across her face—a moment of uncertainty, quickly masked. 'I'm sure insurance will cover some of it.'

'Insurance.' I smiled thinly. 'Insurance doesn't cover everything, though. Especially not when the money is going to the wrong place. Tribute, for instance.'

Her eyes snapped to mine.

'Eighty-five thousand dollars' worth of tribute,' I said, my voice dropping to a near-whisper. 'That's quite a lot of devotion. Almost as much as the cost of a golden retriever collar with a silver ring. Though I suppose some pets are worth more than others.'

The mask slipped completely. For one unguarded moment, I saw naked panic in her eyes.

'You don't understand,' she began.

'I understand perfectly.' I leaned forward, my voice still soft but carrying a new edge. 'I understand that you've been taking payments from my husband for years. I understand that you've been storing videos of those payments on your phone. I understand that you walked in here today thinking you were looking at a grieving, oblivious wife.'

She stood abruptly. 'I should go. I have a meeting—'

'Of course you do.' I remained seated, watching her. 'Nylah. That's such a pretty name. Almost as pretty as the name you use in the videos.'

She froze at the doorway, her back to me.

'I'll be in touch,' I said quietly.

She left without looking back.

I waited until her footsteps faded down the hall. Then I stood, picked up the bouquet of white lilies, and walked to the trash can in the corner. I dropped them in, watching the expensive blooms settle among the discarded coffee cups and medical wrappers.

Behind me, Ethan's monitors continued their steady beeping. Still unconscious. Still playing the role of devoted husband in his sleep.

I pulled out my phone and scrolled to Diana Cho's number. It was time to make our next move.
