Chapter 2

The motorcade rolled through the Fort Bragg gates at 1900 hours. Four black vehicles. Full security detail. The kind of arrival that made junior officers check their uniforms twice and senior staff sweat through their dress shirts.

I didn't see it. I was in the dumpster. Still breathing. Barely.

But I heard about it later. Every detail. How Dawson got the call from a breathless lieutenant. How he and Loretta scrambled into dress uniforms in under four minutes. How they reached the parade ground just as General James Wallace stepped out of the lead vehicle.

Dawson told me once—back when he still spoke to me like I was a person—that meeting the General was like standing in front of a glacier. All that power, all that authority, compressed into perfect stillness.

He'd been trying to impress the man for three years.

Tonight was his chance.

"General Wallace, sir." Dawson's voice carried across the parade ground. Warm. Confident. Rehearsed. "It's an honor to have you here. On behalf of my family and the entire officer corps, welcome to Fort Bragg."

The General shook his hand. One firm pump. His face gave nothing away.

Dawson launched into his speech. The one he'd practiced in the mirror. "We believe in service above self here, sir. In family values. In the traditions that make this institution strong." He gestured to Loretta, who stepped forward with a smile that could've been on a recruiting poster. "My wife and I try to embody those values every day."

Loretta's hand found Dawson's arm. The perfect touch. She'd timed it.

"We're honored to serve," she said softly.

The General nodded once. "Carry on, Captain."

Then he moved past them. Toward the command building. His aides followed. Dawson watched him go, chest tight with hope.

He had no idea his entire world was about to detonate.

I didn't know any of this was happening. I was still in the dumpster. My ribs screamed with every breath. Blood crusted on my face. The cold had stopped hurting about an hour ago. That was bad. I knew that was bad.

I tried to move. Couldn't.

I thought about the blizzard again. The convoy. The way I'd guided those trucks through a whiteout that should've killed us all. The frostbite that took feeling from two of my fingers. The commendation I'd written and sent to Dawson because he said it would help.

I thought about his face tonight. The way he'd looked at me like I was a stranger.

I thought: He's inside right now. Warm. Celebrating.

And I'm here.

The stars were very bright. I couldn't feel my hands anymore.

Inside the command building, Adelaide Wallace sat in a reception room with pale green walls and coffee no one was drinking. Her husband was conducting the inspection walkthrough. She was supposed to wait.

She'd been a military wife for thirty years. She knew how to wait.

But tonight something felt wrong.

She stood. Walked to the window. Outside, the base was strung with Christmas lights. Festive. Cheerful. It should've been beautiful.

It felt like a lie.

Adelaide pressed her hand to the glass. Her daughter would be thirty-two now. If she'd lived. If she'd been raised by the parents who were supposed to raise her.

Adelaide had spent twenty years following leads. False sightings. Women with the right age, the wrong face. She'd learned to manage hope. To keep it small and contained so it couldn't destroy her when it died.

But tonight the hope wasn't small.

Tonight it was a scream.

She turned from the window. Walked to the door. No one stopped her. She slipped into the hallway, then out a side exit into the cold.

Her breath fogged. She had no coat. Didn't matter.

She walked.

Past the parade ground. Past the commissary. Behind the mess hall where the dumpsters sat in a dark row and the Christmas lights didn't reach.

She didn't know why she was walking. Didn't know what she was looking for.

Then she saw the hand.

It hung over the edge of the dumpster. Pale. Limp. The fingers slightly curled.

Adelaide ran.

She grabbed the dumpster lid and wrenched it open. The smell hit her—rot and garbage and something metallic. Blood.

A woman lay inside. Broken. Her face swollen and bruised. Her lips blue. Her breathing so shallow it was almost gone.

Adelaide reached in. Grabbed the woman's wrist to check for a pulse.

Her fingers touched skin.

Then the birthmark.

Creescent-shaped. Left wrist. Exactly where the hospital records said it would be. Exactly the shape described in every investigator's report for twenty years.

Adelaide's scream tore open the night.

"HELP! SOMEBODY HELP ME!"

She didn't let go of the wrist. She held on. Her other hand cupped the woman's face.

"I've got you," she whispered. Her voice broke. "I've got you. I'm here."

Footsteps pounded toward her. Voices shouted. A radio crackled.

Then the General was there. He didn't run. But somehow he arrived faster than running.

He looked into the dumpster.

His face turned to stone.

"Get me a medic," he said. His voice was very quiet. Very calm. "Now."

An aide sprinted away.

The General removed his coat. Reached into the dumpster. Lifted the woman out with his own hands and laid her on the pavement. He wrapped his coat around her.

Adelaide knelt beside her. Still holding her wrist. Still touching the birthmark.

"James," she whispered. "It's her."

The General looked at his wife. Then at the woman. Then at the birthmark.

Something shifted behind his eyes.

"Who did this," he said.

It wasn't a question.

An MP appeared. "Sir, we're trying to determine—"

"Find out," the General said. "Find out right now."

The medics arrived. They loaded the woman onto a stretcher. Adelaide climbed into the ambulance without asking permission.

The General watched the ambulance pull away. Then he turned to his aide.

"Get me JAG," he said. "And find Captain Dawson Cox. I want him in my office in ten minutes."

"Sir, it's Christmas Eve—"

The General's gaze could've cut steel.

"Now."

Inside the officers' housing complex, Dawson poured champagne. Loretta laughed at someone's joke. Their son played with a new toy under the tree.

Dawson's phone buzzed.

He glanced at the screen. Frowned.

Then he saw who the message was from.

His hand started shaking.
