My Husband Covered Up My Mother's Death Novel Cover

My Husband Covered Up My Mother's Death

Three nights ago, I left a strange designer wool jacket in our bedroom and wore an unfamiliar woody cologne to dinner, sitting right across from my billionaire husband, Nathaniel. As he methodically cut his steak, he ignored the obvious signs of another man. Nathaniel walked past the jacket twice in cold silence, leaving me to wonder what dark secrets lie beneath his calculated composure in this tense mystery romance.

Chapter 2

I woke up Saturday morning and stared at the ceiling for exactly eleven minutes. The same amount of time I'd stood in that hallway listening to Nathaniel confess to destroying my entire life.

Then I got up.

I showered. I dressed in the navy cashmere sweater Nathaniel liked because it photographed well at events. I put on the diamond studs his mother gave me for our second anniversary. I went downstairs and started the coffee.

Nathaniel came down at seven-thirty, same as always. He wore his running clothes—gray shorts, white shirt, expensive sneakers that cost more than most people's rent. He poured himself water from the filtered pitcher and stretched his calves against the counter.

"I'll be back by nine," he said. "We have the Whitmore brunch at eleven."

"I remember," I said quietly.

He left without kissing me goodbye. He hadn't done that in over a year.

I waited until I heard his car pull out of the garage. Then I walked four blocks to a drugstore I'd never been to before and bought a prepaid phone with cash. The clerk didn't look at me twice.

I made the first call from a coffee shop on Lexington.

"Patricia Ng, family law."

The voice was crisp. Professional. Exactly what I needed.

"My name is Arabella Scott," I said. "I need a divorce attorney. Discreet. Fast. And I need everything filed in Miami, not New York."

There was a pause. Then: "How fast?"

"Three weeks."

"That's aggressive."

"I know."

Another pause. "Are there assets to protect?"

"Yes."

"Children?"

"No. But I have a dependent sister. She comes with me."

"Understood." I heard typing. "I'll need documentation. Financial records, property deeds, anything in your name or jointly held. Can you get that to me within forty-eight hours?"

"Yes."

"Good. I'll draft the initial paperwork. We'll talk Monday."

I hung up.

The second call was to a private financial transfer service that specialized in high-net-worth individuals who needed to move money quietly. I'd found them three months ago when I first started wondering what leaving would actually require. Back then it was just a thought. A fantasy I didn't really believe in.

Now it was a plan.

"I need to move two point three million dollars from multiple accounts into a single protected trust in Miami," I said. "Without triggering any alerts or notifications to joint account holders."

The man on the other end didn't even hesitate. "Timeline?"

"Two weeks."

"We can do that. I'll send you an encrypted link for the documentation. You'll need account numbers, routing information, and a notarized identity verification."

"I'll have it by Monday."

The third call was the hardest.

"Coral Gables Specialist Care Facility, how may I direct your call?"

I took a breath. "I'd like to inquire about long-term residence for my sister. She has cognitive disabilities from a traumatic brain injury. She needs full-time support but also space to continue her art."

"Of course. Let me connect you to our intake coordinator."

I spent twenty minutes on that call. I answered questions about Ensley's needs, her routines, her triggers. I described her artwork—the way she saw color and emotion in ways the rest of us couldn't, the way her paintings sold at local galleries for thousands of dollars even though she could barely read. I asked about safety protocols and visitor policies and whether they had space available within three weeks.

They did.

By the time I walked home, it was nine-fifteen. Nathaniel's car was already back in the garage. I slipped the prepaid phone into the bottom of my purse, beneath the silk lining I'd carefully opened and re-stitched months ago.

I found him in the bedroom, showered and half-dressed.

"You're cutting it close," he said without looking at me. "We need to leave in forty minutes."

"I know," I said quietly. "Do you want eggs?"

He glanced at me then. Brief. Dismissive. "No. Just coffee."

I went downstairs and poured his coffee exactly the way he liked it. Two sugars. A splash of cream. I set it on the breakfast bar and watched the steam rise.

My hands didn't shake.

That night, after the Whitmore brunch where Aitana appeared again—this time in a red dress that made every man in the room turn—and after Nathaniel spent two hours at her side while I made small talk with donors I didn't care about, I went to Ensley's room.

She was painting. Acrylics on canvas, bold strokes of orange and blue that somehow felt like joy and sadness at the same time.

"Bella!" She looked up and smiled. "Look. It's the ocean. But happy."

I sat beside her and watched her work. "It's beautiful, Ens."

"We should go to the ocean," she said. "Someday."

I pressed my fingertips together in my lap. "Yeah," I said softly. "Someday soon."

She didn't know I'd already booked our flights to Miami. She didn't know that in three weeks, we'd be gone.

She didn't need to know yet.

I just needed her to trust me one more time.
