Chapter 3

I dropped my keys onto the entryway table. The metallic clatter echoed through the quiet house. My throat still felt raw, the lingering aftermath of the steroids and the swelling.

Before I could even take off my coat, the doorbell chimed.

I pulled the front door open. Lila stood on the porch, holding a glossy pink pastry box. She wore a perfectly pressed sundress, looking entirely too cheerful for someone who had nearly watched her sister die twenty-four hours ago.

"Can I come in?" Lila asked, already stepping over the threshold before I could answer.

"No," I said, blocking her path with my arm.

She pushed past me anyway, her shoulder bumping hard against my chest. "Ethan told me you were discharged. I brought you some macarons."

"Get out of my house, Lila."

"Are you still holding a grudge?" She dropped the pink box onto the kitchen island. "It was an accident, Syl. You're making Ethan absolutely miserable with this silent treatment."

"I went into anaphylactic shock."

"And you survived." Lila pouted, her lower lip trembling on command. "You always exaggerate. I came here to apologize, but you just want to play the victim."

"You smiled while I choked."

"I was in shock!" she gasped, pressing a hand to her chest. "If my presence triggers you this much, I can just stay away from Ethan. I’d hate to be the reason your marriage falls apart."

The front door swung open. Ethan strode into the foyer, his briefcase in one hand.

Lila immediately let out a soft, broken sob. She buried her face in her hands.

Ethan dropped his bag. He crossed the room in three long strides, positioning himself between us. He wrapped a protective arm around Lila’s waist.

"What are you doing to her now, Sylvia?" he demanded.

"I told her to leave."

"She came here to make peace!" Ethan shouted, his face reddening. "Why do you always have to punish her for a simple mistake? She’s been crying all morning."

Lila peeked out from behind his shoulder. She wiped a nonexistent tear from her cheek.

As she lifted her arm, the overhead kitchen light caught the silver metal around her wrist. A thick chain adorned with a tiny pearl and a golden oyster shell charm.

My stomach dropped.

The Pearl’s VIP dining bracelet. They only gave those custom pieces to patrons who spent over ten thousand dollars a year.

"I just wanted to fix things," Lila sniffled, leaning heavily against Ethan’s chest. "I even called The Pearl this morning. I asked the chef to prepare their saffron scallop risotto for you. As a peace offering."

I stared at her wrist, then up to her eyes. "Saffron scallop risotto."

"Yes," she nodded eagerly. "It's amazing. Ethan said you love rice dishes."

"That dish isn't on the menu."

Lila's hand froze in mid-air.

"It's a secret menu item," I continued, taking a step toward her. "They only offer it to regulars who request it directly from the executive chef. How did you know about it, Lila?"

Her eyes darted to Ethan. Panic flashed across her flawless face. "I... I read about it online."

"You read about an unlisted, off-menu item online?" I asked, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "How many times have you two been to that restaurant?"

"Stop it!" Ethan roared. He slammed his palm flat against the granite countertop. "I am sick of your paranoid delusions! She tries to do something nice, and you turn it into an interrogation."

"She is wearing a VIP bracelet, Ethan."

"I bought it for her at a gift shop!" he lied, not even bothering to make it sound convincing. "We are done talking about this."

He grabbed Lila’s elbow, steering her toward the hallway. "Come on. I’ll drive you back to your apartment."

"You just got home," I pointed out.

"I can't stand being in the same room as you right now," he spat.

They walked out. The heavy oak door clicked shut behind them.

The house fell dead silent.

I didn't cry. The burning betrayal in my chest smothered any urge to weep. I walked straight into the master bathroom and opened the bottom drawer of the vanity.

I pushed aside the bandages, the cold medicine, the extra toothpaste. I reached for the very back corner where I always kept my emergency medical supplies.

Empty.

My backup box of EpiPens was gone.

I marched into the bedroom and grabbed my purse from the armchair. I dumped the entire contents onto the mattress. Wallet, keys, lipstick.

No medication.

I hadn't forgotten the pen in my purse. Someone had actively removed every single dose of epinephrine from my possession before we left for dinner.

A cold, hard clarity settled over my mind. This wasn't an accident. It was a test run.

I walked into the home office and booted up the desktop computer. I pulled up the browser and logged into the joint checking account Ethan and I shared. I rarely checked it. He managed our finances, paying the mortgage and the utility bills.

I clicked on the transaction history.

*Transfer: $500. Memo: Groceries.*

*Transfer: $1,200. Memo: Car repair.*

All sent to a routing number I didn't recognize.

I filtered the search by the last six months. A long column of outgoing payments populated the screen. Every single one went to the exact same external account.

I clicked on the recipient details.

*Account Holder: Lila Mercer.*

My teeth ground together. I scrolled down the endless list of transactions.

*Transfer: $800. Memo: Spa day.*

*Transfer: $2,500. Memo: For the shoes.*

*Transfer: $1,500. Memo: Just because.*

He was funding her entire life. While I budgeted our grocery bills and clipped coupons, my husband was pouring thousands of dollars into my sister's bank account.

I scrolled to the top of the page, searching for the largest transaction. I found it, dated exactly two weeks ago.

*Amount: $45,000.*

*Memo: New home.*

Forty-five thousand dollars. A down payment.

I leaned back in the leather office chair. The screen illuminated the dark room, casting a harsh blue glow across the desk. Ethan hadn't just bought her dinner. He was setting up a completely separate life with her.

I picked up my cell phone. I opened a search engine and typed in 'private investigators near me'.

I dialed the first number with five-star reviews.

The line rang twice.

"Miller Investigations," a gruff voice answered.

"I need to hire you," I said, my tone perfectly steady. "I need you to follow my husband."

"Give me a name and an address," the man replied, the sound of a keyboard clacking in the background. "What exactly are we looking for, ma'am?"

"Everything," I instructed. "I want photos, bank records, and physical proof of his affair."

"Understood. I'll text you a secure link for the retainer fee."

I hung up the phone. I stared at the glowing monitor, tracing the numbers on the screen with my eyes.

A notification popped up in the corner of my desktop.

*New Email: Ethan Mercer.*

I clicked the envelope icon. It wasn't an email to me. It was a forwarded confirmation receipt that he had accidentally sent to our shared household email address.

*Reservation Confirmed: Two Passengers. First Class. Flight to Paris.*

The departure date was set for next Friday.
