Chapter 2

The scream came at two in the afternoon.

I was in the library, reading a contract Santos had sent over. His handwriting in the margins — sharp, precise — felt like a language I was just beginning to remember. The scream cut through the apartment like breaking glass.

I dropped the folder and ran.

Kimora lay at the bottom of the staircase, one hand clutched over her belly, the other reaching toward nothing. Her face was twisted in pain. Or performance. I couldn't tell anymore.

'She pushed me,' Kimora gasped. Her voice carried down the hall. 'She pushed me.'

Cade came out of his study at a dead run. He dropped to his knees beside her. He didn't look at me.

'Call an ambulance,' he said to Marta. Then he turned.

I had never seen him look at me that way. Like I was something he'd found under a rock.

'What the hell did you do?'

I stood at the top of the stairs. I looked down at them. I felt the eyes of the staff on my back — Marta in the doorway, the housekeeper frozen in the hall, the cook visible through the kitchen arch. An audience.

'I didn't touch her,' I said.

Kimora whimpered. She pressed her hand harder against her stomach. 'She was right behind me. She—'

'I wasn't behind her.' My voice came out flat. 'I was in the library.'

'You're lying.' Cade stood. He stepped toward me and I saw something in his face I had never seen before. Not anger. Hatred. 'You've been watching her for weeks. You can't stand that she's giving me what you couldn't. So you—'

'I didn't touch her.'

'She's carrying my child!'

I reached into my pocket. I pulled out my phone. I opened the security app I'd installed three days ago — the one that linked to the camera Cade didn't know I'd placed in the upstairs hallway. I turned the screen toward him.

'Watch,' I said.

He stared at me. Then he took the phone.

The footage was clear. Timestamp in the corner. Kimora walking down the hall alone. She stopped at the top of the stairs. She looked left. She looked right. She checked her watch.

Then she positioned herself at the edge of the top step, gripped the railing with one hand, and threw herself backward.

She tucked her chin. She rolled. She knew how to fall.

Cade watched it to the end. His face didn't change. When it finished, he handed the phone back to me.

'She's carrying my baby,' he said quietly. 'Can't you just be the bigger person?'

He turned and walked back to Kimora. He helped her to her feet. He murmured something I couldn't hear. She leaned into him.

I looked at Marta. Marta looked at the floor.

I walked back to the library. I closed the door. I sat down at the desk and I opened the journal and I wrote: *Day eleven. She threw herself down the stairs. He watched the footage. He chose her anyway.*

I did not cry.

I had stopped crying.

---

The yacht was lit like a floating jewel box.

I stood on the deck in a gown I'd bought that morning — black silk, high neck, no jewelry except the diamond studs my grandmother had left me. The ones Kimora hadn't found yet. Around me, Manhattan's elite drifted between the bar and the ballroom, their laughter rising over the sound of the Hudson lapping against the hull.

Cade's mother took the microphone at nine.

'Good evening,' Margaret Russell said. Her voice carried across the ballroom. 'Thank you all for joining us for this year's Russell Foundation Gala. As many of you know, this foundation is dedicated to securing the future — not just of our city, but of the families who build it.'

I stood near the back. I held my champagne glass and I did not drink.

'Tonight,' Margaret continued, 'I'm thrilled to introduce a very special guest. A woman who represents that future in the most beautiful way possible.'

Kimora stepped onto the stage.

She wore a gown that clung to every curve. Around her neck, a diamond necklace I recognized — it had belonged to Cade's grandmother. Margaret had refused to let me wear it at our wedding.

The room applauded.

'This,' Margaret said, resting a hand on Kimora's shoulder, 'is the woman carrying the next generation of the Russell legacy. Please join me in celebrating her.'

The applause grew louder. I saw heads turn toward me. I saw the calculation in their eyes. I saw pity. I saw satisfaction.

Cade stood near the stage. He did not look at me.

I set my glass on a passing tray. I turned toward the exit.

That was when I heard it.

The sound came from above — a deep, rhythmic thrum that grew louder with every second. Helicopter rotors. The crowd looked up. Through the glass ceiling of the ballroom, lights cut across the night sky.

A sleek black helicopter descended onto the yacht's helipad.

The ballroom went silent.

The helicopter door opened. A man stepped out. Tall. Dark suit. He moved with the kind of authority that doesn't need to announce itself.

He walked straight toward me.

I didn't recognize him. I didn't recognize his face or his walk or the way he looked at me like he'd been searching for me his entire life.

But when he pulled me into his arms, something in my chest — some locked door I hadn't known was there — cracked open.

'Evangeline,' he said. His voice broke on my name. 'I've got you.'

I stared up at him. 'Who—'

He turned to face the crowd. He kept one arm around me. His other hand rose, and the room — the entire glittering, whispering room — fell silent.

'This is my sister,' he said. His voice carried like a blade. 'Evangeline Pierce. The rightful heiress of the Pierce family.'

Somewhere in the crowd, someone gasped.

I looked at Cade. His face had gone white.

I reached down. I pulled the wedding ring off my finger. I walked to where Cade stood frozen beside the stage. I dropped the ring into his champagne glass. It landed with a soft clink that seemed to echo across the water.

'I want a divorce,' I said. 'And I want it by morning.'

I turned back to the man who had called me his sister. He offered me his arm. I took it.

As we walked toward the helicopter, he looked back once at Cade Russell.

'You'll wish,' Santos Pierce said quietly, 'you'd never met her.'

The rotors spun up. The yacht fell away beneath us. And I did not look back.
