Chapter 4

The surgery took four hours. I know because Indy told me later, her voice flat and exhausted in the way that meant she'd been terrified. I don't remember most of it. Just fragments: the ceiling tiles sliding past as they wheeled me down a hallway, someone's hand squeezing mine, the chemical taste of anesthesia at the back of my throat.

When I woke, the room was dim. Monitors beeped beside me. IV lines ran into both arms. My body felt distant, like something I was borrowing. I turned my head—slow, everything slow—and saw Indy in the chair beside the bed. Her eyes were red. She wasn't crying anymore, but she had been.

'The baby?' My voice came out as a whisper.

Indy leaned forward, her hand covering mine. 'She's okay. They said it's a miracle, but she's okay.'

She. Our daughter. The one I'd almost lost on a restaurant floor while her father carried another woman out the door.

I closed my eyes. The relief was so sharp it hurt worse than the incision across my abdomen.

'Rhys?' I asked, though I already knew.

Indy's jaw tightened. 'He's three floors down. With her. She's fine. Twisted ankle. Nothing a brace and some attention won't fix.'

I nodded. The movement made my head swim. I stared at the ceiling tiles—white, industrial, impersonal—and felt something inside me go very quiet. Not grief. Not even anger. Just a cold, clear certainty that settled into my bones like concrete.

'I'm leaving,' I said.

Indy didn't ask if I was sure. She didn't tell me to wait, to think it through, to consider my options. She just pulled out her phone, her thumbs moving fast across the screen.

'First class to Paris,' she said. 'Leaves in three days. I'm coming with you.'

'Indy—'

'I'm coming with you,' she repeated. Her voice left no room for argument. 'You're not doing this alone.'

I looked at her. At the fierceness in her eyes, the set of her mouth. She'd survived her own betrayal two years ago. She knew what I was facing. She knew what I'd need.

'Thank you,' I whispered.

She squeezed my hand. 'This baby is yours, Sar. Just yours. He doesn't get to take this too.'

I repeated the words in my head until they became something I could believe.

Outside in the corridor, I learned later, Carter Voss stood for twenty minutes. Rhys's COO. The man who'd watched me manage the invisible scaffolding of Mendez Capital's early years while Rhys took the credit. He didn't come in. He didn't knock. He just stood there, staring at the closed door, before walking away without speaking to anyone.

I was discharged on a Tuesday morning. Indy drove me home—not home, I corrected myself. The penthouse. The place I'd lived but never owned.

The elevator ride up felt longer than it should have. My body ached. The surgical site pulled with every breath. But my mind was clear. I knew exactly what I needed to do.

I packed methodically. Only what was mine. Only what mattered. Clothes. Photographs of my grandmother. The cracked phone with her voicemails. My sketchbooks from college, the ones I'd stopped filling when I started building Rhys's empire instead of my own life. I left the Hermès bag in the closet, still in its box. I left the jewelry he'd given me on the dresser. I left every expensive thing he'd ever used as a substitute for presence.

The nursery stood untouched. I walked past it twice, my hand on the doorframe, but I didn't go in. The crib I'd assembled. The mobile of tiny stars hanging above it. The onesies folded in the drawer, soft and waiting. I left it all exactly as it was. Let him see what he'd destroyed. Let him live with the ghost of what we'd almost had.

In the kitchen, I placed the manila envelope on the marble island. Divorce papers. I'd signed them in the hospital, my signature shaky but legible. I set my wedding ring on top—the platinum band I'd saved three months to buy when we had nothing. It caught the afternoon light, cold and final.

I stood there for a moment, my hand on my stomach. Our daughter moved beneath my palm, a small flutter that felt like a promise.

'Just us now,' I whispered.

I picked up my suitcase. Indy was waiting in the car downstairs. Paris was three days away. A new life was three days away.

I walked to the door. My hand on the handle. I didn't look back at the penthouse, at the view of Elliott Bay, at the ten years I'd spent building someone else's dream.

I just left.

The door closed behind me with a soft click. Final. Absolute.

I didn't cry until I was in the elevator. And even then, it was brief. By the time the doors opened on the ground floor, I'd rebuilt my composure brick by brick.

Indy looked up when I slid into the passenger seat. She didn't ask if I was okay. She just started the engine and pulled into traffic.

'Three days,' she said.

'Three days,' I repeated.

Seattle blurred past the window. I pressed my palm against the glass and felt nothing but the future pulling me forward.

I was already gone.
